BTTP: World In Conflict

One of the best RTS games this gen. It did a great job of mixing story, interesting objectives, good graphics, in a solid single player campaign. I don't think the SP can be praised enough for doing a taking a ridiculous scenario and making it seem plausible (unlike Homefront). It's a game I can replay numerous times and not get bored. It's a shame Soviet Assault got delayed for so long and no proper sequel is being worked on.

I feel like this game didn't get all the praise it deserved. What an awesome game! Loved the campaing, it actually had decent story that kept me going and baseless, tactical gameplay in a realistic setting really hit home for me.
Multiplayer was really good also. I loved the whole setup: Co-op versus mp where multiple players took a role in a same army(infartry, armor, air, support) and played against other team in i 8vs8(?) scenarios. Good stuff, alot of explosions :P

Still the best graphics in any rts game, too bad those guys are now working on some random shit for ubisoft :(

I've always wondered why the Massive RTT games never got the online traction that something like the Blizzard games did. They're just as fun - moreso, in my opinion - and offer a fast and frenetic strategic experience that would, possibly, make action fans sit up and take note.

Any thoughts?

Something like World in Conflict was very heavily team based, if you just went in solo then games were pretty unorganised and would usually result in a massive stalemate or one side destroying the other. Most other RTS games could had good 1v1 modes which probably helped them a lot

Yep this game ranks high on my best of PC list. Made sure to nab the Collectors Edition when it came out. It was super depressing when Ubisoft bought them. Surprised Ubisoft even let them release the soviet expansion pack.

Game was awesome. Loved the mission early on where you have to hold out til the Missouri arrives and you get to bombard the fuck out of the Russians

Probably the ONLY work of fiction where an North American Invasion actually makes sense.

Man, you're sore over that Homefront game :D

The way I see it - and not to derail the thread - is that it isn't a question of actors (you sound like you'd rest easy if it were simply a case of changing GKR to Russia), just the notion of a beleaguered state throwing the engine into overdrive and coming a long way in a very short space of time. The woeful Weimar republic to the Third Reich, fuelled by an energised belligerence, is an easy comparison. I can't hate on geopolitical popcorn crises, we rarely get them with such detail - however seemingly misguided or laughable. I just want to shoot it out over the white picket fences. A pleasant change, in a grotesque way.

Anyway, back on topic, cheers to Sohois for the rundown. What's the state of the online scene for WiC these days? Thinking of getting into it. Played a heap of GC/GC2 back in the day and found it terrific (anyone remember loading up your carryall with a radar to provide some sort of ad-hoc sci-fi AWACS?! Good times!).

Has the best RTS story. Yes SC2 can suck it. It helps that the objectives and campaign structure are amazing as well.

And Baldwin. The man is the fist to the game's iron gauntlet.

Baldwin was an excellent choice to narrate the game. The games story was really solid and it made even guys like Bannon turn out to be pretty awesome at the end of it all. It helped alot having some key writers involved in military stories helped out

Best main menu music I've ever heard.

Regarding Sawyer

It was removed from the final version (was only in the closed beta) however the devs added it to the game website with instructions on how to replace it. Much love!

Yeah, especially (and SA is a bit more clear about it) since the Russians only make limited gains. The only issue I have is Fort Teller. I guess in the WiC world they Russians thing we have a full functional SDI. Oh the NYC mission while great is a bit odd that the Soviets would launch a gas attack on NYC. I guess someone really liked the novelization of Escape From New York. Still minor issues.

Worth mentioning you can get the full soundtrack for Soviet Assault for free and legit on Massgate. GREAT score if you like synth.

They made the Ground Control series before it. Should check it out. Ground Control 1 is free at Fileplanet.

Cool, I will, thanks.

Can't wait to start soviet assault when I clear my backlog. Such a fresh take on the rts genre and those graphics... the amount of shit blowing around you in the later levels was overwhelming.

The one with a headset and a piece of the berlin wall? I knew from that moment that the game meant business lol

I never got into the multiplayer much, but it was a cool idea. Loved the single-player though.

I was amazed when Ubisoft cancelled the console release of this game in favor of promoting EndWar. World in Conflict is practically perfect for consoles due to how it's controlled, whereas EndWar was a dumbed-down version with similar mechanics and the awfully annoying voice control that no one actually wants to do.

Don't be hard on Endwar. It's no World in Conflict, but it combined some great things...persistent online territory struggle, persistent veteran units and upgrades, a terrific control scheme for an RTT on console. I was really sad when Ubi shelved the sequel.
