I also use the Beast Cutter in my new game. I like it a lot but jeez, it costs a lot of stamina.
Yeah lvl 30 is a bit low for the DLC (and I'm here still trying to beat Ludwig at lvl 17 lol), I think the recommended level is 65?

Ahh a fellow Beast Cutter user! Splendid :D I always have a soft spot for underused weapons, to be frank, and like I said the double tap R2 overhead slam of Beast Cutter is just sex, hahaha. It's funny to see that the Snake Guys of the Forbidden Woods get pummeled like pancake with it: I can practically just toy with them right now with Beast Cutter, hahah.

The Insight sucking guys though.... -_________-

Btw, you have a lot of patience making your way to Ludwig at 17 o_O

Cheers, yeah I knew he used fire so prep'd with Bone Ash and Fire damage rune %5. It was messy (had 1 vial left), but I tried to stay to the side or behind him. One handing the Moonlight Sword and R2 stab attack worked well for me.

I was around 140 on NG+ so may have been a bit over-leveled.

Nice!

Hah I tried last night at about 175 on NG+...my friend told me about Mergo's Loft farming spot and I tried it out for about an hour or so...but although I beat M
aria
first time (SUCH A GOOD FIGHT), L
aurence
remains the DLC boss who is still kicking my ass.

Yes! I love the R2 slam too, it's so satisfying and has a very long reach. My only issue is that it takes time for the character to recover after the attack. By that, I mean you can't dodge immediately and you become vulnerable for a moment.
I also like how fast the weapon is in its "sword" form.

And about Ludwig, yesterday, I tried to fight him with Valtr and lost more than 30 times. I wanted to fight him just once for fun, but I kept trying and couldn't stop, I managed to reach his second phase but he kept killing me and Valtr lol. I don't have Insight anymore, but I'll try to fight him on solo to see if there is a difference regarding his HPs and damage.
I don't want to lvl up yet because I want to do some coop with my brother when he gets the game.

And I also want that Moonlight Sword

I got him lvl 100 on NG. I was overleveled for the DLC, but he was still hard as fuck (OoK too). And like you, at the end of the fight, I had 1 vial left (and 1 bullet). The second phase was so messy, I thought I was so dead !

The optional boss is pretty awful, and seriously sours an experience that had improved quite a bit, particularly with the tower.

Now that it's done, I'd honestly have to say I'm pretty disappointed in the mechanical aspects of the boss designs in general. There's only one I actually liked, though I'll admit the multi-boss fight (a category I usually hate out of hand) was one of the less obnoxious ones they've had.

On the whole, the quality of the DLC is about on par with the Yara'ghul -> Nightmare Frontier arc of the game, which was my least favorite by far. Probably worth it just for the tower and weapons, though.

what's up with the guy banging his head against the wall? I may have killed him...

Also, any hints for getting the key to the door on the ground floor of the research hall?

Give brain fluid to the weird lady that asks you for it.
If you don't know where to find it,
attack the weird balls that say weird stuff ("Lady Maria I'm a robin!" and "Plip plop the sea blah blah"), they drop the fluid, and don't even die, they just regenerate.

If you can't be bothered getting the brain fluid, just kill her. You'll get it, you'll miss out on a rune, but you'll get the key.

Entirety of Research Hall into JRPG Meteor Storm boss battle into Hamlet is the most fun I've had since Demon's :(

I hope Bloodborne receives the recognition it deserves from gaming publications. I kinda feel like it will get shoved into nomination lists but will lose out to bigger games.

I really doubt that Bloodborne will win any 'major' goty award considering it is going up against FO4, MGSV and W3. Bloodborne not getting best art direction award on VGAs was really disappointing though.

This. But it's easy the GOTY. Easy.

Its recognition will come over time. It'll definitely be regarded as one of this generation's best games.

Thank you so much. I never realized how that item worked, I thought it was a pvp thing, wow that's awesome. Now I can move onto NG+

I know right? I didn't know that this item had this effect. When I read about it, I felt so dumb. I've been playing the game for months and I didn't know that at all xD

Yesterday I noticed while running a Loran Chalice that the Moonlight Sword scares Old Yarnham beasts, like the torch. Weird but cool effect.

Are you 2 handing the sword with your torch on your back? There's a bug which causes them to be scared even when your torch isn't lit.

The Research Hall is what I mean when I say "the tower", and yeah, it's pretty fantastic.

There are obvious cues from Tower of Latria and the Duke's Archives, but it uses some of the best elements of both without falling into the pitfalls of either, and it really does hit the Bloodborne tone superbly well with the sort of "Arkham Horror" vibe going on.

The last boss of the area is also my favorite by far, if only because the bosses that should have been better by all rights (due to having more ambitious and interesting design) are all marred by some huge black mark or another.

I really like the Hamlet's Innsmouth aesthetic, I'm just having trouble convincing myself it's a very good area. The second half of it (with the caverns and their sort of Valley of Defilement feel) improves to a decent level, but the village part really missed the mark for me in terms of mechanical design, pacing, and use of space. Had way too many shades of the Shrine of Amana and the Gutter for my liking.

As far as the Meteor Storm goes, it did grate on my nerves a lot less than most of the dogpile boss fights of the series (Four Kings, Ruin Sentinels, Shadows of Yharnam, etc.). I'm just not the right person to judge the quality of that fight, as I recognize that I have an extreme bias against those types of boss encounters right from the outset.

I'd say most of the DLC areas are not that well designed. The main game has many areas where on first look it's hard to figure out where the paths start and end and when you find shortcuts they come as pleasant surprises. The DLC levels are far more obvious and visually few of them are really stunning. Especially the fishing hamlet looks kinda crap for the most parts. It would be an extremely easy area if it wasn't for the shark giants. Had to cheese them to get the Rakuyo.

Oh and fuck
OoK
and
Laurence
. I guess I need to upgrade my weapons even more (gotta get that +9 pizza cutter) as on NG+ it feels like I have to do a shitload of hits to get their health down.

ah lol, I'm not sure now but maybe that was it? I'll check later.

I though it was the glow of the sword lol That's why I said it's weird, they're suposedly scared of fire, not moon light.

After posting that pic earlier of my bitter OoK loss, I managed to get him after another 3 attempts.

Then somehow I managed to pull a win against La
urence
on my first attempt, I was stunned! Justice!!!

I just tried L for the first time since all the negativity had put me off earlier. Went on a NG+ STR character and managed to get him to about 5% life in first attempt, then killed on 2nd. I've never been super good at any souls style games so this made me felt so good. Or maybe it was just the pizza cutter.

yeah, it really was nice to see a fully realised version of The Duke's Archives. As I help out other players, the genius of the RH design (except maybe the pressure plates) is becoming more and more obvious.

I think the post-well, pre-bonfire section of the Hamlet works best as a dodging gauntlet rather than a slow, methodical clear-out. There aren't many rewards hidden around, and those that are are fairly pedestrian. Racing through the hut door and finding the bonfire as the -- uh -- giant things crashed against the doorframe behind me was such a cathartic moment. The roof-tops and caverns with the stalking moments were some of my favourites. :)

Welp, it has been more than 2 hours I'm trying to beat Ludwig at lvl 17 on solo.
I think I have to conclude that I don't have enough skill to do it, and have to stop lol.
I need a break.

FINALLY, that utter
CUNT
L
awrence
is DEAD!

Bastard really didn't drop many blood echoes. :(

I would probably have had an easier time with phase 2 if I put the bloodgems on the Simon's Bowblade I was using rather than the Reiterpallash I was not...

That is pretty useless since you most likely won't get visceral out of it. It is great when doing coop though as you can do backstabs easily and other one can go for the visceral.

Yeah, but don't staggered enemies take like double/bonus damage? you can just shoot a fast arrow with R1 and the enemy will probably die because of bonus damage after R2 charged attack.

Beast Cutter is AMAZINGLY fun. First weapon that has legitimately replaced Saw Cleaver for me. It's a little heavier feeling than Cleaver, but the whip mode is just.... holy fuck. Doing 1500 damage in 2 hits from 25 feet away - there's nothing else like it. With Saw Cleaver, I almost NEVER used the transform mode, but Cutter's whip / sword combo really has versatility, I switch to it all the time. Spamming R1 with Cleaver was getting boring after like 80 hours...

So I created a new character to play thru since my NG+++ character would likely get f$$$ed up.

But now I'm stuck on BSB. I NEVER had this much trouble with him before. Have easily been killed by him 10-15 times.

It's a really really good game, possibly the best in the "series," but I honestly wonder if a bit of fatigue is setting in at this point in time. I've had a raging Souls boner since Demon's, but this is sitting somewhere in the middle of my goty list. I think it will actually gain more recognition as time goes on rather than during this goty "season."

Can I ask what the general consensus on this DLC is? I've been avoiding discussion because I'm a spoiler baby.

When he gets mad and berserk you keep back stepping and he gets you with his combos?

Incredible DLC, especially if you like a real challenge.

The
Fisherman place
is really playing havoc with my trypophobia, makes me all itchy. Same with
Ludwig's first phase with all the eyes
.

Really enjoying it though apart from that. The soundtrack is fantastic.
