Has Your View on the Switch 2 Changed?

Since the game key card is essentially the same as "buying digital" with an extra step, then what he wrote makes sense, as you can only buy digital from whatever region your account is from.

But saying "importing is dead" is a bit melodramatic. It isn't hard to make a secondary account on the same device for the eShop market you want to import from and then use the key card with that account. Same as buying digital from a different region. An extra step, a pain in the ass to be sure, but still doable.

Did you try it or did you see reports of it ?

Cause when I launch the download of a japanese eShop game from my european account, I don't
face any issue, so it wouldn't make sense game key cards have this issue

No, I can't say I've tried it but I feel there's a fundamental misunderstanding between us.

You already own that Japanese digital game but the only way you could have done that is by having a Japanese eshop account to purchase it with. You can't BUY that Japanese eshop digital game with your European account because that account is region locked to the European eshop. So long as your JP region account remains on that console, any licenses bought on the console will be playable by any account.

But the game key cards are the same thing as buying digital because it just triggers a download from the card's regional eshop. If I import a Japanese game key card but only have a US/NA eShop account, that game key card is useless.

I played both Zelda games from last gen on my SW2, none of the newer games its for me. It's still a kiddie games company. I am waiting on Metroid Prime to use it again.

Excuse my ignorance, but are you sure accounts are region locked?? Because my SW2 + MKWorld is from Hong Kong and I could activate the game on my account just changing my region to Hong Kong in the Nintendo site.

Yeah, I could. But I have a MSI Claw 8 Ai, and use that for handheld gaming.
Grip case (or some 3rd party "joycons") would be a fix somewhat yeah.
I have this one.

Not really. I was sold from the beginning as a way to play upgrades Sw1 games + exclusives and the odd indie/game I particularly want in handheld (FFT). So far it's done that job well. Bananza was great, played a bunch of Switch 1 titles that I missed/didn't finish up, excited for MP4, have been using it for things like FFT/Silksong/Suikoden remasters in between.

PC is my main device so Switch 2 is naturally the best complimentary one for me.

Indeed, you didn't understand what I said I believe.

For eg: I bought Red Dead Redemption on the japanese eShop with my european account, after changing the country once.
And now, my european account is back to Europe in region, but my japanese purchase (on the same account) remains. And while I own the japanese Red Dead on my European account, I can also buy Red Dead on the european eShop.
And when I download the game (like after buying the Switch 2), with my european account, I still can download the japanese version.

So it doesn't matter on which region my only account and console are, the console will still download my japanese Red Dead right away from the japanese servers.

I was looking at getting one some time this month but honestly in Canada games are $100-$114 before taxes and I'm having a hard time justifying that it's like the main reason I haven't bought one yet. It's not even affordability, I can it's just I don't know if the games are worth that. I do want one though for the new Rhythm Heaven game lol.

Only in that I really didn't grasp how big the thing was and how that would negatively affect my use of it. While it's not giant-brick Steamdeck tier, Switch 2 is large enough to be uncomfortable and unwieldly. I'm find myself concerned about carrying it between rooms because it's too big to wrap my hand around. Laying on my side on the couch or in bed is just out of the question now, it was already uncomfortable on Switch 1.

Game/Value wise though it's still what I expected and I'm happy. I've played a lot of Mario Kart and I think it's fantastic. Donkey Kong may just be the best 3D platformer I've ever played. It's nice to play games like FFT and know I'm getting a better framerate.

I'm not one of those "but every game now" type of people... I can enjoy one game for months because I game at night before bed. Really looking forward to Resident Evil Requiem and Final Fantasy

Still mostly indifferent. Consider picking one up here and there. My switch one experience was not great, so I'm not super motivated. I already split time among ps5, pc, and various retro hardware. It feels like everything simultaneously does not get used. But the switch truly just sits there compared to the modern stuff. I don't find nintendo games as magical as some seem to. And it's not very useful as a portable thanks to the connectors on the railings failing despite this little use. I looked at fixing that and it's a huge fiddle fuck. Reminds me of the pro controller I had to crack open right away to fix the stupid dpad. That was obnoxious half-assembling it 5 times to get that scotch tape just right.

It's useless currently - collecting dust waiting for Metroid 4
I see the potential - it's a good hardware.
It's just like PS5 situation - good tech and lack of first party games.

It's funny that I wanted to get the Switch 2 for the bigger screen and it's been living in the dock every since I bought it.
Yea I was not thinking straight when I bought it.
But I do think the magnetic controllers work well enough that it could become a standard for handheld devices. Maybe a big heavy Steam deck 2?
edit-I mean magnetic attached controlls not the joycons. Those things are uncomfortable.

No when I play Tony Hawk even during gameplay I keep having pop ups asking me to connect to my Activision account, and when I play Outlaws I often have Ubisoft connect disconnection errors
Interesting. Do you have to connect to keep playing or can you just decline those requests?

My views on it have changed in terms of its power, no longer is there a gulf like there was between the Wii and PS3 and 360....not saying it is as powerful as Series X or PS5 but even so it's no slouch either, the fact you can get Star Wars outlaws and Indiana Jones on there tells you that..

I honestly have not played it enough to know.

I need to start using it a bit more before investing in any other handheld device. I currently have Steam Deck, Portal and Switch 2 and really do not take advantage of them as much as I thought I would. My need for mobile gaming is less than it used to be. iPhone and iPad seem to be enough for my needs while at work and most of the travel I do is for family.

Not really, I feel pretty affirmed in my plan to wait until the OLED revision of the console, and avoiding FOMO is paying off.

Also feel confident based on multi-plat ports so far that the decline in graphic jumps really does make the compromises as a handheld not hit as hard, whereas the gulf between Switch 1 games and other platforms looked way worse.

I'm just wondering how many first party games Nintendo needs to release for this narrative to disappear.

Here is the first year of fully exclusive (no cross-gen) first party PS5 games:

Astro's Playroom
Demon's Souls
Returnal
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

That's it, and one of those is a (really good) tech demo you'll finish in a single sitting.

Here is the first year of fully exclusive (no cross-gen) Switch 2 games:

Mario Kart World
Donkey Kong Bananza
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment
Kirby Air Riders
Mario Tennis Fever
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
Splatoon Raiders
Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave

+ also a handful of Switch 2 exclusive expansion DLCs, if you want to include those or not it's up to you. I think the cross-gen factor is a much bigger consideration here too -- certain games like Pokemon Legends look and run considerably worse on Switch 1, while cross-gen PS4/5 games at the time didn't have nearly as dramatic of difference. Now let's consider that there will be even more coming and announced, this is by no means a comprehensive lineup -- how much is enough?

Technically Splatoon Raiders doesn't have a release date yet and we don't know if Fire Emblem is in the first year. You could add Pokopia though.

But overall you're right. Nintendo has lots of new games releasing in the coming months.
