Boston: One dead, one captured, city re-opened

I wonder if these kids are somehow related to the Chechen terrorists in Russia.

I kinda doubt they are directly linked to them. I'd guess it is more that they sympathize with them & their cause and thus this may have been their contribution to the cause. Sorta like some of the other lone-wolf attackers such as the guy who shot up the base in Texas or the guy that left the car with explosives (which failed) in NYC.

I'm getting like nothing at all done today.
Now that things aren't quite as hectic and seem to have slowed down a lot I'm going to try to get some stuff done before the day is gone totally.

How big is this neighborhood they're searching? If everything in Boston is shut down, it seems like it'd be pretty easy to find a used Honda driving around the city.

Pretty big, and the main drag leads straight to the highway. They were probably headed towards 95 north via route 2 before getting cut off by police in mid belmont.

Scary, I have a lot of friends a few blocks from where the police are set up.

What is autogafs take on all this?

Also, kid? Its a grown ass man.

Top 10 Stolen Vehicles

Every year thousands of cars, motorcycles and SUV’s are stolen. Crime experts study the trends of car theft, and produce reports on the vehicles that are most often taken during any given year. The top ten list for 2011 were:

1994 Honda Accord
1998 Honda Civic
2006 Ford Pickup (Full Size)
1991 Toyota Camry
2000 Dodge Caravan
1994 Acura Integra
1999 Chevrolet Pickup (Full Size)
2004 Dodge Pickup (Full Size)
2002 Ford Explorer
1994 Nissan Sentra

If it was in Mexico it will be a Nissan Tsuru.

Yeah, if I didn't have to pick up my kids from school in a few, I'd continue the GAF/Police Scanner binge I've been on all day.

I love when people talk about the suspects. He is a nice kid had a class with him. He was a leader and all this fun stuff. Then we find out they really don't know each other at all.

It was posted on the suspect's Twitter account. It's of him and his friends. The implications are two fold -- that these kids had very expensive vehicles/access to a lot of cash and perhaps whatever that license plate says.

If they had access to a lot of cash, why did they try and rob a 7-11? If they had a lot of cash, why did they carjack a guy and drive him to several ATM's trying to get cash from his account?

Ah, so you are correct there; it appears that in Nevada at least, marijuana use per se as opposed to possession is actually illegal. That's really weird. I have absolutely no idea how they'd charge someone under that statute. Hahaha.
Yeah, it's a bit of a crazy thing to criminalize, and you're right on the money that it's borderline ludicrous to attempt to enforce.

In the Studio 60 episode, a Judge threatens to add use (bumping the package to a class E felony) to the existing possession charge because the evidence in question was a joint that had clearly been partially smoked already. So that'd be one way I suppose.

Nevada has some of the craziest laws punishing marijuana users in the country. Bizarrely, it's decriminalized for medical use there, though... not even that is allowed in my state. :(

I do think shutting down the city was a bad call. I think it sends a bad message to other bad guys. If a couple of kids can hold an American city hostage, what could an organized group of equipped adults do?

Friend interviewed: "He was sociable, not a loner."

Analyst on Fox: "He was a quiet guy, kept to himself."

People always say these things and act surprised.

Human beings snap. They lose their shit. They cover up their flaws. It happens. Apparently most people haven't realized this yet.

Not Russian, but NPR was talking about the Chechen rebellion transforming from a nationalist movement to a religious movement over the past 10 years. The current Chechen government is supported by Russia. There is a Caucus-wide Muslim movement involving several countries and the extremist Chechens have joined it.

The Chechen rebellion movement has always been Islamic based not nationalist based. You don't see Christian Chechans taking a movie theatre by force and killing 130 innocents civilians.

Russia knows how to properly deal with this family if they had anything to do with it.

It's hilarious, and predictable, seeing people trying to associate these guys as Russians and not Muslims.

As if these acts were done for glorious Mother Russia (most Chechens HATE Russia and want nothing to do with Russia) and not based on verses from the Quran.

I believe most people (me included) really really didn't wanted this terrorist attack to be just a bunch of pissed off Muslims. That being said, I never rule out that possibility and in this kind of situations you can't let political correctness or your liberal/conservative point of view cloud your vision. Clear facts need to be taken in order for things to be clear.
