Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

I haven't played enough of Lost Winds to give it a verdict. It's a good game, I can tell that, but once I beat it, I'll know if it is amazing.

The point of this post? Defend Your Castle is amazing. It's so much fun, and the sense of humor is great. I can't wait until I get my friends around so we can play some four player games.

Agreed. Now pick up Pop and give it oh, about 15 minutes, to hook you good.

Just beat Lost Winds. The game is quite good, even if it's short and a bit on the slow side. I found it to be really relaxing and enjoyable. I just hope the next chapter kicks things up a notch.

ok, quick posts for the games I picked up.

Pop... not since Lumines have I played a puzzle game where I am just chilled while playing. I could see me playing Chill mode for hours just relaxing and zoning out. Very addicting.

Lost Winds... fun for what it is.. only played for like half an hour. Believe it or not it's play time might actually be what draws me back. a game I can beat with 3-4 hours investment? Fun but grabbed me the least out of all titles purchased (except for production values which are probably only second to FFCC).

Defend You Castle... pretty god damn crazy. I stuck with it until about level 18 or so and like all of the rounds were click.. click... clickclick... click.. and then 18 was like clickclickclickcccccccclickclickclickcccclickclickclickccccccccccccccclickclickclick and I died.. wtf? Will give it another go but that was just kind of fucked up.

and of course FFCC... Yes I bought all the content, yes I whored it out... BUT, it should be mentioned that the concept of this game is targeted directly at gamers such as myself. A relaxing sim-management game that you can min/max til your hearts content. Overall I easily (as in effortlessly) put the most time into this one. Around 2 hours or so tonight. And I look on going back.

Overall impressions of WiiWare based on the four titles I picked up? Very well done, a great value, and right up there with PSN and XBLA as the best console gaming has to offer. Truth be told between all three services I hope we see MORE of an emphasis put on download gaming. Of course it sucks that PSn/XBLA titles don't lend themselves to porting to WiiWare... but the market is big enough that I think it can support both "systems".

Big grats to Nintendo on the successful launch and the excellent 2/3) launch titles.. yeah, Blackjack and TV Game Show might actually be great, but standing next to these four there is a definite difference in quality.

edit - oh yeah... I was not really annoyed in clearing space off for Nintendo Channel as I posted earlier... BUT, I had to remove EVERY N64 and TurboCD game to have room for these four.... ummm.... ok, I'm on board now. Nintendo, release either mass storage or at the very least let us load games directly off of SD..... 4 WiiWare games and all I have left to show is maybe half a dozen VC (re NES, Gen and TG16) games to boot...

What should I buy that will get the most bang for my buck?
two of the other good ones (IMHO) are puzzle games.. and then you have sim management. all are good IMHO but can be easily summed up like that. Otherwise wait for next week (Dr. Mario Rx? World of Goo? Critter Roundup?) or pickup some VC titles you might be behind on.

So is this the official wiiware thread to post ANYTHING WiiWare?

I remember someone saying it was just for pics...aw well.

I'm tempted to get FFCC, but supporting a WiiWare game that intentionally makes me pay a dollar for a freaking costume change is just kind of off-putting.

Uhm, it's not like the game puts a gun to your head and makes you buy the add-ons...

Bah... this isn't fair... now folks are making me want the trivia game!

I suppose I'm eventually going to fall for the hype and get Lost Winds and FF, but I can't get over the $10 and $15 price points... $5 for Defend Your Castle seems nice, though.

Gimme more cheap games, please.

I hope we get some sort of numbers from Nintendo or someone for sales. I want to know how games like LostWinds are doing (besides only seeing that it's #1 as the most downloaded WiiWare game thusfar).

Looking at the trailers on the Nintendo Channel, I noticed that High Voltage made the Blackjack game, so it's their fault that I can't play Gyrostar.

The download content is almost the same price as the game, and it's hardly come out.

Hell, is the content actually being downloaded, or is it simply being unlocked?

so where can this be seen?

it is. it takes extra blocks.

The trivia game is pretty good; surprised me with its presentation, if a little easy with its questions in the time I played it.

Try Pop and Defend Your Castle -- fun, cheap-ish games. Pop definitely justifies its $2 increment over Defend Your Castle. It is just that much meatier. Both are very very fun though.

I wonder when the "Recommended Titles" and consumer feedback portions of the Nintendo Channel will actually start...

I dunno, something about being gay.

Just to prove that this was a holy event, I got a new download screen that I had never seen before: small Mario and Luigi swimming along the screen. Sometimes Mario would go too high and have to swim back down to Luigi. There's no satisfying hitting the final block repeatedly, and they don't touch all of the coins, but it was really cool and surprising nonetheless.

LostWinds for Ten bucks or the castle game for 5...so tough of a choice. Also interested in the game show if anyone picked that up.

I only have 800 points left and I don't know if I should get Pop or Defend your Castle.

This is probably false, but... according to Wikipedia (yeah, I know), next week's games are:

Doctor Mario Online Rx
Everyone's Pokémon Ranch
Gyrostarr
Major League Eating: The Game
Protöthea
Star Soldier R
Toki Tori
World of Goo

I feel like with Gyrostarr and World of Goo in the same week, it would be almost too good to be real.

Obviously bullshit. World of Goo isn't even out on PC, and Nintendo isn't going to release half the games in the backlog at one.

I doubt it. We'll probably just get 1 game a week.

I love downloadable games, but how does one even begin to budget Wii space for these?

I'd get Lost Winds tonight except that I want to see what else is coming.

Nintendo has the most inadequate storage solution in gaming history.

I would kill for the 13 GB free you get in an Xbox 360 20 GB hard drive now, never thought I'd say that.

Damn, good line-up. Dr. Mario, World of Goo, and Toki Tori for sure. A maybe on Major League, Gyrostarr and Star Soldier.

Get Lost Winds, it doesn't take that long (but is quite enjoyable). Then, after you beat it, delete the channel (you probably won't want to play it again right away) and the save data (unless you missed some collectables or just want a record).

Eh, IGN listed those games' release dates this morning.

I'm sure World of Goo is a placeholder, but the rest are all finished or probably so.

And that's not "half the games in the backlog."

Nintendo claims there will be some 100 games available for the service at launch - although they will be staggering their release dates a la Virtual Console

Downloaded LostWinds and Defend Your Castle.

Played LW for an hour and six minutes, or so says my Wii data. I don't have much to say about it, out of fear of getting reamed, but basically I think it's good but not great. Much like Kirby Canvas Curse, it's got solid controls, reasonably innovative gameplay, wonderful music, and charming art direction, but, also much like Kirby Canvas Curse, for whatever reason the overall package isn't really clicking with me despite each individual element being impressive in its own right. Perhaps the pace and the level design are just too laid-back for me.

With that said, it's definitely a unique experience, and I don't regret spending $10. ...Well, let me note that I've put $368 into VC so far; I'm not one of those "I only buy AAA games" types, so "I don't regret spending $10" may or may not mean very much coming from me. :P And I also have my random agendas of supporting more 2D gaming being made in this day and age, along with supporting more downloadable games being made since I eventually want to see an all-digital future. But anyway, yeah, LostWinds is good enough.

Right after that I hit up Defend Your Castle for an hour and twenty-six minutes. I'm not entirely sure what's so addicting about it, but as far as Flash-style games go, this is very nice. I've played at least a couple Flash games that I enjoyed more, certainly (see Nanaca Crash or Mekuri Master), but this fits pretty perfectly with the Wii remote. Hard to describe, but basically it's like a Flash game with light real-time strategy elements tossed in, managing the limited resources you have in terms of adding more recruits to cast spells or shoot arrows or repair your castle walls, using spells strategically in accordance with their recharge time, figuring out when and when not to sacrifice a potential recruit to go out and suicide bomb the enemy, etc. Anyway, even though this was the game that I was on the fence about, I ended up probably getting slightly more enjoyment from it than from LostWinds. I'd recommend it, as far as shallow-but-addictive experiences go.

Still looking ahead to the future, mostly; can't wait for Gyrostarr, Shantae, Family Ping Pong, Protothea, Dr. Mario, World of Goo, Toki Tori, Bomberman, Star Soldier R, and that one bubble wrap game if it ever gets released outside Japan (assuming it turns out well, of course).

Edit: Forgot to say this: If my opinion on either game changes, I'll come back and say so. I don't see that happening for DYC, considering how simplistic it is, but it's very possible that LW can only go up from where I am.

I really hope that release list is true. One game a week would be depressing.

In any case I think the Wiiware launch went well. At first I wasn't too happy with only 6 games, but the quality is there so it doesn't matter. And Lostwinds 2 FTW.

If you liked DYC, you should try your hand at Pop. It's slightly more addictive than DYC; good fun.

That can't be anything other than a misinterpretation of whatever Nintendo actually said, considering that only about half that number of games have even been announced for the service.

I'm really enjoying LostWinds so far. I agree that it has a Knytt vibe, albeit much slower. I'll almost certainly pick up the next chapter when it comes out, but it makes me wish that much more that there would be an actual Knytt game for WiiWare >.>

I think those are just all the games that were previously assumed for May 12th, minus the ones we actually got.

Hopefully they announce the European ones soon. And hopefully Australia doesn't get fucked over like some VC releases.

Also surprised they're doing this on a Monday for the US. VC should be monday, WW Tuesday. So then you've got XBLA Wednesday and PSN Thursday. Meh.

I'll probably get Lost Winds - but now you're saying it's very short? Like, how short?

And they've mentioned that US / PAL are intentionally going a more XBLA style release schedule with one or two releases a week, so each game gets to shine. It's not like everyone will go out and buy Critter Round Up right away.

Yea, Tuesday is the odd day out in Digital Download land we got Virtual Console/Wiiware Monday, Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday, Gametap/PSN Thursday and Steam Friday.

Just played about 15 mins of Lost Winds. So far it's ok. I definitely get why people are getting the Knytt vibe.

I've only bought maybe 5 games total on VC (2 unfortunately are on my friend's Wii so I can't get them) so I haven't spent that much money digitally. And seeing as how I don't have a 360 or PS3, I'm pretty new to this whole DLC thing altogether.

Overall the US launch is much, much stronger the Japanese launch it would seem. Also, yea, do not expect Nintendo to unleash such a deluge next week, I recall reading in one interview that NOA has intentionally holding back games in order to have the regular content thing going, they want to evade the post-launch drought the is currently effecting the Japanese Wiiware service.

Well, they should at least release a few games next week. Hell, I'm okay with it being limited to one game per week after THAT, but Pokémon Ranch, Toki Tori, and Dr. Mario should get releases ASAP.

You're probably right. I'm expecting probably 2-3 WiiWare and 1-2 VC games next week. Hopefully they won't go straight down to 1 of each per week.

Well, Pokemon Ranch can take its time getting here versus Toki Tori and Dr. Mario.

Okay seriously... wtf makes WiiWare so awesome?

I just started (had to clean the fridge, thankfully I had a 2 G SD card, some files transfered so fast but Paper Mario took about 5 minutes :/) downloading and downloaded Defend Your Castle

How can something so simple be so much fun?

I played it for an hour straight and am STILL addicted, I didn't want to stop playing

I know Lost Winds is short, but I am also getting that game, my personal boycott of paid DLC has killed FFCC for me (to my dismay as I was SO excited about that game) but I have to say, if this is the start for WiiWare I can't wait for some future games (do do do... Dr. Mario... do do do >> << >>)

LostWinds is very, very good. I'm only about a half-hour in, but the charm, and natural motion of the game, swooping Toku around, the fact that so much of the world reacts to both light winds and full gust strikes (draw a gust upward across the woman holding the baby in the village), the game is a treat.

Defend Your Castle starts off very slow, but around stage 5 it starts showing off a bit more and picks up. I'm still not sure how I can beat the big bottle cap enemies without archers and having only a few mages. The difficulty really spikes when they're introduced, but I've only given it a single shot so far.

I'm surprised the animated gifs of the Pop trailer on the Nintendo Channel haven't started yet.
