Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

Judging from some of the impressions in this thread, all of the launch titles are worthy of a purchase. I know I'm going to download Lost Winds, and I'm interested in Defend Your Castle and FF:CC My Life as King. However, I don't know about the fourth one, TV Show King. Is it a trivia game? If so, it would be great to have on the second Wii I have in the living room. So, any impressions on TV Show King?

LostWinds and My Life as a King are awesome.

MLK starts off really slow, but after the first chapter, it REALLY picks up. I can't believe how much fun I'm having with this one. I actually have adventurers I despise and ones I love. I think I actually might download the other race pack. Oh, and there actually is a decent amount of story.

I only played about a half and hour of LostWinds, but it seemed really amazing. It looked fantastic, and played really solidly. I'm going to finish MLK first and then play LostWinds more.

EDIT: The trivia game is good? You're kidding. It's still $10 though :-\

I might download Defend Your Castle sometime in the future. How often are they releasing WiiWare games?

I agree with the people on Lost Winds: MUST BUY! These guys need to make more. Nice music with beautiful art direction. The controls aren't bad at all. While not perfect I can do multiple jumps with ease now.

FF:CC is simply fantastic. It's really got that whole "one more game day and I swear I'll go back to work" thing going. Gonna buy Lost Winds later.

I downloaded Lost Winds, an hour in and I am finding it to be very enjoyable. Its a sidescrolling platformer/puzzle game. Its not broken into levels or anything, its more like a Metroid like world with many paths to go, many which are blocked off until you gain new abilities. You wont get lost but I wish there was a map cause that way i can keep track of where I have been to find hidden secrets (statues hidden in the world).

The game is easy to control, stick moves the character and the wiimote is basically the wind. Hold A down and make a motion and you will create a gust of wind. You move the character up cliffs, across long jumps or guide him down from a long fall all with the wind. The wiimote works perfect in this game, it's a breeze (pun intended. :P ) to manipulate the character and the game world. It starts off simple, you exploring a cave and soon after a town, complete with NPCs. Soon you start to see all sorts of obstacles around the world and places you can just get to. Puzzles start off simple like water a plant to make it grow so you can catapult higher, or use wind to push fire into a bush blocking your path. Later you will have to guide a boulder to a switch so it can hold it down. The puzzles start building and building up, its still easy but this new ability I have now is really starting to mix things up. There are also enemies, very simple creatures that you can launch into the air and watch them splat on the ground, or guide the boulder onto them, or guide fire to burn them.

Possibly the best aspect of this game is how soothing it is. Its a quiet game, very soft oriental Okami like music plays in the background. The graphics are beautiful, very colorful and stylized. You constantly hear the woosh of the wind as you control it, you will hear it brush through trees and such. I found the game to be very relaxing and enjoyable so far. I heard it may be really short but so far its a great start to Wii Ware.

Any questions?

Thank you for the in-depth impressions. I've seen more of the game in YouTube videos, and I'm impressed how the cursor affects the environment, similar to how the cursor is elegantly used in Super Mario Galaxy.

I've heared there is two-player mode...? How is it...? Not that a two-player component is a deal-breaker, but I'd just like to know about it.

That's EXACTLY how I've felt all day! I'm on Day... 60 now? I can't stop, it's so good!

Can you tell me more about MLK ?
What kind of game it is, what are you exactly doing, impressions, etc

I definitely like the music and art of LostWinds, but I'm still adjusting to multiple jumps. I can never quite get it right and it can get pretty frustrating to fall after you struggle. It doesn't seem like a long game, as some of you have already finished it. What are we looking at? 3-4 hours?

I can tell you, if there is anyone in your household that likes gameshows or trivia, get TV Show King. It is really well put together. $10 is well worth it IMO.

Although really what it makes me crave is a wiiware version of You Don't Know Jack.

People, to anyone on the fence, buy LostWinds. Seriously, $10, it rocks.

I hope someone from Frontier is reading this, congrats for making such a great game, guys. I think I'll e-mail them later.

LostWinds is very good. Originally I was hesitant to pay $10 for it but I'm glad I did, it is excellent. I've played for a little over an hour now and I don't want it to end.

I'm interested int My Life as King as well but I guess I don't really understand how it works and don't want to shell out 15 bucks on something I may not like.

When I started it, I was really disappointed. Basically, the flow of the game is that you send out adventurers to the outside words to collect Elementithe to power your crystal. You are then able to make new buildings.

It's pretty bare bones for the first chapter (I just started Chapter IV). You recruit 5 adventurers, all warrior class, and then you build a couple of houses, a bakery, a weapons shop, and that's about it.

After the second chapter starts, you can start to change the classes for your adventurers. It gets more interesting. You then can build schools of magic, defense shops, item shops, a training station, and you can give money to different attributes of each. Like, say you want to make sure your adventurers have better swords. You give money to researching swords. You also might have to send your adventurers out into the wild to get materials so they can research better swords. There's also a Tavern, where you can make your adventurers go into parties to be stronger.

You get money by building more houses so you can tax your residents. People are happier when they're around a bakery, but this all takes elementithe. The cycle continues.

I know the way I explained it seems like it's not very fun, and it really shouldn't be, but honestly, it's completely worth it. I just don't know why it's as fun as it is.

Downloaded LostWinds and VIP Casino Blackjack.

I'll be getting to LostWinds in a bit. But I've spent about an hour with VCB and so far its pretty enjoyable. Not spectacular mind you, but pretty decent. Been playing local multiplayer with the wife and she seems to really enjoy it. Wish there was online multiplayer, but this will be a blast with my gambling addicted inlaws.

Can't figure out how to split the hand thus far, but there is an achievement for it so I'm sure there is a way.

Thanks for your great impressions. I really feel my willpower breaking down and wanting to buy this now :lol

Like many, I got LostWinds and My Life as a King. I started off with LostWinds, and it's great, and I'm looking forward to getting back to it...

But I can't pull myself away from My Life as a King. I really love this game. I like how much detail there is. All the family relationships and friends, every adventurer having their own money and equipment... How at the end of the day you can see exactly what they all did, down to turn by turn information on all their battles... I'll probably keep playing it all night :P

My Life as a King [is] awesome.

Okay, but is it worth $15 and is the DLC worth it? Price is the only thing holding me back on this one. If it were $10 I would have bought it already.

Also no online for game show and blackjack are disappointing. I was expecting a lot more from High Voltage.

By the way, I just took my first look at a short video presentation for Butterfly Garden (slated for Wiiware, PC, and XBLA), and wow, I must say that this is looking really impressive. Not only visually, but the concept itself is looking and sounding pretty damn cool ! Also, the footage is obviously from a build running on the high end machines, but we can hope that the visuals of the Wiiware version will be at least as polished, with the capacities of the console in mind.

I grabbed Defend Your Castle, TV Show King, and Pop.

So far, Defend Your Castle is awesome, TV Show King is pretty good, and Pop is kind of meh. I was actually expecting those to be flipped around. I thought Pop would be a new Geometry Wars; Addictive, sort of trancey fun. I didn't think too much of TV Show King, but thought it would be fun for my family. I didn't expect much from Defend Your Castle, but I've been pleasantly surprised.

Our launch guide is almost done, btw, just need to do impressions of this.

I made an official thread so hopefully more people will post their impression, but I'd say it's worth $15. I don't plan to try the DLC anytime soon except for the race pack (which I'm still not completely sold on), but I'm having a ton of fun without it. I really wish there were demos so people could see how awesome this game really is.

I also love Lost Winds. Is anybody else getting 2D Metroid vibes from this?

Also, somebody help me decide. 1500 Wii Points. Defend Your Castle plus Blackjack v. FFCC. What should I get?

4 player Defend Your Castle is the best $5 I've ever spent. The epicness of the later levels (OMG PEPSI OGRE ZERG RUSH SPAWN DEMOS NOW) is well worth it. :lol

IGN Pop review:

And though it didn't affect the final score, we have to mention that the game has locked up on our review Wii at the Game Over screen of every single game we played. Expect to re-download the game when the developer patches this slightly buggy title.

After I played a couple games today, my wife took over, and is having this problem. On a whim I'm going to try turning off the game's WFC and WC24 options. Anyone else had the crash/tried this?

Kohler - It's a little silly to say that TV Show King ONLY has 3,000 questions for $10 isn't it? Hell Wits & Wagers has 700 I think. Do you not think you've got your money's worth after 3,000 questions?

Ok now i have a dilemma:

1. Wait to buy two cheap WiiWare games that come out with the remaining 1000 points

or

2. Get Sin & Punishment

No. The "pay to play" is for the DLC; new races, dungeons, and sets of clothes for the king.

The races don't seem to add all that much so far but make for a nice aesthetic for the city. I'm curious about the extra dungeons/buildlings and might cave for them later this week.

Lost Winds is instantly charming. If Wiiware is going to be filled with titles like this then sign me the fuck up.

This is the first time I've turned on my Wii in a long ass time. Hopefully more software like this is to come in the future.

There is too much Lost Winds love here; the others are feeling left out:

1. Pop:
Surprisingly fun and addictive. It is basically a score-attack game which starts slow and gets crazier as you clear levels. It has a good amount of depth to it as well. The essence of the game is to extend your time and to score points. You do this by popping bubbles -- the big bubbles get you more time and the smaller bubbles get you less time. The smaller ones though, get you more points, so there is a very cool balance at this very fundamental level. If you miss a bubble, you lose time (not sure if you lose points as well). Then there is the concept of creating chains; this is done by popping bubbles of the same colour. Every "wave" prefers bubbles of a colour, so you need to keep your eyes open to score well. Finally, there are power-up bubbles. Some of them will explode outwards as a nuke and take out bubbles of similar colour. Others have skulls embedded within and will cost you time. On later levels you have to be careful while setting off nuke chain reactions cause there is a chance that the explosion will take along lots of skulls and bring down your time. There are several such power-ups including bonus multipliers, larger wiimote pointer, and time slow. Oh and the game also unlocks "achivements" for you, and there is a global leaderboard for your scores.

I spent about an hour with it before I got distracted and lost time. Pick this up! I haven't had the crashes people have mentioned here. Supports multiplayer.

2. Defend your castle:
This is an amazing title. Again, I spent about an hour with this, reached the 13th level before calling it a night. Much like Pop, the basic gameplay is of clearing waves of enemies. You do this by literally grabbing them and flinging them in the air with your wiimote. It's very satisfying and hilarious especially with the sounds that they make and the decapitated smiley heads they leave behind as they splash to the ground. Your castle can also get upgrades like the "conversion pit" which is essentially a blue paint bucket inside which you drop your enemies. After a while, this enemy is now converted and can be used by you for various deeds.

Furthermore, your castle's four towers can be upgraded for the following: an archery tower, a mage tower, a masonry tower, and a demolition tower. Each tower can be assigned people that you convert, although you can only convert about 10 at one time. The game thus quickly turns into a frantic race of conversion, defense, attack, bomb runs, spells, and flinging people high into the air. It's really really really fun. Supports multiplayer.

The only negative with this game is that at my current level, I have already upgraded my castle and there doesn't seem to be much remaining to do except fortify, convert enemies and fling people around. Pop on the other hand -- by virtue of its game design, always keeps you on your toes and at least seems like it would be fun for a longer time period.

3. Lost Winds:
Yup, it's really good. But everyone else is talking about it, so I don't need to.

4. TV Show King:
Also very good! This one probably has the best presentation of the lot (haven't player My Life as a King yet). The game gets awesomner due to its integration of Miis -- nothing like seeing your family hanging out with Hitler and Iron Man as part of the audience. The questions come fast and fun; there is a small amount of voice-acting, and the game is structured into quick-play (get one wrong and you are out) and normal play. If you love to watch game-shows or don't (I hate them), but love to be right (I do), this one is to get. This would be a great family game, I imagine. Supports Multiplayer.

To round it all up: Wii Ware had a great launch, IMO. I haven't tried the blackjack game (although it looks fun) 'cause I have never played any card games ever in my life (a littttle exaggeration there). Nor did I try My Life as a King, since I wanted to play the other titles first and wanted to read a bit more on the game before sinking $15+ into it.

I recommend: Lost Winds (duh!), Pop, Defend your castle, and TV Show King.

Has anyone else died randomly for no apparent reason while playing Lost Winds?

Not really, but the game is a tad buggy me thinks -- I had a boulder disappear on me by sinking into a switch. I had to reset the level by walking out of the cave.

Dont ever say that again or we will have problems...

j/j, but seriously, is defend your castle geared towards single player or multiplayer? i want it, but i dont want a multiplayer game thats kinda has single player added as an afterthough...i needs my solo goodness

Feeling just a little bit disappointed after beating Lost Winds and finding out
that it's just half a game, or even just a prologue. I thought the world would be bigger, too.

Still, lots of fun.

I haven't played enough of Lost Winds to give it a verdict. It's a good game, I can tell that, but once I beat it, I'll know if it is amazing.

The point of this post? Defend Your Castle is amazing. It's so much fun, and the sense of humor is great. I can't wait until I get my friends around so we can play some four player games.

I am with you on solo-loving and I haven't played any of these in multi- except to note that they do support multi. Solo fun! The cool bit about Defend your Castle is that it scales on the fly if you add another player, or so I read :D
