Breaking: Activision Planning 'Call of Duty Cinematic Universe'

Every studio and producer these days is chasing a “Star Wars” or Marvel sized franchise, where they can keep pumping out movies (and licensed products) forever, to guarantee a steady revenue stream until the end of time. With that in mind, it’s not a big surprise that there’s over a dozen “Transformers” movies in development, and it’s not a big shock that the video game “Call Of Duty” has mega blockbuster aspirations as well.

Speaking with The Guardian, Activision Blizzard Studios co-presidents of Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk outlined their ambitious plans for the shoot ’em up property.

“We have plotted out many years…We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going. There’ll be a film that feels more like ‘Black Ops,’ the story behind the story. The ‘Modern Warfare‘ series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid, where you are looking at private, covert operations, while a public operation is going on,” Sher said.

“It’s going to have the same sort of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope … a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie,” Dyk added.

This have been in the works for a while now, and to be fair, the series is hugely popular, with lots of source material, and has attracted big Hollywood names in the past. Trent Reznor composed the theme song for “Call Of Duty: Black Ops II,” Kevin Spacey and Kit Harington have lent their voices, Guy Ritchie and James Mangold have both directed ads for the game, while Michael B. Jordan, Cara Delevigne and football player Marshawn Lynch starred in a promo for “Call Of Duty: Black Ops III.”

Of course, we call know that the video game movie genre is littered with bad films and missed opportunities (see last summer’s “Warcraft,” which is an Activision title, but they had no involvement with the film), so it’s a big hill to climb. However, both Sher and Dyk have serious credentials. She has Quentin Tarantino‘s “Pulp Fiction,” “Django Unchained” and “The Hateful Eight” among other pictures on her CV, while he worked at Disney during the years they acquired both Lucasfilm and Marvel. So they have lots of experience in the Hollywood game, which could help them succeed where others have failed. [via JoBlo]
This sounds better than Anime adaptations

How about making a good game instead, huh, Activision? You've been slipping, Call of Duty 2 was a long time ago.

This strikes me as the Angry Birds movie. It's technically not too late to make money, but it's far too late to start a billion-dollar film franchise.

I'm already looking forward to the marathon screenings of these films and Power Rangers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6!

So I guess it'll fit in with most modern movies: Set pieces chained together with mediocrity and little substance (without the joy of actually playing the experience).

They literally announced this a year ago.

This is more, "Activision reminds us they're making a ton of Call of Duty movies".

Yup.

The odd thing is they have said before that they intend to produce and finance these themselves and just get a studio to distribute the films for them, as Marvel did with Paramount before the Disney buy out.

Which begs the question, 'if money is no object, why are they still only talking about these films and not making them'?

Hmmmm.

Don't forget Transformers 6-19.

Ahhh, yes.

Dat Rodimus Prime trilogy.

Hunting for that Paramount or Universal pick up.

Can't wait for the "military metal" soundtrack featuring Drowning Pool, Staind, and Five Finger Death Punch

This obsession with Cinematic Universes is annoying. There were some Marvel films I was interested in like Civil War, but I ended up not seeing them because I always feel like I need to see 10 other movies first to understand what's going on. And they're not easily available to watch on Netflix (in Finland at least). And then I don't have the time to find and watch all of it.

Call of Duty in video game format works, because part of the appeal is how the multiplayer resets for everyone when a new game is out, everyone starts at level 1. You have a chance to be the best!

Hunting for that Paramount or Universal pick up.

Absolutely. It could be a low cost way to give Paramount some clout before Jim G can get that slate of Nickelodeon reboots going.

Another way Activision could go is selling the film worldwide themselves and then using Lionsgate as a distributor for hire, like Amazon does, in the US.

As long as you're aware that eventually Slayven is going to have a big colorful glove, then you can watch them in any order. Including watching sequels out of order.

And COD could be Jason Bourne - just make an awesome action movie and people will watch. Almost nobody had read the books except your grade school principal and the old guy who's always at Starbucks in the morning.

So we're straight up calling any film franchise a "cinematic universe" now?
Franchise: A movie, a videogame, a TV show and a few collectibles or toys.
Cinematic universe: Three or four movies, half a dozen games, two or three TV shows, a few books and a lot of collections.

CUs are basically overgrown franchises.

Just like with the WoW movie, this is amazing timing and it totally makes sense to do this during the lowest point in the franchise's history. I can't wait for that Guitar Hero movie next.
