Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

I'm so terribly disappointed that Dr Mario Online Rx isn't a WiiWare launch title.

Bad Nintendo, bad..
My theory on that:

There can only be one "star" game, and Final Fantasy is it for this week (though it's really Lost Winds for me - I don't give a shit about FF at all).

I guess they didn't want Dr. Mario and FF "overshadowing" each other.

They can release Final Fantasy in december for all I care.. I just wanted Dr. Mario.

Wow, I was expecting a lot better. Now we have to see how NOA handles the weekly releases (I'm not confident). I'll be getting Lostwinds for sure, and depending on how reactions are for the others maybe a few more.

Also Nintendo needs to fix their pricing structure because some of these games shouldn't be over $5

The "What is WiiWare?" video on the Nintendo Channel shows a screenshot of it in the shop with the date of 05/12/08, so it probably is a launch title, but there's no official launch list yet.
This still confuses me.

I think I'll be sticking with FF:CC next week. I'll pick up Defend Your Castle and LostWinds at some point, probably when the WiiWare releases slow down. There are enough ready-for-launch titles that I'm sure next week will have at least a few releases.

Hmm no Dr Mario or Pokemon Ranch at launch. It indeed seems like Nintendo wants Final Fantasy and Lost Winds to shine as the examples of WiiWare successes. Lost Winds is priced to high for me though, it looks great and all but too short for 10 euro imo.

I think it's likely next week will see World of Goo and Gyrostarr. The week after that Dr. Mario or Pokemon Ranch and that Ubisoft title.

I can't believe Dr. Mario isn't launch what kind of shit is that, if I had a magazine rack I'd surely be knocking it over as we speak.

See, I don't understand why Nintendo would release a video to the whole North American userbase showing that Dr. Mario will be released at launch, only a week launch itself.

Since it's NoA, they should have thrown a product page for Earthbound 2 in that trailer as well then never have spoken of it again.

Hopefully they announce the European ones soon. And hopefully Australia doesn't get fucked over like some VC releases.

Also surprised they're doing this on a Monday for the US. VC should be monday, WW Tuesday. So then you've got XBLA Wednesday and PSN Thursday. Meh.

I'll probably get Lost Winds - but now you're saying it's very short? Like, how short?

And they've mentioned that US / PAL are intentionally going a more XBLA style release schedule with one or two releases a week, so each game gets to shine. It's not like everyone will go out and buy Critter Round Up right away.

Hey guys! No Toki Tori??

And isn't it supposed to launch with the service??

It was never confirmed as a launch title; several people misinterpreted the press release as doing so, but it just gave a "spring 2008" launch date. It has been rated by the ESRB, so it should be out in the next month.

Anyway, the initial launch lineup is a bit thin (where's Dr. Mario and Gyrostarr?), but the staggered releases shouldn't be a huge problem at this point; it's not as though there's anything close to a VC-size backlog.

IGN:

The company was unwilling to provide us with completely official details regarding gameplay length and price, but it did state that LostWinds would probably take about three hours to complete and would very likely ship for under 1,000 Wii Points, or about $10. Some Wii owners might complain that a three-hour WiiWare game is too short, but we submit that if you'll pay $50 for a 10-hour game, why not $10 for a three-hour one -- especially one as innovative as LostWinds?

my buddy sold me his japanese wii with included Dr. Mario and FFCC......i dislike FFCC due to not understanding the language, but Dr. Mario is by far the best version yet!

Although I'm not too happy about the releases, with Nintendo spreading these out, I have a feeling we'll see a good four games a week (between the VC and WiiWare) that go up on the Shop Channel now. That's a very solid number.

Where the fuck is my Star Soldier R, shitcuntgoddamnit.

Also, be prepared to have either a Wii Ware or a VC update on mondays. Single game in both scenarios.

Here's hoping I'm wrong :'(

While there are a few games that I would have liked to have seen at launch, Nintendo has made this a bit easier on my wallet that I initially planned. I'll probably get LostWinds, Pop, and TV Show King.

The Super Mario Bros. games take less than 3 hours to beat (apiece) in a full run, but I don't see anybody complaining about them. If Lost Winds is just as replayable as those titles, then $10 is a more than fair price. Also, the 3-hour runtime could pertain to just the main story (if there are secrets or sidequests) or the shortest possible path (if there are multiple paths).

Now, if it were FF:CC in this situation, there'd be something to complain about.

You seriously should download Alien Crush dude. You're missing the best pinball game ever made.
hmm. is it better than pinball fantasies/illusions and metroid prime pinball?

Wiiware has been out in Japan for a while so why are no Japanese gamers talking about Wiiware? Do they hate it or something?
you can ask miyamoto about that.

The European WiiWare launch is a Tuesday for some strange reason.

almost sold on Lost Winds, might wait for a review or 2 before I pull the trigger. Defend Your Castle is only $5 so maybe that too.

Anyone know if FF:CC:MLaaK (Fun acronym) is worth the 15 smackers?

I'd have no reservations if it were $10, but I just don't know at $15. Everything I hear says that it's mostly just sending out your fighters to dungeons and then walking around town doing nothing until they come back. Then there's the whole DLC situation.

I discovered that I had 500 points stored away when I went to download the Nintendo Channel, so I'll just be picking up Defend Your Castle since I can't afford any more. :(

Tuff call. I didn't play pinball fantasies but i think it's better than Metroid Pinball.
What's cool with Alien and Devil's Crush is that there's alot going on in the table. Lots of stuff is destroyed, unlocked, tranformed. There's also bonus rooms, sub chambers you're teleported in for special challenges. It really is alot of fun.

Does the new one have more than 1 table? I feel like I wasted money.

As far as i know Alien and Devil Crush are one table games. This game is not awesome because there's alot of table, it's because the only table you have evolves and it's focusing quite alot on bonus rooms with special challenges. You bought Alien Crush? Did you blew the brain to unleash the critters? Did you hit the eggs until you will earn the x7 bonus? Do you complete the bonus rooms? (there's like 4 or 5). Did you blow the cocoons?. There's alot to do to rank points. Great stuff.

When should we expect any sort of reviews for these games?
I don't know how long it will take to get full reviews, but my friends at VC-Reviews.com are launching a sister site WiiWare-World.com soon.

The one table does contain variety and I have done alot of the things you mentioned. I just think multiple alien worlds with different layouts with more music would make it perfect.

I know. That fact just ruined my Monday. I had expected to be getting to play some Dr. Mario goodness tomorrow, but I was wrong.

That video is footage from one possible future. It's like wondering why the TNG movies conflict with the future from All Good Things...

Should launch when the VC games normally do, like 9am PST or whatever.
