Blade Runner 2049 Review Thread

You’re kidding me, great reviews!

I lost my father six months ago, Blade Runner was his favourite movie and we always watched it together. I’m glad this is good, can’t wait to see it, just wish he could too.

I'm curious how many years from now will it take for gaf to turn on Ville as well lol

I think that both Nolan and Villeneuve make really good movies and the real winners are us, the audience. Thank you

gotta wait for this movie to cement it but if it is great, he will join GOATlan by turning super sayian and turning into VilleGOAT as the two best (new) directors of this century.

Someone's cutting onions around me.

Enjoy the movie.

To be fair, if film was never again able to match old classics or produce new classics, then the state of the medium would be quite sad.

I agree with that. I'm glad this seems to be an amazing film. When I heard Denis and Deakins teamed up for it, I had faith it would at least be visually arresting but I'm glad they managed to pull off everything else.

Hoped it would be good but these reviews are far better than I expected, so that's great to hear. I will definitely checking this out at the cinema.

What did everyone expect??

Denis himself said in an interview.

"When I heard of BR sequel, I called myself the studio and ensure I was going to direct it. Because anyone else will f#ck it up"
I was in peace with that quote.

I'll go drop money at the cinema despite my skepticism just for that quote. Oh yeah, and the insanely good reviews.

Trying to keep the hype in check since this all sounds almost too good to be true but man, it'd be amazing if it turns out to be that nice.

LOL At these Nolan super fans. It harkens back to the IMDB days when Nolan fans review bombed the Godfather so that Dark Knight would claim the #1 spot on the all-time list. I like Nolan quite a lot but let's not be ridiculous.

Only negative review on RT so far is from someone that didn't like the original.

8.9/10 average is really damn good.

it will come down, I expect 92% RT when the dust settles
It's a long movie that (seemingly) takes itself very seriously and before you quote this post with 2001 a space odyssey, that combination isn't going to work for everyone

Oscars might hate Villeneuve even more than they hate Nolan
I think Denis is the kind of film maker who doesn't give a shit. He just makes the movies he wants to make, he doesn't go to studios and pitch a movie from a business perspective unlike Nolan does. I get the feeling Nolan wants to please his investors, and simultaneously wants to get artistic praise. After a few successful projects Nolan felt dat thirst for artistic recognition, so he made Dunkirk, ticking all the boxes,in his mind. The crazy thing is that 2049 will potentially have much larger artistic ramifications.

It has less to do with quality and more to do with the individual’s opinion of the original. Blade Runner is a classic, but it’s not universally loved like a Jaws or Alien

I also think that, thinking film can never match or top the classics of the past is a pretty depressing view of the medium.

It's more about some of these professionals calling it a masterpiece and an instant classic after a single viewing (and then they award it 3/4...mmk). Those are the ones I'm absolutely going to cast doubt on. Especially when one of this reviews describes something like the soundtrack as oppressive and percussive and in the very same sentence they say it's faithful to Vangelis. What are you even taking about. How am I supposed to take that guy seriously for instance?

Clearly BR2049 turned out good, great even! Denis for sure didn't shit the bed, and that's enough of a win for me. But I'm gonna take a pass for the time being on the more ridiculous superlatives.

* Hampton Fancher (OG scriptwriter of Blader Runner) writing
* Denis Villeneuve directing
* Hans Zimmer scoring
* Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto starring.

Currently 97% on RT.

Final Cut blu-ray, I think most would agree.

I'm yet to be as blown over by a Villeneuve movie as many others, and I doubt this will break the streak, but I'm glad that it's likely a lot better than the trailers made me fear.

I agree with this. I hope Blade Runner 2049 and The Disaster Artist take all the Oscars. Justice for Deakins and Wiseau!

it will come down, I expect 92% RT when the dust settles

That just shows RT's weakness doesn't it? Favouring conformity.
