Borderlands 4 Makes CEO "A Little Nervous" Due To The Game's Challenging Sections

Borderlands 4 makes Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford "a little nervous" because some parts of the game are "more challenging" than players might be expecting. Speaking to Insider Gaming, Pitchford said there are many Borderlands players who aren't looking for much challenge out of their experience, and parts of the game might test them like the franchise has not before.

"We have lots of players that actually aren't interested in deep, hard challenges; lots of people that love just exploring the Borderlands or spending time with the characters," Pitchford said. "I'm a little nervous because there are points of Borderlands 4 that are more challenging."

The executive went on to say that if any players are struggling, they can "just grind somewhere" and level up their character to become more powerful to help them get past where they are stuck.

"You will find that things that were hard when you were a little chump will become trivial when you become a badass," Pitchford said. "But we definitely have pushed the challenges quite a lot, especially with bosses and boss fight mechanics."

I can't say deep, hard challenges are what I think of when I think of BL. They're games where you either meet the level scaling enough to survive or you take more damage and dish out less. Maybe you can have extra survivability if you're skillful enough as with most games, but by and large it's a numbers game.

I'm interested to see if there's any merit to what he's saying.

I still enjoy the BL art style, game loop, and gun play. I don't enjoy his commentary, the writing, or the voice acting.

Making it a little more challenging is a-okay with me though. The sleepy nature of cake-walking through dungeon crawlers can get old. I'd rather see them go full Diablo and just put in a bunch of difficulty levels that adjust all the stats to make it harder. Give me an infinite grind with NG+ mode.

Soooo...just play the game? lol. Randy really needs to stop talking about this game.

Great. We are bringing the challenge back.

Sorry laid back gamers. You can still play your cozyslop, but we are soulsing all the things, so prepare yourself.

It was always like this before. I remember Mega Man was a bitch.

So you suffer now. Once you are broken down, your inner power will unlock and no game will be difficulty anymore. Just ask an Elden Ring fan. These are the lessons of Dragon Ball. These are the lessons of life. These were once the lessons of videogames, then they decided that they needed to make everything easier, for the lowest common denominator. And you fell for it softly. Quietly. Slowly. You enjoyed the warmth and attention, but you have no idea why you are bored by every videogame that comes out today. We know. A true saiyan craves a challenge. They fight for honor and pride and redemption. There is no success without failure and that is what everyone else has figured out but you. You know it too you just don't want to admit it because you will have to train again. You just want to get old and tired and worse at gaming with each passing year. Fight it. Fight back and win back your pride. Once you have found it you will realize what has been missing all along. Otherwise you can just lay up and be "a little nervous" about the difficulty of your videogame just like Hollywood Randy.

The Takedowns on BL3 were quite a bit more than just numbers, especially the second one. It's like the raid bosses from the previous games (some of which were already very challenging), but packaged as a full fucking dungeon.

Ah okay, fair enough. I haven't played 3 and never heard about that, but it's good to know. I might get 3 one day.

he should be nervous about the game selling well after all this shit character trailers, also the colors are way too saturated, it looks like a rainbow diarrhea sometimes, remember when the game was about a fucking wasteland of a planet ?

I'm fine with challenges but I really don't know how much I trust them to create them. I remember most of the bosses in BL3 were only challenges insofar as they were bullet sponges with cheap mechanics. The penn and teller boss comes to mind. If the boss fights in 4 are like that, then meh.

Takedown at the Guardian Breach on True Vualt Hunter Mode at Mayhem mode 11 was perfect and hard as hell in Borderlands 3.👌 I can only hope there is similar challenges in BL4.

I watched several of the Gamescom 25 minute demo playthroughs where journalists appeared to struggle a bit. But I think that can be chalked up to being thrown into the game at level 20 in a vault with no explanation of the mechanics really, or a chance to get a feel for the game. The section looked pretty chaotic with a lot of armored enemies too, so I could see that being very challenging for some.

Me personally, I think Randy is using this as a marketing technique for players that actually do look for a more difficult game, especially with soulslikes as popular as they are right now. People might dislike Randy and think he's a douche bag, but he's not an idiot, and knows exactly what he's doing in regard to marketing.

Yeah I don't see this game flopping. It's #8 in the top sellers on Steam a week from launch. Easy to assume there's similar interest on consoles if not more.

Outer Worlds 2 will be the big flop of the holiday. Still out in the stratosphere at 1000+ in the top sellers. Damn..

Mayim Bialik's really let herself go.

I'm reading that this game appears to struggle to hit 60 fps in single player on PS5, and lacks split screen co-op on PC. Neither version is really an option for me if those both hold true.

Between this and the apparent MGS Delta performance issues, I may have saved roughly $140 today.

I wonder how many of the new characters are gay?

In the last entry we found out almost everyone of note was queer... they didn't even spare Tiny Tina!!!

The point is that back in BL1 and 2 It wasnt forced, there is gay ppl in this world we created as there is gay ppl in real life Ok ? but since BL3 they've been forcing they hand on this LGTV4kOLED+ dumpster, there is a fucking gay wedding DLC on BL3 ffs.

I like Flack been a non binary, ppl ll reach for their mental illness, the character is a fucking robot XD

I highly doubt it. Difficulty for these devs are just tons of hp and call it a day. I had to use a mod to make BL3 challenging that increased enemy damage and whatnot, even on Mayhem 11 I was just shredding enemies left and right with my friend.

If I can respawn endlessly just by paying some % of money I have, it completely trivialises the challenge in these games.

Hopefully they find a better system for this game.

"Challenging" in a modern AAA game just means normal difficulty as opposed to being tailored for the lowest common denominator. It doesn't actually mean hard.
