Can anybody cite an example of which a sequal to a total failure in the same named product line succeeded?

in video game terms, the sega genesis. The mastersystem got OWNED by the nes, but the genesis was very successfull. even though it didn't end up winning in the long run it did well enough that sega should have been able to build on it's success.

edit// i see i was already beaten to the punch with this example.

well, this definitely shows how much effort ms is willing to put this time around.

i must say, im not too excited for this, but i'd imagine it'll do better than average numbers.

picking up Q was an excellent choice though. that was good thinking MS.

over all, we're in for a lot of merging. it's going to happen a lot sooner than anyone thinks too. i give it about 2-3 years. we'll have 5-7 big players.
with the beginning of next gen, a lot of random shit is gonna happen as far as third party support goes. certain upcoming shifts are going to cause for a bit more balance next gen.

there's going to be less a lot less third party exclusives due to rise of development cost, so only super bought out games will be exclusive.

but there's gonna be more balance next gen.

or Nintendo could just end up having a Revolution. something that no one could pass up. who knows.

More balance bewteen all three hardware companies? Or just MS and Sony?

There could be more about this game than just this :)
what the hell does that mean. more media? or something along the lines of an entire online part of the game that isnt known yet?

Pretty insightfull.

Unfortunatly it does seem as though this industry is headed towards a more Hollywood style format :(

Hopefully it does not get too ugly

That he knows something and is under NDA or some shit. Spill the beans!!!!!

Awesome news. Can't wait to see actual game screens.

I wonder what Sakaguchi's got in the works for PS3? Surely he isn't going to limit himself to just Microsoft next round. He needs to take on Final Fantasy head-to-head.

You'll understand in a few weeks hopefully. I get very few infos from Japan so they may not be as reliable as what I know usually, but if it turns out to be true then it should be quite interesting :)

Windows = Tottally new area.

Eh, what? And you're still ignoring the Genesis, although as I said you obviously phrased your statement to avoid that example :lol.

Anyway, I'm mildly interested. I'm not a big fan of most anime stylings in general, but Toriyama's art has always appealed to me. I'm more curious about Sakaguchi's "realistic" RPG though.

Doesn't he have 5 games in development (2 for X360, 1 for DS)?

Can't wait to see more of this game. Already my interesting went up 100%.

As ferr pointed out to me and I am stealing to point out here: MS last generation would never have thought to debut in Jump.

This game is being marketed as a Sakaguchi/Toriyama collaboration first, as a Japanese shonen RPG second, and as an Xbox 360 title third, if at all.

This is a smarter Microsoft, and this will be a better war.
I don't think MS had much of a choice here -- anything and everything Toriyama does that's game-related debuts in Jump. It's probably a clause in his contract or something.

Not to discredit MS or anything -- this is great news no matter how you look at it. But I don't think MS had much to do with not debuting in Jump last generation -- they would've if they could've, but they just didn't have anything worthwhile enough and that would've fit the demographic.

Depends how well this does, I guess... and are you 100% sure FF will be on PS3? :P

neo: did anyone scan the new Tales info from there?

BTW, when is this from? The new issue is out today, and it's not in there -- could this be from NEXT week's issue already? Maybe it's been printed already because of the Golden Week holiday?

I think MS has got him locked up, actually.. right?

why isn't this taking on FF head on?

I'm 100% sure it will be on PS3.
I'm slightly less sure it will be on PS3 exclusively, however.

It's sounding more and more in Square Enix's interest to not be tied to one particular console. I'm pretty sure FF would sell on whatever console it's released, and if it's release across all the next gen consoles, then that just equates to more sales.

Just curious, what kinda math is being applied here? :)

On to my point

On Gamespot, I read that Hironobu Sakaguchi wasn't concerned about console wars and that his only projects are on the 360 currently. Subject to change of course, but that is where he stands right now. Not to mention Microsoft is doing the actual coding for these games

This is true; however, Sony may offer powerful money hats to keep FF and DQ, at least, PS-exclusive. I wouldn't be surprised to see other franchises go multi, though.

all 3 for sure. developers can't resist the new flow Nintendo has going on.
flow? What flow?

They need to find another money hat for KH while they're at it.

slightly off-topic:

Microsoft should make a new Japanese company with Japanese name and logo and Japanese everything, that sells the Xbox 360 in Japan. and its called 'something 360' - it will ensure at least 5x more sales than if 'Microsoft Xbox360' is the name and company that the Japanese videogamers and Japanese masses, see.

I see KH as the most likely to go multi, as Disney Interactive calls half the shots, and KH is Square Enix's most popular franchise in the West this generation - where the Xbox has found the most success.

In general, I hope that Japanese developers learn to develop multiplatform titles next generation - it's long overdue.

They probably realize they will soon have no choice if they want to stay afloat or remain profitable at a respectable evel.

flow
v. flowed, flow·ing, flows
v. intr.

1. To move or run smoothly with unbroken continuity, as in the manner characteristic of a fluid.
2. To proceed steadily and easily.
3. To exhibit a smooth or graceful continuity.
4. To hang loosely and gracefully: The cape flowed from his shoulders.

6. To arise; derive: Many conclusions flow from this hypothesis.
7. To menstruate.
all im saying is, they're flowing with tradition.

I'd love to see KH2 for 360. I have money on the PS2 version, I'd move it over if it made it to launch. I remember the Enix guys telling people they were watching the 360. Microsoft has really stepped up to the plate.

I'm hoping that Nintendo go down the DS style route with the Revolution. I.E. try something new. Because i'm digging the DS.

Any word on when we'll see screenshots?

I think I remember reading that Famistu will have a blowout on one of the RPGs like 4 days before E3 or something.

Question for all the J-residents here:

Does the average Japanese gamer actually know who Toriyama, Mizuguchi, Okamoto and Sakaguchi are? Are they really household names?

My impression is that the average guy on the street knows FF and DQ, but doesn't really know much about the creators behind them. Is that entirely off base?

Man, they DEFINITELY know who Toriyama is.

I'm don't think Mizuguchi or Sakaguchi are necessarily household names, although that can quickly change :P
