The game released two years ago today. Excellent RPG, underrated mainly due to the "twist" of the first game.
You can still find the collector edition for cheaper than at release, since they (Nintendo/S-E) hoped for it to replicate the first game's success (million seller in 2014).

The latest mobile Bravely game recently came out in Japan, and most of the 3DS game team is now working on Project Octopath Traveler for Switch (official facebook page for the team).

That's not too bad. Definetly better than, say, Tokyo Mirage Sessions WW or LBX in the west. And series have gone on with way less numbers than that. Hopefully a Switch installment is on the works.

Seems the West picked up the slack from the JP release. They should be happy, Bravely Second had tons of reused assets no?

Congrats to them! I tried playing the first one, but I couldn't finish it up because of all the grinding. I'm sure these are great jrpgs but I guess it's not my cup of tea. How's the pacing in the Bravely Second? Is it like Bravely Default? I might take another stab at it if you convince me.

I have a feeling that is Octopath traveler. The art style is similar.

Played it last year and thought it was one of the best JRPGs I've played in years. There is something so satisfying about leveling up multiple jobs on a single character to make your party feel like unstoppable gods.

Even with that, I still thought there were some challenging bosses. Great game.

Good, because it's one of the strongest RPGs ever. A true spiritual successor to FF5 in a way that the original wasn't.

The fact that it's generally viewed as "worse" than Bravely Default is something i'll never live down.

Still haven't bought this one yet. I felt the first one outstayed its welcome even though I really did enjoy it. Really should get this one someday.

Hopefully that met expectations. Regardless I look forward to Octopath Traveler on Switch and hope it's successful so we continue getting these types of games.

I've been interested in giving Bravely Default and this a shot for a while, but there always seems to be another game that's higher up on my priorities. I adore FF5, though, and I've heard that the job system in these games is similar to that. Would people recommend I skip Default and jump straight to Second, or is story context important?

Haven't played it since I skipped the US version due to the stuff that got cut. Hopefully I'll be able to grab a Japanese copy fairly soon. I didn't really like the first but I'm still willing to give the team a second chance.

Less decline in the west than Japan then but a solid result. I wish it could have got to a mil like the original.

Absolutely. Both Bravely Default and Bravely Second used a revamped version of the FF5 job system, but Bravely Second is the better game by a country mile. It immediately spoils the events of the first game, but I still don't think it's worth playing BD1 and getting burnt out on the series. BS does a great job of cluing you in on the events of the previous game.

I'm one of those that soured on the first game after the asinine twist so I never gave it a chance. I still don't know what they were thinking with that.

Why? How many 3DS RPGs did get HD ports?
Can't really give any good reason apart from that it feels weird not to. I figured it'd be a thing due to the games being a return to classic FF style and its graphic style most likely looking well in higher resolution.

Congrats, even though the series was hamstrung by S-Enix.

The games will always hold a special place in my heart for coming at a time when I all but forgotten JRPGs.

I dunno what it is, but for Bravely Default and SMTIV, I didn't bother to pick up the sequels even though I really enjoyed the original games. I think perhaps they just seem too similar to their predecessors.

That's kind of a shame though, because both sequels are significantly better. SMT4A especially.

700k is pretty decent considering the bullshit they pulled with Bravely Default's ending. I do want a Bravely Third, but only if it takes place in a different universe.

I remember that Square said the sequel will decide whether the franchise will be expanded.

With these numbers, I can definetly imagine that they are going to be doing a third entry for Switch after Project Octopath.

It's likely not, given they're working on Project Octopath Travellers, unless that's a stealth Bravely Third.

Bravely Second does end on a sequel hook, though given all the dimension and time hopping through both games, it would be easy to put them in a different universe while doing whatever that hook was.

Good for SE I guess. I have this on my backlog, but honestly the backtracking in the first one has left me with zero desire to play another Bravely game :/

Absolutely loved the first game but never bought the second one, dunno why I'm just not feeling it.
Super hyped for Octopath Traveler though.

I wasn't able to stomach the first game past the big dress-up idol sequence with the old pervy man or whatever. I think my tastes and this series' writing just don't mesh. Maybe 15 years ago it'd be fine. D:

That said, I have nothing but respect for the fans. 1 million for the first game. Another 700k for the sequel. Not bad, not bad. I can tell these are solid games at their core, and I'm happy to watch them succeed.

I view both games as a whole. Second feels like v2.0 since it reuses a lot of assets.

They're on my #5 JRPG of all time. They're great!

No, it's not good when a sequel sells less.

3DS was long in the tooth at this point and people were getting tired of its poor ergonomics and atrocious graphics I imagine. Wasn't the game better than the first?
Personally I liked the first better. So much of Bravely Second was recycled from Default. The writing was somehow even more braindead stupid than the first game. And I was already tired of all the asterix holders' dumb antics, the last thing I wanted was to revisit all those characters in zany new circumstances.

The job system was pretty great, but by the second half of the game once I had unlocked the abilities I wanted, I just felt no desire to play any further.

Great numbers, well deserved!

I think people forget just how hard it is to sell 1 million copies, 1m shouldn't be held as the bar.

Got the sequel was rather disappointed in the end despite recognizing that Second is probably better in regards to its gameplay which is definitely a strong reason that makes me like these games.

That said having another game of Tiz, Edea made me really sick of them. Bravely characters just don't have enough meat to them to carry me through 2 games.
And the music was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge disappointment. I don't even remember a single track of Second.

Doesn't mean I hated Bravely Second more like it was just ok after absolutely falling in love with the first one and despite the infamous second half of Default I respect what the tried to do and it a way because of it that game has stuck with me even to today.

This explains why the series got gutted after this and they're moving on with a new IP instead. Not really worth keeping around when you have a game which got really good word of mouth and sold over a million, and then the sequel comes out and no one cares. I'm part of a problem, after finishing BD I had no interest in the next game. Lol.

Nah. The goal of any first sequel is to build on the success of the first game and grow demand even more. If it falls short, it's a bad sign for the value of the franchise. That's why the team is now working on a new IP instead. Let's not spin this as a "good" result. It's not.

I think the real problem is how Square Enix cheaped out on the sequel.

I'm expecting this to be a continuing pattern as well, since Square Enix tends to really struggle to make sequels people care about anymore.

Deus Ex just died, almost all their new IPs have failed in the past 15 years, and even Tomb Raider looks like it's heading in a bad direction. Is anyone expecting Eidos Montreal's Tomb Raider game to be exciting, or even the next one from Crystal Dynamics?

I guess Nier went up, but the first one was so low budget that they were actually willing to spend notably more on the sequel and make something that looked like an impressive improvement.

I mean, "
bring Tiz back to life,
go back through the same dungeons and revisit all the asterix holders again" probably wasn't at the top of most people's list for what they wanted in a sequel.
