Brave × Junction’s Switch Release Blocked in the West Over Character Design Concerns; JP Version Has English Text Option

Blackjack RPG Brave × Junction has been denied release on Nintendo Switch in North America and Europe. Publisher Rideon confirmed the block and said the team is still investigating the cause. The game is already out on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. It's also available on the Japanese Switch eShop, where players can switch between English and Japanese in the settings.

Rideon first flagged issues back in October, stating that the western Switch release was uncertain. In this latest update, the company said distribution has officially been prohibited. Based on Rideon's own statements and parody illustrations posted to the official site, the ban appears tied to content concerns over characters being perceived as children in sexualized situations, despite the game having a CERO B rating in Japan.

The controversy revolves around character designs, specifically defeat screen illustrations that feature revealing outfits. Rideon shared a satirical image where the Magician is informed her design was considered "legally problematic." Her reaction, along with a background poster saying "We won't stand for sexual content involving children", clearly shows the team's frustration with the ruling.

There's no word yet on whether the company plans to modify the content for a potential Western Switch release. Until then, English-speaking players can grab the game on Steam, PlayStation platforms, or through the Japanese Switch version with full English support.

These are the funny illustrations that Rideon shared based on the topic. It goes like this:

About the North American/European Switch version

With that baby face, bikini armor is impossible.

Magician: I never thought Fighter would be judged as sexual content of children, but I wonder what the situation will be like after that?

Kingdom Soldier: Magicians.... were.... also determined to be "legally problematic sexual content involving children"!

Guilty!

What kind of decision is that?

Magician: Huh!? I-I-I'm...... I'm a child?

Sometimes it's not the art, it's the person looking at the art and where their mind goes .. Maybe we are immune to such things, because my mind just considered it JRPG design and nothing offensive. Too soft.

Are you a member of the Borg Collective?

The one who responsible for this:
For reference, let's look at this picture of the sorceress. Other than her proportions, there are a couple of details worth noting. One is that her shirt is trying to escape from her chest. She also has a very childish face that resembles lolicon imagery. I don't think either of those features is beautiful or worth lauding in any way.

See, I don't think the sorceress's design is problematic because of her large breasts. What's problematic is that the character is explicitly designed to draw our eyes to her large breasts. They're exposed; they're jiggling; they're disproportionate. They're immediately striking. They're part of a lolicon fantasy, drawn to appeal to people who are interested in lolicon fantasies (and people who are interested in large breasts).

She's drawn with large breasts to attract our eyes.... thus it appeals to lolicons...?

Just because Japan is degenerate when it comes to the graphic portrayal of characters resembling minors doesn't mean other countries have to be as well. Soy boy likes wanking to his animu girls, that's his problem.

At least they don't rape real life women or little girls, like the nationals of the countries that complain about this.

Dead or Alive Xtreme games have not released in the west or in the Xbox platform for almost a decade because they are considered problematic.

So tired of this shit. Now I'm gonna buy it just to piss these people off, and I never heard of it before. Stop telling me what I can and can not buy, especially when the games already have gotten the approval from the ESRB in a lot of cases.

I am glad I was able to get Asian imports, but I am still am flabbergasted about them blocking the Hyperdimension Neptunia re;birth games, all of which were rated T by the ESRB in prior releases.

At least in the West we have a lot less sales, sexual assaults, day to day misogynistic conduct, etc… thanks to soft banning this kind of problematic content…

Right?

Right?

(You are correct, but it all seems pointless prohibitionist crap).

If the game gets an appropriate ESRB rating (AKA, Not AO) then they should have no grounds to block it from the platform when it already is available on the same platform in another country.

Given nintendos abhorrent lack of quality and standards in the eshop, things like this getting blocked is just downright absurd.

Will you get arrested if you play this too?
Only if you live in Norway. I'm letting the authorities know.

I know where you're posting from (Norway) because I have backtraced it. Your post has been reported to the cyber police and state police. The consequences will never be the same

When was the last time a game like this was allowed on PlayStation and not on Switch?
I swear, half of the weekly eShop releases is smut.
Not that I'm interested in the game, just genuinely puzzled by this decision. What has changed?
