Boehner: Nation on the path to default if Obama doesn't give concessions for ACA

So default refers to not paying any invoice, rather than just debt? This is not the impression I have of what defaulting means.

There isn't a system in place to stop payments on non-debt items. So all the invoices will be paid until the system hits its limit and stops all payments. T Bills are scheduled to hit maturity every day, so the first that matures after the money runs out will be the default.

Fuck these guys, terrorists basically. President should not give one inch on the ACA. It has been voted on, passed and accounted for. How dare the GOP do this. Holding our economy hostage. Fuck them. Starve them out. Don't negotiate with terrorists.
Government by ransom note, as it's been called.

Because he is the damn president. Avoiding a national crisis is his #1 job, after that he can play politics and push his agenda, he can play the blame game later.

His first job is to uphold the law, law which was passed by congress and tested by the Supreme Court.

What if the republicans threaten to shutdown the government unless the president signs off on ignoring the law that stops people from, I don't know, stabbing you in the face with a knife? Sounds cool, right? Can play politics after you're dead.

So the one time Obama is not playing politics and wants people to follow the law he is getting blamed for playing politics?!? Fucking lol..

Jesus people.

And this is why I stay out of political discussions at work. I hear people making the same kinds of arguments and I just want to go off on them but I know they're too thick headed to understand.

Fucking hell, it's gets more and more crazy the more I hear about it.
Can't you just arrest him or something?

You would think, right? Domestic Terrorism should definitely be applied in this case.

I'm not concerned. The votes are there, and Boehner has already told Wall Street and House republicans that he won't allow a default. He's just waiting as long as possible so he can say "we tried, we fought hard, but we couldn't get it done..."

If he simply caved right away it would cause a revolt in his party.
Clean anything, caving on debt limit, etc., no matter when = revolt in GOP. So that is why I and others are questioning his legitimacy here when he's telling people it'll be okay in private meetings.

Regardless of when Boehner caves the Tea Party caucus will be at his throat. So why drag us through another week of this shit? Just do it, Boehner.

So wait a sec. If the vote got put to the house, then the budget would get passed? It's just the republican speaker isn't allowing the vote to take place?

The republican speaker has not allowed a vote to take place yes. Whether the house has the votes to pass it or not is some debate. Napkin math says yes, Boehner says they don't. Considering he's full of shit and fears for his job, they probably do.

And yet, 90+% of people in congress causing this situation will be re-elected. You could literally destroy your country and still get re-elected.
For their voter base, stubbornness is a trait to be admired, especially when that means they aren't capitulating to a boogeyman that embodies everything that scares them.

As usual the Onion is brilliant

They haunt my dreams at night. I have this one nightmare where I’m about to ask for a vote on a clean continuing resolution and then one of them—I think it’s Steve King from Iowa—looks at me with this eerie smile and says, “No, John. No you won’t.” And then the rest of them are suddenly standing behind him and they all chant in a chilling monotone, “No, John. No you won’t.” And then I wake up screaming, “No, John!!! No you won’t!!!” and I’m crying, and my wife is crying, and I’ve sweat through my sheets.

And he has the theoretical power to stall that vote indefinitely? What the hell, so much for democratic process.

He acts as though he has no part to play in this whole mess. Deferring all of the responsibility of this mess to Obama is disingenuous.

Senator Cruz/Paul/and the rest of the tea party elements of the GOP are ridiculous. They are remaining headstrong throughout this whole mess. At least there are a few sensible members of the Republican House that understand what this mess is doing to America, and are willing to approve a clean CR.

Caving would cause a national crisis of epic proportions. It signals that a party can halt the government when they don't have the votes to change laws that have been passed by all sections of the government and even upheld by the supreme court. It would literally destroy the way our government functions. It basically will mean that votes are absolutely meaningless.

There is no Democratic process with Republicans.
It's whine and kick and scream until you get what you want, even if you don't know what that is.

If only the real news was like that. That segment should be played on every station for the next 48 hours.

It's so true too. Unfortunately whoever said that stuff in the real world would get sued for slander like no other

Because he's a cowardly cunt. The most vile type of piece of shit to exist. He and his grotesque ilk do nothing for this country and its people.

I can't wrap my head around letting the country fall into default to stop a law that is already funded and passed. So much for the democratic process am I right?!

Lets get this country back to where it needs to be by hostage taking and breaking the rules with a routine budget resolution.

Makes perfect fucking sense.

My mind is full of fuck.

People claim that the wealthy and powerful control the Republican party. So why are they allowing this? Some CEO or investment banker really doesn't give a shit about Obamacare, if taking a stand on it is going to cause all his investments to collapse when a default tanks the market.

It seems to me that as the deadline looms nearer and the stock market begins a nasty downturn America's rich fatcats will call up all the people who they've contributed millions to and say "What the fuck are you doing? Stop this!" And it will be over very quickly.

Thank you 1%'ers!

The problem Is the TEA party and a spineless fucking speaker. Look at all the tweets from old time republicans in the house that said from day 1 they will pass a clean bill. These fuckers want anarchy and to shut down Obamas America.

Obama is holding an untenable position. A position of no negotiation only works in limited circumstances. You'd think the Democrats would be a little smarter than this. But I guess that's what makes them Democrats.

Your modern day Republican Party.

Watch fox news right now. Its hilarious.

Rove is off his rocker.

I will always remember him freaking out on Fox after they called Ohio for Obama. That was magnificent.

They're slowly starting to realize they've lost control.

Huh? Obama is making a stand, finally. As he should. He should not negotiate on something that is already law. Especially when "negotiating" is giving the other side everything they want and you get 75 days worth of funding in return ..

Oh I dunno, "we are offering nothing, give us what we want" seems like a pretty good position to ignore

Custer finally made a stand too.

Obama has to negotiate at some point. That's the weakness in his hardass position.

Forget ITT, did you see the reactions after Obama won 2012? The REST OF THE FUCKING WORLD knew that he was going to win. But some Americans actually thought that Romney was going to win, and almost broke down...

Yeah, that was HILARIOUS.

I didn't have to buy salt for a whole month.

Sorry if it has been explained a bunch, but what happens if our country defaults?

No-one knows exactly. But its bad. Basically the entire world economy is, no joke, founded on the premise that US debt is the most reliable investment in the world. If that's no longer true things could get ugly.

It's not a false equivalency when you admit they're not the same or equivalent.

To imply the two are even remotely close enough to bother mentioning in the same thread might as well be a false equivalency.

It's like complaining about petty theft in a thread about the Boston bomber.

how can a system built on a principle of checks and balances have so much riding on one man?

My gf's "analysis" of the situation is so infuriating.

"Obama's in his last term, he doesn't have to worry about re-election, why doesn't he just put his foot down?"

Me: "What can he do? It's not his job to pay these people. He's not going to stop Obamacare."

"He almost made us go to war! He needs to stop being such a pussy and do something!"

Me: *pinches nose*

Is it possible that could be a good thing (eventually). It seems the whole economy is based on debt, couldn't this force us to focus on what we have now instead of promises for the future? I mean, it's already a little ugly now, could something like this shake things up to restructure our priorities?

Again, I'm ignorant to most economy and budgeting talk so I'm probably talking out my ass here. Just trying to wrap my head around it.
