Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter - Switch 2 version announced, demo available now, opening movie released

I always wanted get in to it but it just too many games, I admire the fact it's continues story but it hard to know where to start. It basically how some people feel trying jump to One Piece.
Very good analogy because I'm one of those people thst want to get into One Piece but am way too intimidated

Played a bit of PC demo. Runs pretty smoothly for PS4 graphics (😉) but kind of heavy on a 7800x3d/5080.

It was struggling a little on 4K/60.

Without the context of nothing anything about your rig, it's sort of impossible to know if that's a bad thing or not. PC could mean many many different things.

I got big Skies of Arcadia vibes from the trailer. Which reminded me that Skies of Arcadia exists. Probably one of my all time favorite JRPGs.

I'm not gonna finish the demo, instead I will wait for the full release.

I'm completely sold on this game, characters are super fun and charming with REALLY good combat that combines turn based and action combat.

Ehhh I noped out of this one after 15 minutes of the demo. Not for me.
Trails games aren't for everyone. There's (typically) a LOT of talking and exposition, which initially can turn ppl off...but if you stick with, it the combat and world building/Lore usually makes up for it.

It's basically the MCU equivalent of JRPGS (in the good sense)

Did you play the original?
I played 30-something hours back in the day, but didn't finish it.

I don't think I can do this kind of game anymore. The tired shounen anime tropes, the protagonist's high-pitched voice, the VA with unnatural pauses after every line, conversations that go on for like 2-3x as long as they need to.

I am no longer worthy of my title.

I feel the same way, but I'll end up plowing through this one because of its legacy.

I'm a fool. 🤷‍♂️

Yes I rushed through this game because I didn't get what they were trying to do. I was just trying to get to the good part. After SC I got it and took my time with the rest of the games. Now I normally just go for plat to get the full experince.

I did state CPU/GPU: "7800x3d/5080". Throw in 870e Asus motherboard, DDR5 6000 (expo enabled), PCIE4 SSDs (Samsung, WD). So decent box, and I run Cyberpunk better, lol.

I am no longer worthy of my title.

If that's the case then I should just wait for the full version.

I'm already very sold on the game. I heard Falcom games are not very high budget but to me this game looks gorgeous and very good character animation and it runs silky smooth.
The budget for their Trails games has been going up since they started becoming popular in the West. It started looking decent with the Cold Steel series. The Daybreak series looked even better and now the Trails remake looks even better than that.

Yeah and really liking the overall aesthetics, this remake is gonna be best way for me to finally get in to the series.

I'm thinking of getting this.
I have never even touched the series. I just know it has a lot of games.

Can anyone briefly educate me?
How many games are there?
Is the series done?
Will they remake all of the games?
Are they self contained stories?
Is it worth getting into?

1. Can anyone briefly educate me?
2. How many games are there?
3. Is the series done?
4. Will they remake all of the games?
5. Are they self contained stories?

1. Copied from my last OT: the Trails series is a long-running franchise of role-playing video games developed by Nihon Falcom. These games are known for their deep storytelling, world-building, complex characters, and strategic turn-based combat systems. The Trails series is divided into arcs, each focusing on different regions, characters, and storylines, but they are all set in the same shared world.
2. There are 12 games released in the West currently. The next one, Trails Beyond the Horizon is going to come out early next year.
3. No, but Kondo, the president of Falcom and series director, said we are in the final part of the series. But don't believe his lies.
4. We don't know, but it's highly likely that they are going to remake the sequel of Sky FC at least (Trails in the Sky SC).
5. Each arc is self-contained, while the overall story is interconnected. Events from past games are always referenced, and characters from past games can have massive impact on the story. There are a few good starting points, but the optimal starting point is Trails in the Sky FC.
6. Hell yeah, Trails is a unicum when it comes to videogames. No other series has come close to this level of interconnectedness, and that is actually the main appeal of the series.

  • There are 13 games in the series, this is a remake of the first one
  • The series isn't finished, the next game is rumored to close out the current arc (but unknown if that will actually be the end of the series)
  • The first 5 games in the series were originally released on PSP. Two of those five games are already on modern consoles (Trails From Zero, Trails to Azure). The three games not available on modern consoles are the three games from this story arc. No news on whether the other two will be remade, but it's looking extremely likely that the second game will at least.
  • The story is split into "arcs", that are kind of complete stories. I say kind of, because characters and settings from previous arcs usually play a big part in these. Most people recommend starting at the beginning (which is now this new remake).
  • I'd say it's worth getting into if you're a fan of long / dialog heavy JRPGs. The stories and characters are fantastic, and the world feels incredibly lived in. The deeper into the series you get, the more payoff you get.

I've read numerous times that this particular game gets going after 10 hours. If it doesn't bother you, you could always skip cutscenes here and there just to get going. It's funny how in FFIV Cecil gets stripped of his duties and basically marked as a traitor the moment he asks the king what his intentions are with the crystals. So a jump start to getting on with a game is a hit and miss anymore. You have to see it to the core gameplay before dismissing it completely. I even quit the demo to play more Xanadu NeXT just cause I wanted to start playing right away.

I just hope GungHo's localization lives up to NIS's Trails localizations. I just finished Daybreak and the dialogue actually managed to make me laugh a few times. I mean I wasn't used to seeing this kind of Dialogue in current year JRPG localizations. I was surprised at how risqué it was at times.

And the thing is, the Trails games all take place in the same world around the same time (The big guy in the first ss is Zin, he's a character that joins your party in Trails in the Sky) so if there's a drastic change to the feel of the localization, it'll be a bit weird. I'm a little worried cause they censored the slap in the latest trailer (which isn't censored in the Japanese version of the trailer). That trailer is cool though since they tried to recreate the trailer of the PSP version of the game.

It's flawless on PS5 Pro. The IQ is crisp, the menus and battle system are snappy and new enviroments are so spot-on!

I'm fairly new to the series (just finished original 3 games 2 days ago) but I already can see love and quality behind the remake that is on par with FF7R project.

I can finally get my wife into the series with this remake too, she's not a huge fan of 2.5D chibi and reading but really in love with remake so far.

about that.

it sucks i was looking forward to this oh well.
I've got let's play to the first three games so I'll just start with zero I'm done with those.

Wow, is the censorship really this bad?

I mean .. did y'all check out the demo ?

Schera's intro is a 10 second extreme close-up of her boobs. Changing a few lines for the flow of a conversation doesn't amount to much if all the visual fanservice is left untouched. Or, since this is a remake, probably better to say that they're creating fan-service for people.

This one's a small-fry case of 'censorship' afaik.

AI replacing these mentally ill degenerates can't come soon enough. Even if the AI is just as bad, at least those idiots will be out of a job.

no, changing dialogue is very important

I'm still getting the game but I'm playing through the original first now since that has a really good localization

there's no good reason to go and mess it up

I had a similar experience in the demo and played a couple hours. I don't think it's a full-on anime thing though because there are still plenty of anime-style games that I enjoy (such as Dragon Quest and Ace Attorney).

I think it's just the writing in this particular game, to be honest. Little unnatural things like Estelle not noticing the giant body her dad is carrying when he arrives, or drop-kicking (!) an injured stranger's head for some innocuous comment. Or when Joshua outright states Estelle's character traits as if he's reading off her biography, instead of showing us them. The writing just isn't very good like in some RPGs; there are too many things that break my immersion and keep me from getting lost in the story and characters. And yeah, one of the big downsides of VA is the long pauses which makes the circular conversations harder to sit through.

Not trying to dunk on the game as your mileage may vary with stuff like this. To be fair I like the character designs, the music, and the colorful visuals. But I'm just not into this style of storytelling.

Yeah for sure. Not saying all anime/JRPGs are like this but it's definitely an anime/JRPG thing.

Honestly all of those things are awful but it's the long pauses that bother me the most. FFS they go through all the trouble of voicing the dialog, but they don't make it flow like an actual conversation and they make it so tedious to listen to. I'd rather just read text most of the time.
