Burglaries

I was kind of frightened to learn that some kind of Eastern-European gang has been very active in the village where I live. There have been a lot of burglaries lately, and I've been seeing suspicious things in my neighborhood. Earlier tonight, around 7PM, a van stopped in front of my house. Someone went outside to write down the license plate numbers, and when she did, the van drove away, maybe 20 meters, and stopped again. And then it did the same thing again. So tonight I said to myself, "you know, what the fuck do I care, I'm calling the police". Fortunately they were very helpful and told me that I should've called immediately after seeing the van. However, it was good that I called and they assured me that I could call for anything, even for seemingly insignificant events.

So, well, I'm pretty scared now. Not so much for things being stolen (I only don't want to lose stuff like photo books and my computer's HD), but for possible violence and the psychological effect of a stranger messing around in my home. I don't think I would be comfortable anymore if that happened.

I'm a pretty paranoid person. I'm gonna stay up tonight, because I know I won't be able to sleep. One thing that's reassuring is that we have an alarm installed, our windows and locks are well protected, and so on. But still, this is creeping me out.

Anybody ever had their house broken into? What was the effect on yourself? Do you have any tips for me, or reassuring facts?

Please keep it serious. :)

Alarms are useless as they only alert you when someone is already inside your house with a mace (and lube... serious enough?).

My home was broken into when I was a kid and we moved about a few weeks later, but there were other circumstances involved which meant it was probably safer or wiser to do so. The burglars took a few things and pissed in some of our Tupperware containers, and we were advised to throw away all opened food stuffs because of this. I am still uncertain as to whether any of my other stuff was pissed on or in, which has left me in a constant state of paranoia not unlike Seinfeld when that bitch taunted him by dropping something in the toilet (well, not quite constant and maybe it didn't really have a very large effect on me *shrug*).

If you don't want to be physically harmed don't be home when they break in, but if you don't want any of your stuff pissed on or in don't be out of the house or else you'll never know where they jammed your toothbrush. :(

Haha, I remember that episode. That was great, Jerry threw everything out. :lol

I know that about alarms. But the alarm will make them leave. I don't care much about what they take (except for the things mentioned), as long as I don't get hurt.

I just don't know. I think thieves only break into houses for one obvious purpose. Physical violence is a different ballgame. But still, it's natural to be scared of it.
