So im new to the blu-ray game, and was wondering about something -

Are these discs really scratch proof

I recently recieved the Psycho-Pass anime series as a gift, yet, upon looking i found a light line (scratch) on the blu-ray.

Now funimation is horrible at manufacturing these discs so this was no surprise to me, but i heard that blu-rays are not supposed to have the slightest of line markings on them, and a slight blemish can render the disc useless.

So, are blu-rays just like dvd's in the sense that they will still play with minor/slight markings, OR are they basically useless upon getting even the slightest mark?

I have no idea GAF, so im asking you posters here. Enlighten me.

obviously a scratch on a blu-ray will affect it more since the information is more dense...

in that sense they are more fragile.

but I don't think they are any harder or easier to scratch than anything else.

Why don't you try playing it and find out?

BRD's in general are more resilient to scratches, but obviously not invincible.

Blu-rays are more difficult to scratch than DVDs. That said, I believe that the data is stored closer to the surface by comparison, hence why it's much more of a problem for one of them to be damaged.

They have a hardened coating (due to plastic that protects the readable surface being so thin) thats more scratch resistant than what you normally see on a DVD, but I wouldn't be surprised if they become just as unreadable as DVDs would if they have a similar scratch or mark on them.

Haven't had any scratched blu-rays yet, but my son has started handling them (poorly). I have definitely experienced playback issues with greasy, smudged fingerprints on the surface of the disc. Thankfully that can all be wiped off to fix that problem.

Oh man. I still don't understand why grown people hold discs so they get fingerprints on the underside of the disc.

To all who buy anime from funimation, BE WARNED that they manufacture the discs POORLY and the innree rings can be cracked as well as the rims.

And also, i have bought different series that come the same way psycho pass has

For instance, the 25th anniversary editio of Akira on Blu-ray, or FMA brotherhood on DVD

Its awful, i dont understand how they get away with this.

I put in an exhange request with amazon, and hopefully this batch is better, if im not im seriously just going to keep getting exchanges till i get a good set

Edit: if any of you have any blu ray lying around, put em to the light, check to see if they have light marks an if they play fine
