Bungies view of TGS

Looking forward to next week's update, they say they are giving a tour of their new studio.

A few folks asked me if I was there to unveil Halo 3. I smiled and told them the usual Bungie line. We haven't announced our new project yet, blah, blah, blah. We may not have announced it, but its coming along nicely.

I did stroll over and watch the MGS4 trailer and it was super nice. It also looked far more achievable than the Killzone 2 stuff from E3, which it's already being compared with. As a matter of fact, it looked eerily like the newest Ghost Recon footage, but with a crazy dancing robot. Graphically, it's going to be more about art than technology this generation. I honestly think the 360 and the PS3 will end up looking about the same.

Could have fooled me...

They didn't like the Revo controls and think MGS4 looks like GRAW with a robot.

Opinions.

if bungie is saying that then you can take it for granted.

btw. pepsi says coca cola sucks.

Bungie praised Sony games in the past (was it J&D or ICO ?), at the same time you got Jason Rubin who said the Xbox was a buggy PC in a box. Of course you can ignore their opinion, we're on GAF fantasy world afterall, a world where japanese games still matter.

I got to watch the keynote by our very own Robbie Bach, which to be honest was kind of a rehash of the previous day's press conference, but it served a purpose and served up a lovely demo of the Xbox 360 media features in action – including a streaming HDTV version of Star Wars: Episode 2. Who says you need Blu-Ray for HDTV? Yup, I am now getting me a Media Center. Here's hoping Microsoft makes streaming video available for non Media Center PCs.

Thats the thing, will Microsoft make streaming video available for normal pcs. Still id take blue ray over streaming.

And what is the deal with HD-DVD. Are MS gonna release a HD-DVD model of the Xbox 360? Or has that been shot down.

i don't care about japanese games (except a few). i think that western developers are at least as good and innovative and blabla as the japanese but i don't really give much about what the companies are saying about their competitors. marlboro says memphis causes cancer.

Yah because no one outside of us cares about Japanese games anymore. I guess that clearly explains why MS has been busting their ass trying to get them on board for the 360. Just so they can please this forum.

"Who says you need Blu-Ray for HDTV?"

Yeah, you not even need a DVD for HDTV, a CD is more than enough, just preload everything into RAM and than play. Yeah, after a few minutes you would have to pause insert the second CD and preload again, than the third CD, than the fourth CD, than ... yeah, forget Blu-Ray! :lol

Where did they say anything about not liking the controls?

The Nintendo controller was the talk of the show by about lunchtime. So was Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4. Half of the talk was positive. I will leave you to cipher which.

Yaaaaa.

(He talked dearly about MGS4 later)

That's one hell of an assumption. Btw, he was refering to the "buzz" at the show, not his personal opinion.

Has Bill got his employees under the thumb then?

We should be seeing what the first trailer of what Bungie is working on at X05. I'm guessing it will be an announcement trailer in the style similiar to the first Halo 2 trailer we saw at X02.

I'm personally hoping they put out Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 in the fall of 2006, then move on to another original project. But with the Halo movie thrown in their for summer 2007 who knows if they plan to launch Halo 3 with the movie or what.

well, he is right to an extent.
most of mgs4 trailer wow factor comes from art and attention to details, not technical reasons

You make it sound like it isn't technical accomplished or something which is far from the truth. It has all of that which makes it incredible.

so... attention to detail takes no technical skill?

post of da year.

BTW, Bungie saying "graphically, this generation will be more about art than technology" is embarrassing. That kind of illogic should be posted on GAF and not a professional game company's web site

The ghost recon engine is very impressive. I could have believed a MGS 4 quality trailer could have been done if the MGS 4 trailer director was involved.

We did see some cool new footage of Ghost Recon 4 and it has the sickest animation. Remember the allegedly fake Killzone 2 trailer? That kind of animation. The next gen is going to be a doozy.

O_o So which is it? Do GR3 and MGS4 look the same? How does GR3 do Killzone 2 animation while MGS4 looks more achievable than Killzone 2?

Ok and who gives a fuck. I'm tired of some people trying to take the air out of Kojima and Sony's tires by saying this. Yes it's true that art played a HUGE part in making MGS4 possible, yet Hideo still gave alot of credit to the hardware. I mean wasn't it obvious in the video?

:lol :lol @ bungie's revolution controller's comments hey bungie didn't you know that FPS you so love will play a lot better on the rev than on the 360?

Post of the day!! Can someone explain this to the GAF? Bungie dev seems confused to me. Some do they think KZ is almost non reachable. I would hope not for Halo3's sake. I hoped they didn't forget that KZ was talked about as the Halo killer. Of course it wasn't, but you better believe they will try a second time. Maybe Guriella will get closer this time.

And between Ridge Racer 6 and Test Drive, I believe I spotted a force-feedback steering wheel from Hori. Joy!

Hori? Uh, the only thing they have listed on their site for the 360 is....whatever the hell this is:
front.jpg

They dont have any wheels at all, this cant be right. Hori? no....

So in other words art = wow factor that seperates the few quality games versus the fluff.

While techincal = generic, ho hum.

I see. So the MGS trailer would have looked equally as good if it was running on slightly older tech like say the Source engine. Is that what your saying? I guess it must be, art direction is the real reason it was impressive right? Through the magic of the Kojima camera the same exact trailer would be able to run on the Source engine and do without with the level of HDR lighting, high quality shading, real time soft shadowing and self shadowing, level of geometry, normal mapping and facial texture, seamless animation, physical simulation of smoke, debris, and wind, depth of field and heat haze fx etc. etc. etc...and look just as stunning.

Maybe Kojima really should get all the credit afterall...

Bungie's just upset that they don't have such a cool controller setup for a FPS.

The writing's on the wall, Bungie. You shouldn't have signed with Microsoft.

MGS4 for the win!!

I would say that, yes.

Through the magic of the Kojima camera the same exact trailer would be able to run on the Source engine and do without with the level of HDR lighting[/b, high quality shading, real time soft shadowing and self shadowing, level of geometry, normal mapping and facial texture, seamless animation, physical simulation of smoke, debris, and wind, depth of field and heat haze fx etc. etc. etc...and look just as stunning.
Bolded are features that Source supports.

Art Direction is going to be HUGE this generation. Art direction really shows off a clear and consistent vision of your product, which Kojima and Valve excels at.

Fucker. I spat out my soda with this remark.:lol

hehe : ) me ? i am the biggest hideo kojima fanboy around: i was playing the original mg on my msx 18 years ago and policenauts in japanese (thanks to my japanese friend) before you even knew who he was, probably : )

he and his team are currently, by far, the best guys around, definately not trying to take the air out of good old hideo.
I am just saying that, from a *technical* point of view, after the initial shock you start realizing that mgs4 does nothing "out of this world". Number of polys is nothing incredible, textures are far from being "pixellization free", nothing like unified lightning, parallax or displacement mapping in sight...
On the contrary, wjat i am saying is, if mgs4 is the most spectacular thing i've ever seen (because it is) that's mostly thanks to team kojima's skills. Ps3 is backing them up, of course, but that bungie guy is right. it's not the tools that made it possible, it's the artists.

I really think it's the truth though. These systems will be powerful enough that it's not unthinkable for the most technically amazing game to simply not look as good as one that is better designed and has higher quality assets. In the top tier, the best looking games will most likely be the ones that have the most properly modeled and animated models, and environments, not the one that has the higher texture resolution or the one that has a slightly more advanced lighting model. He's not saying that technology is unimportant, just that it's the art assets that will push games past each other.

EDIT - The poster above me has put what I've been trying to say in a few threads into words better than I've managed to do. Listen to him.
