Boy hits puberty at age 1

I didn't know that was possible

Mumbai: In a rare case, a one-year-old boy from Delhi has developed sex organs of a full-grown man – a condition that affects one among a lakh.

The boy Akash (name changed) suffers from the rare medical disorder called precocious or early puberty.

When the toddler was just six months old, his grandparents noticed the abnormal growth. He wasn’t just taller than other babies of his age but his penis too was developing alarmingly.

“We thought he was just a big baby but later everyone started to point out that that this growth couldn’t be normal. His penis had grown to that of a man’s size and we knew something was wrong,” said the boy’s mother, Shabnam Praveen.

“Usually this disorder is caused due to brain or stomach tumour, but we didn’t find anything as such in blood reports. The child was lucky in a way because tumour usually increases complications and leads to cancer,” said the boy’s doctor Dr Vaishakhi Rustagi, consulting paediatric endocrinologist at the Max Super Speciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh.

When Akash was brought to her, he was already 18 months old. His testosterone level was like a 25-year-old man’s and his brain development was like a 12-year-old teenager. Usually, a one-year-old baby’s testosterone level is 20 nanogram per deciliter but his were 500-600 ng/dl. Due to which he also started getting facial and body hair.

Dr Rustagi said only one in 100,000 have this condition for toddlers in age group of one year and one in 10,000 for boys aged eight to 10. Precocious puberty is more common in girls aged eight to 10, especially living in urban areas, she said.

“Since the baby was so young, he could hardly understand the changes taking place in his body. He would experience sexual urges. Precocious puberty is traumatic for a child of his age and it makes them violent. His muscle strength increased to a level that even his parents couldn’t control him,” Dr Rustagi said.

The kid was put on hormone therapy and within five months his hormonal developments and genital size decreased. He is given a dose once a month that blocks the effects of hormones. The treatment will continue till he is mentally stable enough to understand and accept the changes in his body.

“If kids with this disorder are not treated, they stop growing after a few years and remain just 3-4.5 ft tall,” Rustagi said.

Since it’s not a life threatening medical condition, the insurance company is not covering Akash’s medical bills.

Ah, was wondering what the downsides were.

...that sounds horrifying, that'd fuck with you so much throughout life.

Hopefully his family gives lots of support.

This shit is infuriating. This situation is when you need an adaptive definition of 'life threatening.' Will they at least cover his psychological-related bills later in life? Fucking insurance company scum.

Sucks the insurance doesn't cover it because it's not life threatening.

Kid could end up being 3 feet tall.

I believe there are case studies of young girls who have the same symptoms and are raped at a young age and become pregnant despite being children themselves. It's pretty fucked up all around.

Friend of mine had this.

They basically have to dope your body to stop producing testosterone, then brute force puberty again through testosterone doping when your 10-12.

It's a slog, and really, really expensive.

The beauty and mysteries of our DNA and proper gene expression. Many people take it for granted that they turned out normal. The intricate dance of a developing and aging human is sometimes very difficult to comprehend.

For those curious about the first bolded sentence, a lakh is 100,000

So a 1/100,000 chance.

With a population around 1.4 billion I wonder how close to the 1,400 that would be statistically predicted actually have occurred? First I have ever heard of this. Poor guy

Ah, was wondering what the downsides were.

I wonder if continued growth hormone would negate this effect or if there is a limit to how long he can grow (growth plates closing).

I'm interested in the 12 year old brain development comment. In a way this would be a way for our species to bypass our long growth rate to biological maturity. At the same time maybe we need that time to process things properly.

If he has the brain development of a 12 year old, does that mean he can actually think with the same capacity that a 12 year old can (without, presumably, language since he wouldn't have been taught how to speak yet)? So he can think, theoretically, on the same level as a 7th grader?

While being stuck in a toddler's body?

Must be terrifying.

Google the article and you'll find pictures of the boy. I can't believe he's 1 - or even 2

Are you sure there's images of the boy or are you being hoodwinked by photoshops?

Also I swear this is yet another spurious story that you see in the sun newspaper that's never corroborated.

Article said that image with the beard baby was for 'representational purposes'

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a few hairs scattered across his lower face or something in reality

Humans need to gestate and gather emotional growth as well as capactity and mental growth.

It's why the article lists him as absurdly violent. He never learned impulse control. He quite literally is an infant with the mind of an adult and, as a father, jesus that's terrifying to me.

I don't know, but I would think his brain would be 'running' at the same speed, but without the faculty of language. I would imagine without having learned a language yet, that the quality of the thoughts he's having wouldn't be comparable to a 12 year old who has been speaking language for years. Very interesting, and again, very sad.

I wonder if that would affect his ability to learn language? Older people seem to have a much harder time learning languages, i always assumed it was cause they lacked the structure of an infant's brain.

Yeah, his mind is that of a functional adult, but unable to comprehend himself, his surroundings, he hasn't had the time that an infant needs to conceptualize and understand while his brain develops, his brain has hyper developed in terms of it's processing ability, but he lacks... basically everything that would make him functional.

It must be absolutely terrifying.
