Bungie to double in size

it only took 3 people to make ikaruga (or was it less than that?)
NICE.

I suppose one person did the music, another the programming, and the other the graphics?

Man, Halo 3 on Xbox Next with 130 people working on it...

...that shit is going to truly be epic. Hehe, I said epic. That word is so overused. But seriously, that's one big staff.

I hope not everyone works in halo 3. I would like to see some new IPs from bungie.

Well, didn't Bungie already confirm that their next project would be something "different"? I think that should sort of calm your fears.

its a shame we cant add mods to our ignore list.
:D

What was wrong with what i said? im just proving a point, you dont nee 160 people to make a really good game.

Bob tell Bungie something that will make his wife happy?

ikaruga was developed by three treasure staff and three g-rev staff. hiroshi iuchi directed the game, designed the backgrounds, and composed the soundtrack. which is pretty crazy. but even as a shmup fanboy, i can't say ikaruga is better than halo 2. battle garegga was also developed by six people, though, and that game's better than halo 2. of course all this really establishes is that 2d shooters require less manpower than elaborate cinematic fps's. and that gaf is stupid.

I hope they can hire a level designer, or two. :( And throw Eric Nylund on as the official writer. :( And hire a guy to smack those fuckers whenever half of a character model randomly pops into view. :( And get someone to figure out how to make walls that Master Chief can't leisurely stick his arm inside of. :(

it doesnt take 160 people to program a camera to move around a scripted event. If anything the size increase means they are trying to get something done in time for a certain special launch date.

I dont know if halo 2 is better than ikaruga, ive never played it. but the manpower needed for a cinematic fps doesnt have to be huge. People make feature length films on a next to nothing budget somtimes.

are you shitting me?! No bloody way. The art + the code.. etc.. 3? Come on :lol

But if true = 0_0

It's true.. well, it was more than 3, but an unreasonably small number of people worked on ikaruga..
and IMO, the game is a tighter package, and better off because of it... The art direction and game concepts were very focused.

yea, they didnt need all those people and that budget to make LOTR trilogy!
robert rodriguez made a great movie with just a few people and 30,000!

cmon now sp0rsk.....while I do think they dont need a 130 to make the sequel....they are obviously gonna need a shitload more than 3/6 people for the type of game halo is.

i only assume they got 130 so they can try to get halo 3 out by Xbox360's launch....double the people, double the speed, half the dev time. What is important is if they are managed right.....cause they seemed to have had problems managing all thier people for halo 2....now its gonna be even harder.

peace

I'm hoping that the team doesn't get TOO large that they can't function as effectively and lose focus. I have the utmost faith in Bungie and I realize this is merely an effort to push Halo 3 out for the PS3 launch but I still worry about the possible loss of quality.

see thats what I am worried about.

they need a Strong management team here....because they had problems with managing and focusing when developing for halo 2. and that was with 63 people...now its 130...

Now that would be something.
Yeah that's the rumor going around town, so to say.

For the uninitiated:
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/591/591818p1.html
"From what we understand, Bungie is hard at work on, not so surprisingly, Halo 3, which will be ready day and date with the launch of PlayStation 3."

You can therefor assume that this move adds a bit of validity to that rumor. You don't just double the size of a production team unless you want the game to next installment to come out at a quicker pace.

This move could also be as a result of Bungie working on two projects. They have that unamed game which isn't related to Halo and also Halo 3 to work on. Microsoft might want Bungie to be their primary dev team and give them the opportunity to branch out and work on several projects at once.

Because the only game bungie can work on is Halo 3

PIMPS AT SEA!

Bungie to double in size.

It doesn't mean Halo 3 will be 2 times better than Halo 2.
It doesn't mean all of Bungie will be working on Halo 3.
It doesn't mean Halo 3 will be ready on DD/MM/YYYY.
It doesn't mean Bungie will be working on N different projects.

It only means that Bungie is 2 times larger than yesterday.

You do, however, need 160 people to have an inter-office tennis/volleyball tournament while you piss away valuable time (see Halo 2 LE DVD :) ).

Right now the only positions Bungie is hiring for are:
AI Engineer
User Interface Designer
Art Production Manager
Tools Programmer
Lead Character Animator

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing the rest of the jobs are for their extensive custodial staff. Bungie is known to have the best kept offices for a reason afterall.

I just hope that it doesn't get out of hand. Rare anyone? Diluting the talent and mismanagement is always going to be a hurdle for a growing company like Bungie. This must be over a period of months though, I don't see how Bungie can just double in size like that. Of course money isn't a problem for them, but integrating all those people into the system, accomodating them, can't just happen overnight surely? If this is just a matter of setting up a separate team so them can't work on two games at the same time, then I don't have much assurance that the new team can produce Halo-calibre games.

Isn't that stubbs the zombie?
That game is being developed by Wideload Games, which was formed by Alex Seropian. He founded Bungie and worked on Halo, which coincidentally is the engine that powers the game.

I'm all for posting the obviously blatent results of news reports but I didn't know speculating was such a faux-pas. There has to be some fun left in the forums after all. ;)

Bungie wont be splitting into 2 teams any time soon, when they did so before (Pheonix) Jason Jones did not like it.

And 65 people people is the bungie core, a LOT more people than that worked on Halo 2, so Allards statement is confusing, it either means the core staff is doubling or it simply means they've started hiring the supplementary staff, which just means Bungie are moving along with the project.

OR, as i suspect, Allard never mentioned the number 65, some cleaver newshound dug that up and his quote was in reference to the total number of people that worked on halo 2, which makes more sense as it would explain why there are only a few positions open right now and be in line with what we have been told about the vigors of next generation development.

It'd be pretty awesome IMO to have all the new people work on remaking the old multiplayer maps of the past two Halo games (& Halo PC) while the Bungie elite make the single player/new multi maps. Every Halo/2/PC map plus Halo 3 maps playable on Xbox Live would be amazing.
