Borderlands 4's Price Is A Mystery, Even To Randy Pitchford

Borderlands 4 launches in September, and the head of its developer claims he doesn't know what the price will be. Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford was asked at PAX East today if he could reveal the game's price point, and he said it could be more or less than what people expect.

"I'll tell you the truth, I don't know," he said. "That is the truth."

"It's an interesting time. On one level, we've got a competitive marketplace where people who make [pricing] choices want to sell as many units as possible and they want to be careful about people that are price-sensitive," he added. "So there are some folks who don't want to see prices go up, even the ones deciding what the prices are. There are other folks accepting the reality that game budgets are increasing and there are tariffs for the retail packaging. It's getting gnarly out there."

Pitchford went on to say that Borderlands 4 has "more than twice" the development budget of Borderlands 3. He said preorders for Borderlands 4 will open "soon," and that's when people can find out the price.

Yeah, the publishers sets the price point, not the developer (unless they are also the publisher). They should be asking Take Two.

I'd say they had a relatively positive vibe going for it after the state of play...

why they go and say dumb shit when the getting is good.

people were at best on the side of cautiously optimistic and now they are gonna push us all back into BL is crap territory

Today, Eddings has gone deeper into his allegations in an interview with Newsweek, in which he details the specifics of his assault claim and says he was "rage fired" shortly after.

One of the incidents Eddings describes in the interview sounds like an attempt at playful (albeit wholly inappropriate) horseplay: While he waited in a sound booth to perform as Claptrap as part of a studio tour for former 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann, Pitchford entered the booth, pulled off Eddings' headphones, and gave him a wet willy. After that, "he jumped back and he cackled at me," Eddings said. "Christoph and I are looking at each other like, what just happened?"

The alleged assault was more serious. Eddings said it took place at the 2017 Game Developers Conference at the Marriott Marquis hotel, during which he was told by two separate people that someone named Greg Richardson was inquiring about a price on Gearbox. Pitchford and Richardson apparently knew either other at that point: the ongoing lawsuit between Gearbox and former counsel Wade Callendar alleges that they had worked together on prior financial deals.

Eddings says that when he approached Pitchford about it, Pitchford demanded to know where he got the information, and became angry when Eddings refused to tell him.

"He shoved the fuck out of me while I'm on the balls of my feet trying to whisper. [He] knocked me back four steps... I believe I caught him in a deception," Eddings said.

He also named two witnesses to the encounter: One told Newsweek that he didn't see what actually happened but that Eddings was "noticeably upset about what he described as an altercation with his boss" shortly after, but the other, Gearbox co-founder Landon Montgomery, confirmed it, saying, "David leaned up to whisper something to Randy and out of the blue, Randy shoves him, hard."

Randy's looking rough.

Devs/publishers: Whine about the price and how they can't feed their children selling games for just $70.
Also devs/publishers: "So for this new game we spent MORE THAN TWICE as much as on our previous one"

I actually burst out laughing at that photo of him in the OP, felt a little bit bad and then I read that story about him giving a wet willy to the voice actor.

I believe it should be totally appropriate to break someones finger(s) it they do that, its definitely some autism related thing for me but when someone does that (I can't say its happened more than a few times in my life) I find it so wholly inappropriate and disgusting I can't be responsible for what I'll do next to the person that does it to me.

Anyway, I dunno how much it'll cost either, who cares it looks tired and done anyway. That's coming from someone who played BL2 for 2500 hours.

Agreed.

They need to additionally focus on capturing the Destiny audience who's currently lost at sea waiting on a sequel or spiritual successor. The #1 impression I heard from everywhere about this game is that it looks more like a Destiny game.

Randy and his team could lean into that a bit more.

Randy, I really love this bow tie and overall snazzy look. It's great and it suits you. I hope that famous suit guy on twitter does a thread about it.

This picture makes him look like a lesbian ice cream shop owner.

I really have to ask what exactly causes a series with the same loop that's been refined like a fine paste to balloon so much in budget? Same thing I ask about Spider-Man 2 which was a texture pack and maybe 1/10th of "new" city that could've just been reskins of existing buildings. I'm in it day 1 anyway

Quick question..

I was going to reinstall the 2nd game last night but the reviews on Steam now say the game has now been patched lately with literal spyware..

Is that true?

There's two numbers Randy hates being asked about: the price of his games, and the age of the 'magicians' on that USB stick.

Jesus Christ dudes, please spoiler tag Randy's photos or at least put a warning in the thread title or something. :lollipop_confounded:

I mean, it's really no mystery you guys. The standard edition will either be $69.99 or $79.99. Given Nintendo and Xbox's pricing moves the last 45 days, higher chance than ever of hitting that $79.99 range since everyone else is moving to that. 🤷‍♂️
