Blim Blim's x360 gui video....cool stuff!

i like the streaming from an ipod and PSP, and that is supported in-game.

Ok, then people are bitching about the lack of a HD for custom soundtracks for no reason. Just hook up your iPod and you're set.

Yeah, its been known for awhile that you don't need the HDD for custom soundtracks.

There are still things its needed for though, such as Demos, HD Trailers and probably some XBL Arcade games

All I knw is that stuff loked badass! I already have media center pc so streaming to x360 will be great. Now if they get the codecs right, things will be perfect.

looks very similar to something else...oh yeah xbmc for xbox :) will the pc streaming work from just normal windows xp or do you have to have windows media centre edition?

I'm curious where you think XBMC got their inspiration (and name and interface) from :)

Music and Photos will work with normal XP, videos requires MCE

That's what i want to know, if i can just kinda use my pictures, videos, musci stuff without having the Media Center version of Windows.

Look at the Blim's video again. There are 4 choices:
Music
Photos
Video
Media Center

there's been some mixed messages on whether or not video streaming is done from normal XP, but it looks like it's supported. For streaming TV you'll need Media Center. Which isn't that bad since Media Center is going to be included in Vista anyway.

Confirmed?! I mean that would be so great! Would it be possible to stream custom soundtracks into 360 games from your PC?

That looked fucking slick. Lots of thought has gone into the GUI, and it shows.

Now its time for me to gain some knowledge about media centre PC and how to set it up.

When he selects Video it says play videos from the xbox 360 harddrive. No mention of streaming like the other options have.

Confirmed? About MC in Vista? I don't know if it's been officially confirmed, but I know a lot of people that work at MS and that's what I've heard. Of course with the way Vista is going who knows what's going to be in it when it finally comes out.

You can stream music/pictures from the network, attached storage devices, or the builtin HD. And any streamed audio can be used as custom soundtracks (if the game supports it, but since it's built into the system it has to be something the devs code to PREVENT instead of SUPPORT). So yes, you can stream custom soundtracks from PC overtop 360 games.

Well, if they're supporting streaming from different sources for audio and photos, why do you think video would be any different?

Well, because that is what they've said and that is what the video indicates.

core pack not looking so bad...amirite?

If you can use networked PC as a save device then it's not bad at all. And I see no reason why they wouldn't allow a networked PC to be used as a storage device (well other than hackers etc). From a technical perspective I believe a network PC just acts as any other storage device like a USB storage or builtin HD. It's all abstracted by the OS.

There has been conflicting reports, I believe Major Nelson is the only one who has said flat out that video is not supported, whereas other people have flat out said it is. And in the video the only time he accesses video is using the Extender interface where he's streaming it from the PC.

I think you can have localized video say if something is on your PSP or something. But to stream live television, you got to have media center.

I've been making the same argument before today, but the different descriptions and the fact that he didn't talk about the video option leads me to believe MN is right.

Here are the other options for comparison. They clearly state streaming from a computer.

Wouldn't this fact open up so many avenues for game devs out there? Very interesting...

Hmmm... looking at the video and the description that comes up when he passes over "video" it's definitely different than music or pictures. If you can't stream video from the network that'd be really really lame.

MS cant licence all the necessary codecs, the only solution is to release a program to reencode videos in MPEG2 on the fly - a french ISP has done it using the core of VLC, and trust me the quality is bad.

Still very lame. They should support the standard codecs that come with Windows (wmv9, etc) and then release an easy to use utility that'll perform the conversion offline, just like PSP has.

I was at a 360 conference where they specifically showed a 360 streaming video from a Media Center PC. The videos were high-def 360 game trailers. Worked great, looked great.

Were they using the media center extender though? That is what they did in this demo

They do. You can make your own WMV. If anything it is better then PSP because it doesn't use some strange codec. Just grab WMEncoder and convert any video.

HQ version online
And so far it looks like the video choice in the multimedia tab will only be for videos you'll download (for free or not) from the Live Marketplace.

stupid if you can't stream. Whats that XP connect thing for - just a UPnP type server app for music / photos?

I emailed Major Nelson about this.

Video streaming from your PC requires Media Center XP.

Standard XP will stream pictures and music.

OH MY GOD THE XBOX IS VIEWING IMAGES OFF THE PSP HOW CAN THIS BE IT'S LIKE AMAZING YOU'D THINK THE PSP WAS SOME KIND OF GENERIC USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE OR SOMETHING WHATS GOING ON?

That little movie may have pushed me over the edge. I'm back on board MS, the only thing holding me back now is how badass Madden is going to look.

Another ass backwards choice from MS by only allowing to stream videos using the Media Center.

You're on a roll today MS!

I'm baffled at the sheer stupidity of this choice. Who the hell has a Media Center PC? I've never even seen one. Again, I'm just baffled. It's almost as if they are looking for ways to screw customers. I'm pretty close to just upgrade my PC with a nice card, buy Oblivion for PC and skip the Xbox 360 launch.

Well you really didn't expect MS to allow people to stream videos from OSX or Linux, did you?

OMG! Does the psp connect to any other consoles at the moment?

LOL...that "nice card" will cost more than the core x360 at least.

I like it when the fat white guy says "I'm just chillin'" and later proceeds to play some cover version of Kris Kross's "Jump"

WTF TOTAL

The visualizer looks pretty awesome...I like that you can control it, and that more than one person can control it. Take out the crappy "Media Center Edition" required stuff and I'm well sold on the non-gaming functions of the system.

You can buy some pretty decent stuff for less than $200, nowadays....and really decent stuff if $299 is the price ceiling.

What I'm hoping for is the ability to create some of your own content. For instance, in Forza you can create your own cars with the built-in paint editor; but I think it would be cool if one could create their own design on the PC and then xfer it to the 360.

Probably wishful thinking though. :)

I see this hapenning in the future, but not at (or relatively close to) launch.
