Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

I'm not sure whether to get Toki Tori, seeing as I haven't played the GBC game
Not having played the GBC game makes it all the more worth it, because some of the puzzles are directly pulled from there. If you have played it before then you can breeze through those.

Frontier is very pleased with Lostwinds success

Pleased' is an understatement," he said of the reaction from critics and fans.

"The reaction has been exceptional - from both reviewers, which is very pleasing, and also the user reviews are extremely high – we've also had very many people who have taken the time to email us directly with their entirely positive feedback, which is very appreciated," commented Braben, boss of Cambridge-based studio Frontier Developments.

To be fair, he had a reasonable explanation in the LostWinds thread. It just indicated that he has terrible tastes :p

On a side note, I'm very interested to see some sales data on all these titles (LostWinds in particular). Any realistic chance that they might be made available at some point?

Which DLC packs is worth getting? I know I'll buy the dungeon one, but not sure about the rest.
honestly, IMHO all of the dungeon packs are worth getting (that would be I believe shrines, luxurious house, race packs, and dungeon pack.. I believe).

The race packs are one dungeon each at level 8, but two of the dungeons are kind of fun in that you have to get information on them before you can explore them. Not to mention the extra races actually provide a nice aesthetic to your town.

The dungeon pack itself is a seemingly random mix of dungeons scattered throughout and I believe almost every one adds some cap increase. easily the best value of all the packs.

the luxurious house dungeon is very high level and I believe a little more difficult. One of those "difficult challenges, nice visual and somewhat game-based reward" things.

Shrines I know nothing about, so I don't know what the last dungeon pack does.

Really IMHO the only worthless DLC is the clothing.. I said "$2. why not." but yeah, really is not at all worth $2. But I don't think IMHO there is a bad dungeon pack out of the bunch. The race one is the closest to not being worth it, but once you have the houses setup throughout and a ton of other-race adventurers it kind of adds a fun feel to the game.

Any word on when Pokemon Ranch will be heading stateside?

Nope, no word, yet. I was asking the same question a few pages ago and I had to be persistent to get an answer. Figured I would help you out. :)

Nothing finalized (only Japan so far) but you have to believe they're going to put it out in the U.S. and elsewhere. Us Pokemon nuts have the MONIES to burrrrn!!!! :D

Great, lostwinds is such a jewel.

I've thus far downloaded Lost Winds, Defend Your Castle, and MLAAK. This is a really awesome combination thus far, and I can honestly say it hits every note that I'd want it to.

Lost Winds is such a beautiful little game. Just serene and calming, and a great way to come home from a hard day at work and just chill.

My girlfriend and I both give it an A-. Would've gotten an A if it had been just a bit longer.

Defend Your Castle is great fun as a multiplayer game, though I don't care for it much when it comes to playing it alone. When it starts getting truly insane though, it's just ridiculous and I actually enjoy it immensely for just that reason.

We give it a B. It's only really fun playing it together, at least in our experience.

My Life as a King ... Not my kind of game. So why the hell do I love it? I can't explain it beyond stating that the little details, the characterizations on some of the people, and the sheer stupid whimsy of building my own city is great.

I'd give it an A. Girlfriend gives it an A-. Turns out having an urban planning degree (in her case) doesn't help you much in the game. [I assumed that, but it still bothered her, so she deducted half a grade from it.]

Oh well, can't make everyone happy.

Can you elaborate a bit more on that? I'm curious to know how much the game concepts clashed with what she wanted to do with a real life urban planning mindset.

So after playing a bit more of TT I must say it's absolutely awesome! Everyone who likes puzzle games (as in puzzle-solving) should get it. It's a bit on the easy side (I just breezed through to the middle of the
sewers
) - didn't try out the hard levels yet) but I finished Portal in one go without breaking a sweat either and it was still loads of fun.

I've got a question for the guys who purchased Dr. Mario:
Is the pointer jerky for you in "Germ Buster" mode?
No, but controls are more finicky than in the DS version. Maybe adjust your sensitivity? Or is it just in Dr. M?

Hey Phife, it's just in Dr. Mario, but no worries, that mode sucks.

I let her design her city beforehand on the little map that the Japanese guy created, and she did that on the computer and then printed it out so that she would have a guide for how she wanted to build the place.

But after she started doing it, she found that things weren't moving the way in which she wanted -- at least not in such a way to advance her adventurers. She hated the idea, for example, that adventurers would check every shop and at seemingly random, rather than following the foot traffic that she intended when she designed her city. Part of her studies have been in transportation design and she found this randomness to be especially irritating since she'd taken into account things like perspective (as in trying to create visually interesting pathways to attempt to lure consumers to certain places first, then having them expand from that central location to others based on convenience).

I honestly can't explain any of it quite as well as she could, but basically the game wasn't able to take into effect many of the things that someone designing neighborhoods, towns, or cities would consider. Obviously, she wasn't under any illusions that the game would simulate this sort of detail perfectly, but she was curious if it could work at least partly. Once she basically game up on it though, she had (and is having) a great time with the game and really enjoys it.

I think it would be interesting to see a game take into account certain things like this at some point, though I'm not sure how feasible that would be. Especially not in a downloadable title.

I see. Interesting points. I was a bit annoyed at the randomness at first too, mainly after I built the academies and training hall.

The funny thing is that since I've played RPGs since forever, while playing MLaaK I soon realized I never go in a logic way to shops inside towns either. I would just randomly run around comparing stats in armor/weapons, then I would remember a certain accessory somewhere else, etc. So I started finding the adventurers randomly buying stuff around to be pretty accurate to how I act as a player in games. :lol

Have any WiiWare games that use the balance board been announced? I think WiiWare would be a good place for developers to test out some concepts within simple games.

My new town is actually working very well compared to my first, which I gave up on after growing frustrated with some of my early, stupid design decisions. But yeah, I'm completely ignoring any of the facets of city design that she adheres to and just doing what's in my best interests.

This is partly true in my case, though I typically did have an order in which I checked things. I would ordinarily start with weapons, then armor, then magic shops (depending on the game), accessories, and then items. So there was a pretty reasonable order by which I researched a new town's wares, though I can't say I was obsessively trapped in it.

Damn, you're good then. The normal levels are giving me some trouble already in the second area, and the hard levels..... let's say I'm not yet ready for them. :$ Very fun and addictive game though, I'll be playing this for a long time.

Haven't tried the hard levels yet. I don't think I'm all too good. You just have to look at the level (minus button) and visualize how you would play it.

So you're Gunstar - it's hard to keep track since the names don't match :D .

Hudson Soft said that they were looking into the possibility of adding balance board support for their Tetris Wiiware game. I think it could be interesting - tilt left or right to move the pieces, and maybe tap with your foot to spin.

Yeah.. sortof.

Hudson is toying with the idea of using the balance board for Tetris Wii. Exactly how they're planning to implement it is currently unknown though.

I have haven't downloaded anything. GTAIV has been taking up most of my time. I still undecided if I am going to buy Lost Winds. Another game that appeals to me is Defend you Castle because I loved the flash game.

I know I'll probably buy the Pokemon game just because I'm a Pokemon freak. Does anyone know that to get your Pokemon over from D/P do you have to take them off the DS game? Or do they stay on the DS and play in the farm at the same time.

So I came home today to discover I had been knocked down to #4, down from 1st, in the SAm 2-min mode. Okay, not a problem. After a few several tries, I manage 895k and reclaim my spot.
I'm thinking, that's not bad. Very sloppy, but I imagine the 2-min mode maxes out at about a million, right?

So I go check the international ranking.

1.12M omg

Yeah, they're moved off of the DS card and onto the Wii. Which makes sense, since it's less a game than it is a storage application and Mew-dispensing tool. :P
Day one here. :( My boxes are nearly full in both US copies I have.

i want to know whats gamer's think on it too who actually "played the game" (rather than people who judges the game from the title name or looking at a video).

I played over an hour. I'm posting from my Wii w/out a keyboard so I'll just make a list for now.

Pros-
-Qix!
-Animals move differently by species
-Animal interactions (strong eat weak)
-Lots of levels
-Different enviroments & animals

Cons-
-Relatively slow
-Edge of fence detection problems
-Poor graphics
-Powerups time limited

Added Shiggy to my adress book and Wiz to my Dr. M friendlist. Augh I hate game-specific FCs.

Dunno if it is region-free. I doubt it but added you so we can try it out. My Wii FC: 3250 1507 8167 3380.

Downloaded Lostwinds, FFMLAAK and DR Mario and I have to say that FF blows the competition away. I really didn't expect such a well thought out game. LostWinds is nice as well, nice music, very relaxing.

Star Soldier R and Final Fantasy are suprisingly addicting. LostWinds is nice too, though it still feels somewhat slow paced even when I try to use the wind to make Toku move faster. Toki Tori is a pretty simple game, yet I enjoy it alot because of the cute graphic and the puzzles. Dr. Mario feels harder for whatever reasons (at least for me), and I lost badly to some random person on WiFi battle.:lol

Why won't someone make a SSR thread? :(

Who am I going to discuss awesome scroing strategies with!? Even the SSR forum on GameFAQs failed me! I'm that desperate!

This man speaks the truth.

The sewers level had some nice puzzles. Not really "bite-my-nails" hard but pretty rewarding when you get it done. I will save the hard levels for later :D .

So buy TOKI TORI!

I just hated the fact that to go from the training hall to the tavern across the street, they'd go down the street, turn around, then walk back. :lol
