Borderlands 4 Launches To Mostly Negative Steam Reviews Over Performance Issues And Crashing

Just a few hours after release, Borderlands 4 has already managed to hit Mostly Negative reviews on Steam, with the vast majority of them complaining about performance issues. It's already being described as "a stutter-ridden mess", while there are plenty of reviews that also complain about frequent crashing. Maybe that Conan O'Brien promo video wasn't scripted after all.

It's even worse the further you dive into the reviews too, as a lot of the positive ones also mention there are problems with optimization, input lag, and stuttering, which are at their worst when there are a lot of enemies on screen. From these reviews, it sounds as though Borderlands 4 is in pretty rough shape for anyone that doesn't have a super computer to hand.

You also have a couple of reviews once again blaming Unreal Engine 5 for the issues — and while Epic says it's not the engine's fault but the developers using it — you can't blame fans for thinking it's the problem. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers are just two examples of Unreal Engine 5 games launching with performance issues, and it's becoming more and more difficult to believe that this is a developer problem.

Can confirm; played for about an hour so far. ctd Unreal Engine error report followed. There's also some nasty audio glitching, like static and distortion. Nvidia did release a Game Ready driver yesterday. Going to see if that helps. Otherwise, fantastic game so far!

I mean, UE5 ain't great, but there's been proof that you can make it pretty decent if you have the right people on it. I know this isn't too uncommon for the PC market, but they really need to try and do better, lmao.

I'm curious how a regular psycho enemy from all the games compare in terms of model/texture & shader complexity.
I don't ask them to optimize like Kaze Emanuar, but I think their performance targets are lost in space.

Someone said that Borderlands 4 runs worse than Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing on PC :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I'm glad I don't have an ounce of interest in borderlands game. What a fuckup.

What does the barrel mean?
It's from Final Fantasy XIV (the online game). The first version of the game had certain items (like the flowerpot prop) with unreasonably high polycounts and shader complexity, for an MMO. A few of those in a scene tanked performance for players.
They fixed it, relaunched the game with improved engine and stricter polycounts and turned it profitable.

Are these games not play tested? It takes 6 years to make a game and this is how they run? The price of this fucking game. $130 for the "super deluxe" edition.

I do get the sense that most games only do optimization for the consoles and expect PCs to brute force it with better hardware. The optimized GPU driver might make a bit of a difference.

I gave up on PC start of this console gen.

There's no optimizing by anyone. I'll stick to console. Even 5090s can't handle some of the shit these bozo devs are making.

DLSS quality means that your game running at 720p internally
Then that means that Thief1987 is trying to run the game NO DLSS and is unable to get 1080P 60?
I'll run my 4070 again with no DLSS and see how bad it gets. BRB

edit-I ran turned DLSS to full resolution at 1080 it drops to the mid 40 FPS I saw it hit 45 several times.
I think it looks fine in DLSS quality.
4k Dlss ultra performance isn't doable with my RTX 4070 without turning things way down, especially the lighting.

These performance levels for what it is ultimately a pretty stylised game that doesn't look much better than BL3 seem, frankly, terrible. UE5 working it's magic once again.

I thought I was completely finished with the series, but the game quickly hooked me. The game is well made and looks really good with RTX HDR. Can't wait to co-op it with my son.

For the record, the game crashed a lot - until I installed the brand new Nvidia drivers. Didn't have a single crash after that. And thanks to DLSS I'm playing it with 4K output at max settings at ~240 fps. Good times 😄

But yeah, seriously, UE5 hasn't been as good for the industry as everyone hoped. Optimization is essential.

Game is super CPU heavy for some reason. Stutters.... typical UE5 stuff. Game is also using Denuvo and something else (may impact cpu).

Game also is open world it seems, the worst thing you can do on UE5.
Also, this is borderlands first areas, endgame on UVHM ll just melt some PCs.

Thats like saying PS3's Cell processor was not a piece of shit hardware, you just needed really good devs to take advantage of it. Dedication yo.

The best tools are those that make difficult things easy, I don't think this is a revolutionary concept.

I'm running the game at 4K max settings but using performance DLSS with my RTX 3090. It looks great and runs fine on my PC. I did have one crash during the 5 hour session I just played but hopefully they can patch it. The game is a lot of fun!

Edit: oh, and sometimes I have to manually stop the game via Steam when I close it because it just keeps running for some reason.

I mean UE5 does make creating class-leading graphics ultra easy. Look at games like Expedition 33, these graphics being done with a team that wouldn't fill up a bus is a spectacular thing.

The real big issue is graphics cards not going up or even staying the same in $$$/perf. Top of the line cards are delivering uplifts that past midrange cards used to.
