Eh I'm pretty sure he was just "pronounced dead" at the hospital. I'm sure he died when he was shot a billion times, blew himself up, and then run over. If he survived all that, a 20 minute car ride wasn't going to kill him.

Everyone is starting with the 7-11, but if you're talking about how they were identified, Boston is full of street level surveillance cameras. I believe they identified them as they were shown before the explosions with backpacks, and they were (at least white hat guy, the alive one now) shown leaving the scene without them. I am unsure if they also had direct footage of then dropping off the backpacks. I know there was one shot of the white hat guy without the backpack in the background of the crowd by the finish line, with the backpack clearly visible on the ground in the crowd. There was a news conference last night that released the footage.
