Boston: One dead, one captured, city re-opened

According to what I just heard on the radio this is false. They have apparently been in the states for years and went to school here. NPR just had an interview with someone that went to school with the one on the run.

They apparently went to primary school in Dagestan.

There father has a Georgian name, mother a Muslim name. That would explain the oddness of the last name. Probably from a mixed Christian/Muslim marriage.

This is a crazy story!

Man Miraculously Survives Boston AND Texas Explosions

Seconds after Joe Berti, 43, crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon, the first bomb exploded. Joe’s wife, Amy, was near the finish
line to take a photograph of her husband finishing the 26.2 mile race. He was uninjured.
Shortly after, the second bomb exploded. Amy was only 10 yards away from the bomb and was also miraculously unhurt, although, the woman next to her had her leg torn off from the knee down.

I had just run to the finish line and… (moments) later I heard the first explosion, and then turned around and sawthe
smoke,” he said. “I knewimmediately that it was a bomb. … Then the second explosion occurred and I sawa wave of people
running.”
Two days later, the couple had returned to their home state of Texas. As he was traveling home from a meeting on Interstate 35, he and felt his second explosion in two days. The fertilizer plant in West, Texas exploded. I was just like, `I can’t believe this!’” said Berti, who said he had never witnessed an explosion before. Then he thought: “I just want to get out of here and get away from all these explosions.”
When a reporter suggested to his wife, Amy, that Joe should stay home for a while, she joked, “We need to keep him moving. Maybe he just
needs to stand in an open field.” People keep saying, `Don’t you feel unlucky?’ and I was actually the opposite – saying not only do I not feel unlucky, but I feel blessed that my wife could be 10 yards from the explosion and not have a scratch.”
The explosions took place roughly 1,875 miles apart, yet, Joe was close enough to feel the power of both blasts.
Pretty sure I want Joe with me when I buy my next lottery ticket.

I Saw that, they were shitting all over CNN and the like. Well deserved criticism too. Al Jazeera had got to be the best television news service out there.

I've got nothing against Al Jazeera, but let's also remember... It's news coverage is carefully controlled by the state of Qatar. Qatar, being fairly independent and liberally-minded in the middle east, means that their coverage is usually pro-democracy... But they also have the ability to pull or add any segment.

Connecticut police on the lookout for a grey Honda CRV, MA plate # 316 ES9

CT GAFers, keep your eyes peeled!

Bloody hell he looks like he's in a music video

Exactly - What doesn't make sense to me - from the quoted pic - is that it looks like he's enjoying the freedom and access to goods that you can get in America. Yet at the same time, this would be the same guy waving burning American flags and decrying the evils of the imperial capitalists. But nevermind the fact that he just went down to mall and got his gucci sunglasses and fancy clothes.

Granted, I'm probably simplifying the situation to much, but it seems odd to me.

CT state police told by Boston authorities that the bombing suspect at large may be operating a gray Honda CRV (plate: 316 ES9) w/ MA tags.

I admit I have gone to reddit for imma but for situations like this GAF is better because it serves a a filter for Reddit's unnavigable interface. I get they have more numbers than us. I choose not to go because many many on GAF are also on Reddit so I feel like only the best and most relevant information comes to GAF by way of them.

Yep. It might take an extra 3-4 minutes but its worth it. I can't make heads or tails of that website - its a disaster and I have no idea why its so heavily used.

Then again, if as many people were actively posting on GAF at the same time it would be a total mess also.

Depends on whether or not you believe in political self-determination as a guiding principle. See also: Kurdistan, Tibet, Basque Territory, Ireland.

Exactly, its a very subjective principle. The people in the area's you mentioned would desire freedom. But people in the controlling countries would desire their dominance of the region.

I wasn't trying to inject my own political beliefs, just point out that your claim was technically a subjective one.

/You should add Catalonia.

Living in the area, this is all so surreal. I used to live about a minute walking distance from that 7 11. And I now live in Cambridge next to Watertown. It sucks to be stuck inside.

Doubt it. With his face out he'd probably have to swim the river at this point.

Not all of it, much coverage is now via the UK

I think Al Jazeera and FOX News are better than many of the other sources on breaking news. They have great networks.

I have no idea what has happened to CNN's.

The analysis sucks on all of them.

True. I used to like CNN's coverage and it's been really bad.

You know, you probably shouldn't give crap to someone/something that you aren't familiar with...

I've learned that lesson! :p Their app actually has their video stream as well as audio only. Pretty cool.

Yeah... Dismissing a huge website like reddit over a few trolls is silly. They do some interesting things that are moderated over there like the iamas.

In general I find IAmA's (and SomethingAwful's Ask/Tell forum, which predates IAmA's; my beef is with the format as a whole) pretty self-indulgent and lazy. First, most people's stories simply aren't interesting. Most people's threads boil down to a variant on "Ask me what it's like to be me with my menial job or very typical problem". More legitimately engaging threads are often fake. As a format, it also encourages the storyteller to withhold--questions should be secondary, a bonus added to a thread that contains interesting stories on its own.

Insofar as famous or prominent people use the forum, that's a better use, but I don't think it's a particularly honest one. It's billed as a direct 1-on-1 connection between expert or celebrity and fan, but given the PR management of the most interesting figures and the selectivity with which they answer the questions, it's not really any more interesting than a late night television interview. Plug your shit, talk about your career, personal story that sounds more personal than it really is, move on.

I'd also add that, much like everything in large userbase geek communities, they're positively fucking infested with braindead meme-driven questions. LOL duck-sized horse are u over 9000 do you even lift?!?! what u think of neil degrasse tyson? stuff. Funny questions are fine, of course, but it seems like a very shallow engagement and a missed opportunity.

I'd be surprised if he managed that, so many police on the scene. Now his face is plastered everywhere, he won't be at large for long.

Dunno if this has been posted;

One thing I keep thinking about is how so few people died from the bombs. The explosions look huge, let alone the fireballs. I know a ton of people have been horrifically injured but man, those sidewalks/pavements were so packed.

An article in the NYT explained why. It didn't detonate high enough. So people avoided having any shrapnel go into organs. But it's also why so many people have lost legs.

Amtrak train was searched by Norwalk, CT police for possible accomplice or family member of Boston suspects, turned up no one of interest

Just woke up after going to bed at 4am. So the missing Brown student isn't even involved? That's a relief. I was feeling awful for his family. Can you imagine how awful the last night must have been for them.

I can't believe people latched onto this...he's not even remotely the same height as suspect 2 and his hair was cropped short at the time of going missing...I realize he had long curly hair at one point but there's no way it grows that fast in a month.

Holy shit, dude picked up his car from the shop on Tuesday. Unless this guy is bullshitting. Took the car unfinished without bumper.
