Blades of Fire demo launches May 15 | ‘World’ trailer

I think the game has tons of potential and the combat is a blast. I have played a few hours the demo and couldn't stop.

I will probably buy it at launch

How is the core gameplay mechanic skippable? You can find weapons or what? You cant repair your stuff infinitely
Just the minigame. I believe it said you can get your high score on the crafting part and hit a skip button to replicate it or something to that effect.

Yeah lol. This plays much better than it looks on videos for sure and the graphics looks great aswell!
Legit, going into that forger's realm for the first time i was taken aback by all the cool particle effects.

And when the old man got killed in the beginning the blood spatter all over him was quite detailed.

I honestly think it looks within spitting distance with Ragnarok. Maybe not in character models but in environment and lighting its competitive.

Yeah, I bought this after playing the demo on ps5 pro for 30min. I have a feeling this game can use the support. Perfect for when i finish Doom. Combat feels very impactful and i like the gore effects. I didn't understand how to forge all though. Could have a better tutorial for it.

The trailer is lame and corny as fuck but somehow I still wanna try every game that actually has a demo in this day and age. Will give it a shot later tonight just for that.

Finally played more than the first 10 min. Its honestly pretty cool. I already like both the characters already. Multiple weapons and stance changes.. This is one of the better AA action games we've gotten in a while from the first 30 min. I like how different parts of the enemy bodies are red or green depending on their armor and your equipped weapon. Cool to see the wear and tear on your weapon on certain points based on stabbing or slashing. Pretty original. Dodging is also a bit thoughtful. Looks like you have to dodge up or down for horizontal attacks to duck it and side to side for vertical.

Okay...demo was a wise decision here because it certainly plays a lot better than videos suggest.

It feels like a western Nioh in quite a few ways to me. I don't know if I'm just burnt from other games right now but it feels like it bombards you with information and systems right off the bat and there seems to be quite a bit of micromanagement. Again, might just be me not getting it yet, but the weapons degrading very quickly, the forging, the statues and all this stuff reminded me of how much sub-sub-sub clutter Nioh had on top of what's clearly a Souls-like base.

Much like Nioh, this seems deep and like it'll be a lot of fun once you wrap your head around it. The different stances with the sword, weapon degradation based on which part of the weapon you attack with, a different spin on stamina management, seemingly no or next to no i-frames and so on. I just found it overwhelming and slightly annoying because I've had a shitty day but can totally see the appeal. Not saying it plays like Nioh but it has a similar take on the Souls formula "in spirit" imo.

That being said, the character designs and models are just...whatever that style is, I do not like it. The character models kind of suck too including the enemies. Music is often cool but then hits these really ominous moments and/or vocal parts that don't seem to go with what's happening at all? Presentation-wise, this game is definitely kind of goofy and unintentionally weird I think. Not some big knock on it but eh.

I'd get this on sale further down the line.

Combat looks a bit shit in this video, ngl.
It's surprisingly cool and you can see my comment about the trailer above lol. If you try the demo, get through all the bullshit cutscenes first and get to the main portion after forging a weapon. It opens up into a village "level" that feels a lot like Nioh when Nioh decides to have a decent level once in a while.

The game has colored outlines around enemies to indicate if your current weapon and stance does optimal, meh or no damage. Like a sword won't do shit to a sokdier with metal body armor which is a pretty cool idea. It gets down to body parts/sides since the combat is directional. So their right arm may be armored but left exposed and Square swings left so you can still cut their arm etc.

I think the aesthetic is typical MercurySteam semi-jank and lame but it definitely plays well and combat feels...juicy. Triangle does an overhead swing and smashing a dude's head with a hammer feels crunchy. It's also snappier/Action game-ier than Souls.

You played this for a bit it seems...can you kill the Troll whwn you first encounter it? I read the Mutilation mechanic tutorial (which is cool) but whenever it turns to stone, my hammer does nothing and I have red outlines on both weapons. Idk if I'm doing something wrong or if I have to come back. Also how do you use Mutilation finishers on regular guys? Just in combat or do you have to put them in some particular status?

You can yes. If i remember correctly, when his hp bar is really low you can do a charged attack and you can cut off his right hand or even his head. His head has a weird effect around it when you can cut it off, not sure about the arm. He can grow it back tho. Its a fun fight :)

So he turns into stone and then the aura is just red and both my weapins bounce off. Do I need to do this before he petrifies somehow?

Also that slight slow-mo effect when hitting a good dodge is really satisfying.

He doesnt turned into stone the second time i fought him when i cut his arms off i think. Im gonna fight him again because i dont really remember tbh :) but you definitely need to mutilate him to beat him

This comes out in 3 days. I need to finish Doom, but im definitely getting this day 1. This game is the perfect example of "it plays much better than it looks"

Reviews are starting to drop

4/5 from Eurogamer

Will probably check it out down the line. July looks like a free month to play catch up before Gears and Mafia in August

Honestly it always looked good. Plays good too. People are just way too quick to judge. All the promo stuff clearly showed what this is. I was confident pre-ordering before the demo.

Love me some mid to high 70s games.

I want to support these guys, first of all they are from Spain, my home country. Second, I feel like they have tried to make something unique and I was super hooked with the demo, I coudnt stop playing

I thought he looked cool honestly. Reminds me a bit of Ra from Stargate.

After a while i was ok with him but the first couple of moments were weird, dude has a very feminine face, haircut and dress so hearing him talking like a dude was funny as fuck.

Btw, do we know if you can find good weapons via exploration? Because i fucking hate the forge minigame and if that is the only way to get new weapons i'm definitely out.

I dont know for sure. I thought I heard you can max stars on a weapon type and repeat that without the minigame

Love me some mid to high 70s games.

Happy for the dudes but, let's not kid ourselves, this will sell like shit.

As for me, well, I kind of liked what I played and the GFX are indeed pretty BUT, that almost generic high fantasy art direction and forge mini game are a no go.

I really can't do games anymore that look "uninteresting" to the eye, the esthetics/art direction have to have some hook otherwise it's bargain bin time for me personally.

So no one playing this? Probably picking this up tomorrow.

Yeah. Didn't see this thread so I posted over in the 'What are you playing' thread. Only played a few hours. I'm leaning toward it being a good game rather than bad. Hopefully, I can get a more concrete impression when I play more later tonight.

Blades of Fire
Played for a couple of hours. It's just...okay, I guess. Maybe okay isn't the correct word; maybe 'solid' would be a better choice. I like the level design, design of the enemies, and the art style. The world itself looks rather nice, too. I've always enjoyed a brighter fantasy sort of world. Combat is quite plain so far. Not sure if that will improve later on, but right now it desperately needs some sort of magic or secondary attack. Just hacking at enemies with varying weapons won't be enough for the alleged fifty or so hours of gameplay, I don't think. I think I'll start to enjoy this more if I get some additional combat mechanics thrown my way, and once I get a little more invested in the story."

Reactions here are all over the place.

Can the forging be skipped entirely? I'm not into crafting in games.

Theres alot more, but i get tired listing the obvious. Well and i turned it off when explained the weakdamage mechanic. Crafting and breakable weapons is one thing, but that...this game is absolutely no action adventure game.

What is the weakdamage mechanic?

Different weapon types have damage advantages on different enemies. You can also change stance for example changing sword damage type to stab or slash. Areas glow green, orange or red to indicate viability. This can vary per enemy or even per limb, and changes when armor or other statuses change.

Art direction really is as generic "western fantasy" as it can get. I never get this. Here's your shot art designer, finally! And 90% of games look like the same template shit. Don't you have some kind of...vision...or ideas that got you i to that line of work lol!?

Im digging the impressions. Keep em coming plz. It sounds cool to me.

Chopping off arms and heads. Face buttons controlling what you swing. Kinda sounds an alt take on The Surge.
It's way closer to the cool Souls likes than Souls. The Surge and Nioh. Doesn't play like either imo but it tries way more to do its own thing, like those two, than straight Souls-likes.

I still think the first The Surge is highly underrated and awesome.

Yeah me too. I was never really any good at it but I love the concept, level design, lore etc
