Blade loses director 2 months before shooting; Ali unhappy, script lackluster

How are they treating the IP? There isn't any proof of anything here. It's a nothing burger.
Low quality script, novice director, letting the project get to this point in this kinda shape?

Granted, films with this pre-pro history can turn out great, remember that Viggo Mortensen replaced Townsend like the day before shooting in LOTR, but in general this suggests diffuse issues with production. Disney has a lot of recent films with extensive shooting issues (John Carter, Solo, Rogue One) so to see it spilling over to the MCU is disconcerting to say the least. Blade is a bit of a known quantity compared to a lot of their other IP so I can understand folks disappointment.

Isn't this not supposed to come our for like 3 years?

Im sure it'll be fine. This sorta thing happens all the time.

Also since when is Peyton Reed a yes man? Yall loved his stuff on mandalorian

Let's Keep in mind a few things. This was a passion project for mahershala, this wasn't even on fieges radar initially. Ali pitched it to him. This director guy who left has one real project to his name so I doubt its some wide spanning artistic vision. He probably wasn't ready for a big thing like this.

Why not just let Ali direct?

A better example is Die Hard, they were shooting before the writing was even done! Much was improvised to boot! :messenger_winking_tongue:

Certainly, happens all the time. But back then the stakes were generally lower, the budgets much less, and I think studios were more tolerant of risk taking. OR it was the opposite, a single film was the ABSOLUTE LIFE of a studio, and if it went bust the studio went under. Plenty of them as well. Shit, I could probably post 5 studio logos here that would trigger so much nostalgia it would close the thread for a week out of mourning :P

Point being, how many critical flops had "It all went GREAT! The script was perfect, filming went smoothly, the cast was awesome!" stories? At worst those shoots tend to just be kinda routine, sorta like the later Harry Potter films or something.

Well based on the posts in this thread, it seems the script is lackluster and director change is another. The news about Kevin Feige spread too thin as well isn't confidence inducing.

I just want Blade to come back big.

Is anyone even that excited about this one?! We already got a kickass Blade trilogy. The first in particular being really good.

And Wesley Snipes is the perfect Blade In the same way Hugh Jackman is the perfect Wolverine so I'm not interested in another actor taking the mantle.

Where do you people get this shit from? There's no such thing as 'perfect' for the role.

There is no proof of any of that. It's a "report" from 2 no name twitter accounts. The only fact is that the director has stepped down due to scheduling issues. For all we know Blade has been delayed and public just doesn't know about it yet.

Blade 1 was fantastic
Blade 2 was OK
Blade 3 was fucking crap.

No snipes no Blade though. and without sounding racist, black don't crack, so it's not like he would look too old or out of place doing modern day blade.

Worst still is I don't believe they even know what made the first Blade as ace as it was, because they sure as shit couldn't replicate that in 2 or 3.

not hating on the dude, but thats bad casting, there are plenty of actors to choose from... he looks like Blade's retarded brother Butterknife.

hope I'm proven wrong tho.

That bumped news…anyone feeling over it with this carrot on a stick act with the Blade movie should just look forward to the video game instead. It's being made by the primary team behind Dishonored.

Right now, 75% chance it comes out before this movie.

Ali's one of the best actors about and is the only actor other than Snipes that I think of that truly fits the role..

So they have him; and they have one of the coolest properties about, yet their first thought is "let's not have the character do what he's known for"...?!

Killing vampires while wearing leather is like 80% of this thing.

It's crazy how whether it's movie studios or game studios/publishers, they've become woefully incompetent at doing the one thing they're meant to do: ship a decent movie or game. People were often completely winging it 30yrs back, and killing it. Yet now with the full force of these studios, the big studio head and all this money behind them they can't even get enough material to get to the set.

What does that even mean? I have a leather jacket I wear all the time when the weather allows it; did we enter 2025 and leather just disappeared globally?

Apparently the costumes in Sinners came from a Blade period piece that never started filming. MCU needs to get out of their formula ASAP otherwise James Gunn will wash them.

Reading Tariq's bio on wiki and he seems like quite the mismatch for a big budget action flick. Same with Chloe Zhao and Eternals. They seem to want high caliber drama directors and force them into the franchise factory, like their credentials will somehow elevate low tier movies.

We're making a Blade movie, but we don't want it to be just like Blade. So, we're rethinking how to best do this Blade movie.

Hollywood in a nutshell. Everything is right there for you. Stop beating around the fucking bush and just make the movie.

I can only imagine the original script heavily featured P. Diddy and and lots of baby oil, then all the arrests came and they couldn't pivot :P

Blade seems like the most slam dunk IP imaginable. 80 mill budget, all practical effects, no goddamn CG video game finale, funky horrific vamps that get beheaded a lot. Add a guy who can keep his cool (I vote for the Severance/MI8 sub commander guy Tramel Tillman) and a rocking hip-hop and rock soundtrack and all you will hear is the sound of printing money.

Blade shouldn't be a complex film to make. All we need is Blade killing vampires in the most bad-ass way possible. That's it.

"We didn't want to put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires."

What film do they want to make, legally blonde?

Literally everyone: "we want a movie where you cast a cool guy, put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires"
Marvel for some reason for 10 years: "we didn't want to put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires"

Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill.

Crazy thing about their idea to make a period piece about vampires set in the 1920's is that Sinners actually did do that and it was pretty good.

But there's no doubt in my mind that Marvel does not have the creative juice to do something like that well.

Scrap it. Not a franchise worth revisiting unless you are going to give it a lot of love and world building attention.

Okai Disney, I concede Ali being the NEW Blade only, and only, if OG Blade Sir Wesley Snipes is given a sizable chunk of movie to pass him the stakes. None other way. And also if you don't grab a noob halal butcher as a director.

Didn't you learn anything about Deadpool&Wolverine? People FUCKING LOVE Wesley Snipes and his Blade, because yes, until he himself passes the stakes to another Daywalker, he is and always will be 'He Who Has Seen The Sun' 🖕🏻😎 🩸

As a kid I saw a marvel cartoon where Blade and Spider-Man were teaming up to take down Vampires. Spider-Man had garlic in his web mix.

Don't do that please.

Mahershalla Ali is already too old. he shouldn't even be blade at this point, let alone be cast as the young up-and-comer blade passes the torch to.

They think they're smarter than the audience.

Then when they bugger it up they can't comprehend that it's their fault, so it's the market, the brand, the audience.

Pass the stakes. Nicely done my friend, nicely done.

Hopefully there will be a girlboss in the movie that will be the real bad ass vampire killer!

Only if they call her "Lady Blade" or "Bladette"!

And she NEVER uses a knife, sword, or any thing like that and eventually someone asks her "Why are you called Lady Blade?" and she says "I'm just a girl version of a much cooler character!" :P

Fuck, this thread is 3 years old. Hilarious.

A blade movie with Ali should be a slam dunk. His brooding presence helped make that season of true detective (and dorff was awesome too). This shouldn't be that hard.

It would be cool if she could psychically disembowel them!? Remember those old videos of people performing surgery with only their hands no scapels or anything?
