Boehner: Nation on the path to default if Obama doesn't give concessions for ACA

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said the nation would default on its debt later this month if President Obama does not agree to GOP’s demands to cut spending and change parts of the Affordable Care Act.

Appearance on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, Boehner agreed that the risks of defaulting would be “catastrophic,” leading credit markets to freeze, the dollar to lose its value, and interest rates to skyrocket, precipitating another financial crisis. But, he insisted that “the president is putting the nation at risk by his refusal to have a conversation”:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (HOST): Let me press that. There have been some reports that you have told your own members that you would be willing to put a debt limit on the floor that would pass with democratic votes, even if it didn’t get a majority of the republican caucus. Is that no longer true?

BOEHNER: My goal here is not to have the United States default on its debt. My goal is to have a serious conversation about those things that are driving the deficit and the debt up and the president’s refusal to sit down and have a conversation about this is putting our nation.

STEPHANOPOULOS: He continues to refuse to negotiate, the country is going to default?

BOEHNER: That’s the path we’re on.
The president canceled his trip to Asia. I assume — he wants to have a conversation. I decided to stay here in washington this weekend. He knows what my phone number is. All he has to do is call.

Since walking away from two so-called grand bargains in 2011 — which would have reduced the deficit by increasing revenue and lowering spending on certain entitlement programs — Boehner and other Congressional leaders met with Obama to discuss the standoff on Wednesday, though no deal was reached.

As Obama continues to insist that he will only negotiate with Republicans after they re-open the federal government by passing a clean continuing resolution and raise the debt ceiling, GOP lawmakers in battleground states are seeing their poll numbers drop and veteran Republican donors are becoming “increasingly alarmed by the defiant stance of hard-line conservatives.”

This is pure economic terrorism. Fuck these assholes.

These guys are going to destroy our economy. All this talk and rhetoric about American exceptionalism is going to be hilarious in the wake of this.

And everybody knows the best way to curb spending is to default and get our interest rates jacked up so we owe even more money. Sound plan Boehner.

Boehner is such a horrible speaker. I still dont think he's going to allow this to happen. His legacy is going to be getting absolutely nothing done except for a few cases where democrats supported him, an unpopular government shutdown, and then defaulting on the debt.

He's a whiny sloppy loser but I really don't think he could be that limp.

The GOP needs to get over their butthurt feelings for the ACA. I hope this continues to bite them in the ass.

I didn't realise until this whole shutdown thing just how democratically illegitimate the House of Reps is. The Dems got over a million more votes in the popular vote for the House and yet them controlling it seems like an incredibly far off possibility.

And then on top of this, the whole 'majority of the majority' thing, which is fucked up beyond belief. I'm glad we don't have any shit like that over here or we wouldn't have passed equal marriage.

Basically the whole system of Congress is a joke, you guys should sort it out. Move to a more proportional system or counteract gerrymandering somehow.

This is total political suicide. I can't imagine how any of these fools could get reelected, even by the ones who are against ACA. This is a horrible, unprofessional, and immature way to go.

Never negotiate with terrorists.

On a less inflammatory note, I sincerely hope that this whole "crisis" is resolved as soon as possible. Intentionally inflicting direct harm on the economy is nearly an antithesis of the legislative branch's duty to the country.

Something else that kills me is you always hear the republicans talk about how weak Obama looks. How do you think the rest of the world is feeling about us now?

Oh that's right. No one from the Republican Party cares how things look unless its about making Obama look bad.

I think the republicans who feel this is a good idea are the same ones who thought Romney would win. They're in their own bubble.

BOEHNER: My goal here is not to have the United States default on its debt.

There is an easy way to achieve this if you weren't a lying sack of crap.

Sad that veteran conservatives are only now realizing that they hitched their wagon to a bunch of crazy horses. What does Boehner get out of this? His legacy will be one of gross malfeasance if he lets this happen.

Let me assume one thing he gets out of this: Money? Nothing else comes to mind that would allow someone to go this crazy.

time to sell some stocks
The conversation w/ Paul/McConnell was amazing for the way they were shocked that the White House was telling people the same thing privately as it was publicly.

We know the GOP has not been doing that - they're saying different things to Wall Street, to the Tea Party, in negotiations, and publicly.

Not only that, veterans relying on the GI Bill to put them through school and receiving a housing stipend are covered for this month but not November.

Given the stated Republican objective of intransigence with respect to any and all Democratic policy proposals, that seems like a win to me. What's Obama's major domestic policy legacy? The ACA, the Consumer Protection Bureau and... ... ... ...? Immigration reform? DOA. Card check? Couldn't even pass it under the Democrats. Substantive action on climate change? Nope. Medicare volume prescription drug negotiation discounts? No. Any kind of democratic reform? Nope. Closed Guantanamo? No. Sentencing reform? No. Hell, has Obama even been able to appoint enough people to fill most of the major federal agency or court vacancies? Nope. Republicans have won on every single one of those issues despite wide public support for most. Now some of that isn't the House's fault, most of that couldn't pass the Senate during the years of a strong Democratic majority. But certainly by having no legacy, Boehner has successfully torpedoed Obama's domestic policy legacy.

That's not to say I don't think Obama has done anything. He's been a very effective leader in some other respects. Generally good use of the bully pulpit, his staff hires have gone a long way to undo the joe-from-bible-college level nonsense picks Bush tried to elevate, good SCOTUS picks, and I believe that his public turnaround on same-sex marriage has helped accelerate public conversion on the issue. And in foreign policy, while he certainly hasn't been ideal in my opinion, he's obviously gotten things done in the manner he intends to.

But just to point out, of Boehner can retire and say "I stopped the Democrats from delivering a single piece of substantive legislation", he's no loser, he's a winner by his own standards.

Edit: Actually, to be fair, I didn't include Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. They did get that done. During the Democratic majority. Days after Obama became president.

Obama is the president that "caught" bin Laden.
They might not want to make a big deal out of it, but I think reminding the people every now and then might just be enough.

Good points throughout. But I wouldnt be so quick to write off Immigration Reform yet. Its going to be the next major thing after dust settles, and its going to pass in some way.

Terrible speaker. Fuck him and the tea party. Speaking of which, there was a gathering of like 30-40 tea baggers on one of the streets near my house yesterday. They were standing on the part of the street that is the overpass for I-95 holding signs that said "Defund Obamacare" and all kinds of crap and I don't even live in a red state. There are a lot of stupid ass people in this country. I wish we would just let them secede or something. I'm getting tired of their childlike behavior.

I have a feeling that we are going to go over the fiscal cliff. If this was going to be wrapped up before then it would have been wrapped up last week. Republicans are going to destroy the economy to 'hurt' Obama.

I seriously hope that another black guy gets the democratic nomination for 2016...like Corey Booker or something and that he wins just to stick it to these racist fucks.

Obama didn't catch UBL, it was the IC. In fact, we would of had UBL sooner if Obama didn't dismantle our intelligence collection network.
