Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

Some of you might want to know VC-Reviews has now launched a sister site dealing with WiiWare only: WiiWare World.

Of course, the reviews won't be added as fast as those for VC games since we can't play the games in advance.

Okay then. Regardless, the prices are expensive. I WANT the content, but I shouldn't have to practically rebuy the game to get it.
I am really mixed on the concept of small developers or projects releasing "add-on" content simultaneously with the game.

First, to set the record straight (being I DID buy the DLC), everything says Activated after you buy it except for the dungeon pack which says downloaded. So if you are to take that literally, the costumes and races as well as like one or two dungeons are in the download game and you are just authorizing them. The dungeon pack (that takes 3 blocksand adds 11 dungeons) is an actual download. According to the store after you buy them.

Now back to the conflict.. .on one hand of course I can see what everyone is saying. Content that was not only developed directly with the game but actually released on disc or in the initial download... wth? why do we have to pay extra for that.

HOWEVER, for small projects it sort of makes sense to use "DLC" to further recoup the cost of the project. I mean I'm not saying turn it into a true pay as you play game.. but what square is doing kind of, and I know I'm going to get lynched, makes sense. Is $1 for a single costume outrageous? Fuck yeah! I mean seriously, it is. BUT, it's just a stupid outfit that your character or Chime wears AND it's entirely optional AND it provides no bonuses in the game whatsoever. Bottom line is, the game is FULLY functional without it, and with it the gameplay doesn't change at all. Heck, even the extra dungeons... all they do is upgrade your buildings to make your army tougher. But again it's after you've beat the main portion of the game. The tribe packs the almost literally tell you that they are just skins for your townspeople and adventurers.

I mean if you really want me to be honest with you guys, THIS is the type of DLC I can completely get behind and I think Square really nailed it. You're not missing anything if you don't buy it, and if you do buy it you know in advance that you're just extending your gameplay a little bit or adding graphical flourishes. There is NOTHING forcing people to buy it, but it's still there for those who want to.

I guess I have third points in this thread left to make. First, if you are a sim-fanatic (classic "sim", not Sims) you really should buy the game only. At $15 it is honestly a great value. It seems there are around 20+ dungeons in the regular game and after about 2 hours I've only cleared three of them. The production values are through the roof and as that type of game it's really fun. Also I have to say that the dungeon pack is a great value at almost 50% more dungeons for only $3.

Second, if you are considering purchasing the game but are put off by the price of the DLC, don't buy the DLC. Nothing in there is OMFG MUST HAVE to fret about it's price. Well, IMHO the dungeon pack is a good deal of course, but everything else is WAY optional and mostly just new graphical assets for the same shit in the game.

Third, I am one who HATES the Squenix tax. $40 for TWEWY? $40 for FFIII? I mean seriously, the Squeenix tax is ridiculous. HOWEVER, I really don't think this is an example of that tax. Once you play the game, start realizing there is at least 10-20 hours of gameplay here with gorgeous graphics, a good story, and excellent gameplay, you really start to see how good a deal $15 is.

Anyway, I've said my piece. Enjoy (or don't). I really like the game though, hate DLC usually and hate the squeenix tax, but in this case don't find myself approaching this game differently for some reason.

Your site has the answer to my question from the previous post. That's great.

In case anyone else was wondering, the answer is that Pop is 110 blocks.

So.. I don't know if this is well-known yet. But it seems like they're planning to release WiiWare games every other week - at least in Europe.

This might mean we won't get Dr. Mario Online Rx for two weeks. :(

The text-based adventure reports that describe your party's dungeon crawling are awesome!
I was shocked at how it actually lets you see detail so specific as to how every turn of each adventurer's battles went. It really helps with the impression that they're off having a proper Final Fantasy adventure rather than just disappearing for a while, though.

I'm not as far as you, though; I just got into Chapter 2. A slight disappointment, though, in that the game is SO friendly to the GCN/Classic controller that it doesn't make any use of the pointer at all.

Can I play the ff game with just the remote alone?
Nope, you at least need a nunchuk. It's not exactly a speedy or quick-response game, though, so they probably could've made a remote-only mode without much lost.

has anyone tried Defend Your Castle yet? It sounds like a massive improvement on the flash classic, but worth the points?
I never played the original, so I can't comment on improvements. It does get pretty repetitive pretty quick, but considering I put about two hours straight into just the first difficulty on my first play, though, I think I'll definitely get my money's worth.

I'm just here to say 'Fuck NOA' and 'Fuck whomever decided to let NOA stagger WiiWare releases after seeing their incompetence with VC titles'. I enjoyed Lost Winds quite a bit, but I'm quite miffed that there are games I could be playing now which are being delayed for arbitrary reasons. Assholes.

I played the whole game without a nunchuk. Remote only. Controls were slightly kneecapped because of that, I expect, but as you say it's not a quick response game and I was just fine going remote only through the whole game.

Bigger shocker: Everyone does this! They do it on disc-based games too! Riot in the streets!

Or did you think games just accidentally all get finished right in time for the holiday shopping season every year?

You guys are really quick to condemn Nintendo for doing something that hasn't even been confirmed to be true.

I know, huh. How dare commercial releases be operated on release schedules! The nerve!

Totally. They should just release all the big games like Final Fantasy, Pokemon, and Dr. Mario at the same time. Now THAT would really help those small developers.

Having read all impressions in this thread, it would seem like the overal quality off WiiWare's launch line-up is excellent.

Also great news that Lost Winds will be getting a sequal so soon! :) If it's true that LW was made in only 3 months than it's likely we don't have to wait long for a sequal, especially since they got the engine/gameplay covered and have assets they can possibly re-use.

What are you bitching about? A staggering release schedule is the best solution for consumers (not everyone is a core gamer) and developers a like.

If it's true that they will release games every other week, I have no problem with that as long as there will be around 3 games added each time. I think there are also more games (almost) ready for release that we don't know off yet. Just before US launch a couple of WiiWare games came out of nowhere and were launch (window) titles. That way, the "current batch" of titles get the attention they deserve, and when most of the people are ready for new titles there they are.

The only legitimate complaint for WiiWare is the lack of a mass storage solution and that isn't a WiiWare problem it's a larger problem related o the Wii.

It's really quite interesting though that some people appear to exist for the sole purpose of complaining. And judging from the gaggle of new posters who pop in to make off the wall comments, or old posters with new names doing the same, I can see why!

Haha, I see the error in my thinking. I also never considered the implications of bandwidth requirements that would arise without the staggering method.

However, wrt holiday releases, one would assume that beginning the project with the intended completion date of the holidays or very shortly before would be the optimal method of planning. Do you think they just start these projects willy nilly and then delay their release for the holidays (obviously a few do, but I doubt it is regular practice)?

Is there an ending to My Life as King? From what I can tell, it seems like a game you can continuously play and just keep strengthening your kingdom, but I haven't seen that stated anywhere specific so I'm unsure.

If anyone knows, I'd appreciate hearing about it/more impressions about it!

Stumpokapow finished it, and I don't have the link onhand, but if you check his posts, he posted about the ending.

what up

(I downloaded it ~10 minutes after the games went up and played continuously until I finished it)

PoP, Tv Show King, and Lost Winds

PoP- Fun game... a little hard to distinguish the color of the bubble..(maybe it's my tv??)
Also, there is so much popping going on and that is all you do... very soon your hand
will get very tired...unless your single or have an ugly girlfriend. My point is, there is
a lot of hand action. Replay value is high.

Tv Show KIng- Wife seems to like this game more than I do... It is kinda fun and I can
see myself playing this every now and then. Wish it was more in depth.
The wheel is just ok but would have liked more. Not a bad game though.

Lost Winds- Just played a little bit of this one and by far it is my favorite. Just a breath of
fresh air.

On the fence with Defend your Castle..... wanting to save points for future releases... but it's only 500 points.. hmmmm.......what to do?

I played FFCCMLAAK remote only all the way so far, and I'm not feeling kneecapped at all. Am I missing something? I assumed the remote-only mode was the default control scheme.

Also, did anyone buy that $7 blackjack game? I can't imagine what they put in there that they think makes it worth 7 bucks.

Oh? I didn't notice it listing that as an option; how do the controls work?

The D-pad moves the King (King Slacker of Slacksburg in my case), the A button is select, the B button is back, Plus goes to the overview, and minus summons Chime (as does a shake of the remote).

I need help in Lost Winds. I've just recovered the Slip Stream, and so far, I've noticed two areas sealed off by a a kind of cage. In both locations, there is a boulder nearby, which would suggest that the boulder must be "gusted" into them to break them. I've tried but it hasn't worked. Does anyone know how to destroy them?

Picked up DYC yesterday, about 40 levels in, it gets pretty sadistic.

I grabbed Lost Winds and My Life as a King today. Lost Winds is slow but a good play at the same time, and I'm Digging into Squares offering now, and digging it so far, I noticed they didn't hold the DLC back at all for that one.

Overall a nice launch for WiiWare.

The remote control scheme is gimped in mlaak. Plugging in the nunchuck gives you camera control with the dpad and analog movement. Im not really into nunchuck games so Im focusing on DyC. Simple but fun. The lack of music is the only thing I would hold against it.

picked up 4 games yesterday

FFCC: MLaaK - Not bad at all, pretty addictive. Remote only control sucks. Sleepy music made me sleepy though

LostWinds - To me this is the gem of WiiWare, I'd have paid $30-40 for this. Better than most retail games. Oozes charm.

Defend Your Castle - Not feeling it yet, but I'm only at stage 6. Really like the graphical style, but could have used a bit of music.

Pop - Total underdog but I love it. Gets really hard and it has leaderboards, very XBLAish to me. Gonna try advanced mode and dual wielding today.

There`s still a chance that we might get it on Monday, it`s just that these 2 games in particular have been confirmed.

Hmm, really? I guess it's been pushed back a lot. Browsing the makers' blog now, I don't see a mention of current release plans, but as of December 3 last year they thought the PC version would be ready for release Valentine's Day with the others following shortly.

Wow, Nintendo certainly is being nice to 3rd parties when it comes to WiiWare - for the second straight week they're shining the spotlight on 3rd-party offerings.

Hopefully Dr. Mario will show up soon, though - that's the game I really want. Well, and that Tetris game Hudson is releasing, though I think it's only been announced for Japan so far?

Considering that some developers were confounded at the Wiiware launch list I'd say nothing is certain until Nintendo issues their press release which apparently we aren't getting early anymore because giving info 2 days before a game is released is absurd for the new Nintendo.

UK UPDATE OF LAUNCH WINDOW GAMES

Nintendo UK said:

Preview WiiWare’s first batch of games

From 20th May onwards, a whole host of brand-new, creative games from developers across Europe and the rest of the globe become available through Nintendo’s new download service: WiiWare.

With just a few days to go before the launch of the service, here is some more detailed information about some of the games you’ll find on WiiWare during the service’s launch window.

Dr. Mario & Germ Buster
The all-time puzzle classic returns for the Wii generation, featuring online gameplay and a new Germ Buster mode! Destroy all the viruses trapped in the bottle by dropping and slotting capsules to create lines of matching colours. The more viruses you clear, the faster the capsules drop.

In Dr. Mario, challenge the computer in One Player mode, go head-to-head with a friend in Two Player mode or prove your skills against the world via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. You can also send a demo version of the game to a friend (within your region) using WiiConnect24.

In Germ Buster (based on the relaxation game in More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima), up to four players can use their Wii Remotes to grab, spin and slot capsules as their Miis try to keep the nasty bugs at bay. Who thought that catching germs could be so much fun?

FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: My Life as a King
According to legend, a deserted town now serves as the lifeless reminder of a once powerful kingdom. The young son of an exiled king reaches this land after a long journey, finding only an abandoned castle – and a magic crystal. Though tarnished by years of neglect, the crystal has maintained its luminous glow and bestows upon the boy the power of architek, the ability to manifest memories into reality. With the help of loyal servants and audacious adventurers, the new king dutifully prepares to rebuild his people’s homeland in this new realm.

LostWinds
LostWinds is a fresh, enchanting adventure that lets you wield the awesome powers of Enril the wind spirit - from raging tornados to the gentlest breeze – to guide and protect Toku, a young boy who is the only one who can help you release the curse placed upon the world of Mistralis and its people by evil Balasar.

Mistralis is a stunningly presented, magical land full of wonder and intrigue that bursts to life with your every action and exploration. LostWinds’s novel, playful controls let you use Enril’s elemental powers to jump and glide Toku through Mistralis’s different regions, buffet and smash enemies and solve puzzles on the journey to a dramatic showdown. Bursting with new gameplay ideas that embrace the Wii Remote’s unique abilities, LostWinds puts the power of the wind in the palm of your hand.

Pirates: The Key of Dreams
Pirates: The Key of Dreams is a frantic, nautical shoot ’em up. Sail your way across the Caribbean, cannons blazing, looting booty, running blockades and, ultimately, battling Blackbeard himself. The player takes control of a Navy Captain sent deep undercover as a ruthless Pirate in order to seek out and retrieve The Key of Dreams, a valuable and dangerous cursed artefact. Rescue castaways to bolster your ship's crew. Gain performance increases to your navigation, weaponry, structural integrity and cartography skills. Collect increasingly powerful weaponry including Rockets, Mines, Chain Shot, Saw Blades and a Flamethrower to hurl destruction into the path of your enemies.

Play against three of your scurvy friends or AI opponents in pitched multiplayer battles with more than 35 levels in seven themed environments. Choose from different ship types that reflect your play style. You can even play in turbo mode if you're Pirate enough!

Pop
Pop is all about popping bubbles! It may sound simple, but there are lots of things you can do to get a high score and have fun. Just keep an eye on the timer because when it runs out, it's game over! Each bubble is worth both points and time so try to fill up your timer first, then focus on scoring high. You can then start to chain the same colour of bubbles together and pop them for big points - a great way to increase your score!

Friends can join you in a game of Pop, too! Whenever you are playing, all they need to do is grab their Wii Remote and then join in the action. Watch out because they may start using power-ups to hold you back! If they do try to pump up some bubbles or detonate a nuke, this will create a shockwave which will destroy any matching colours of bubbles it touches.

Finally there are badges for completing certain objectives, online high-score tables and WiiConnect24 messages so you can keep up with your friends’ progress and boast about your own.

Star Soldier R
Welcome to a new kind of shooter where players aim for the best scores within a two or five minute time limit!

Assembled in record time to counter the advance of a powerful enemy, the mysterious Brain Forces, the ‘Caesar’ starfighter takes off to fight for the very future of mankind! Shoot down countless enemies, upgrade your ship with power-ups hidden throughout the levels and carry out an all-out assault against the core of the enemy fortress! Combining the excitement of shoot 'em ups with in-depth scoring strategies, this state-of-the-art competitive shooter will keep you coming back for more!

Upload your best scores via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and pit your skills against the world's best fighter pilots from the comfort of your living room. Hone your skills and show the world who's boss!

Toki Tori
Toki Tori is his name and collecting eggs is his game! In this puzzle/platform game, players get to use a variety of items such as the Telewarp, InstantRock and Slug Sucker. Clever use of these items is needed to solve the game's more than 70 levels. These levels range from easy to brain-teasingly hard, resulting in dozens of hours of puzzle playtime.

Toki Tori makes the most out of what Wii has to offer. It uses the Wii Remote’s unique control scheme to offer players a new and more relaxing play style. A second player can help you out by drawing hints on-screen while you are playing. The game even uses the Wii Message Board in a unique way!

TV Show King
Become King of a fun TV trivia show! Confront friends and family with your Mii and see who is the smartest! Let your Mii try to answer fun and challenging trivia questions, from some old classics to original stumpers, spanning across history, geography, literature, science, sports and entertainment. Make it to the finals and see who can win the greatest amount of cash in one last, ultimate duel.

With more than 3,000 questions to answer and a lively TV set complete with host, DJ and cheering crowd, TV Show King will make you feel like you’re really under the spotlight. Use the Wii Remote as a torch, a scratching tool or pointer as you answer tricky questions in a variety of innovative ways. And don’t forget to keep your fingers crossed when the quiz show wheel starts spinning to determine whether you double your money or loose everything! The stakes are high, and so is the tension, in TV Show King!

WiiWare software is available for download from 20 May, only in the Wii Shop Channel.

I'm getting the Pirate one ASAP and the rest whenever.

I don't think your article really made that clear. It reads as though each company confirmed their own game, which would reveal nothing of the possibility for other games. Did each company actually mention both of those games?

Either way, I'm just a little disappointed if there's nothing first party hitting yet.

My gambling addiction forced me to download the Blackjack game last night. It looks kinda pretty and has nice achievements but if you've ever played real Blackjack at all, don't bother with this version. As soon as I realized you can't split pairs OR buy insurance when the dealer has an Ace showing I wrote it off as a dumbed-down idiot version. I really hate that shit.
