The last time pics were posted people said they weren't impressive. But this looks good to me. Never played a Burnout game though. Probably never will either.

It looks significantly worse than the console versions, but I'm still holding on to my PSP solely for this game right now.

...

Anyway Hopefully this won't have any load time issues... pleasepleaseplease.

looks ok, but GD... lay off the racers for a bit PSPdevs. (unless your name is polyphony digital)

Ironicaly, I bought burnout3 while I was waiting for GT4 to release. I might do the same thing here :D

it looked really good at e3 to me... the crash cam had a poor framerate though, but visually, that was the only blemish, and even that is fairly minor

:lol This, and Liberty City Stories are the only PSP titles I am getting for sure...Oh, can't forget Sin City on UMD :lol Just because I'm a Sin City/Frank Miller nut.

Looks decent. Wasn't Marconelly spouting about how the PSP was more powerful than the Ps2 in some regards?
sounds like you're taking his comments out of context...quick search results:

(unless you're talking about progressive scan in all games, which is in the second link)
now regarding you downplaying the X360... :b

Well it looks awesome to me. I mean the buildings haver some pretty slick detail going on,all this on a handheld, bring it on:)

Now,that said, where the heck is Sega for hand held racers:(

Sega Rally remix baby, this should be a sure thing for them, make it happen.

It's going to own. No question about it.

But on another note, am I the only one tired of all screen shots these days that are released not actually being from the -gameplay-? They're all just cool camera angles showing off what the graphics in the game will be like. I want to see the game during a race, with position numbers and all that jazz.

Just something that kind of bugs me. Heh.

This new batch of screens looks quite a bit better to me. They added the post processing effects (sparks glow, motion blur) which were pretty much completely missing in the E3 build and those old screens. Still, even the E3 version of this game was very nice, and controlled and played pretty much the same as console versions. Rock solid smooth framerate too, crash cam not included (everything moved pretty slow during the crashes which was weird)

Even as it was, burnout was my 4th rated PSP game at E3.
1. Virtua Tennis / 2. Daxter (can't decide, both were pretty damn good)
3. Pursuit Force
4. Burnout

Looks decent. Any shots without the turbo-motion blur effect on? I wanna see the textures.

I think it's more a matter of what the dev's don't want you to see, to be honest. I'll be waiting until I see some actual ingame (non-replay) screens and vids before I make my mind up on this one, although that's not to say that it doesn't look good as it is.

Graphics aren't that hot, but the speed is there. I would say that's more important for this game. Especially since it's on a handheld, it's pretty crazy to hold this game in your hand.

Who cares if textures aren't so hot provided they hide them well? :P

It's hilarious how everyone tries so hard to be impressed when screens are posted of terrible, terrible looking DS games, like Splinter Cell, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, etc., constantly saying how "it looks good for the DS", yet stuff that completely dwarfs anything else that has been done on handhelds, especially the DS, is "eh.. not as good as the console version", "looks ok." :p

i cannot wait till burnout legends for ds materializes, if it is indeed coming to the DS. the threads alone will be entertaining :P

I thought this game was garbage at E3. It was ugly, the frame rate was poor (rock solid my ass) and definitely 30 FPS at most. It was about 10 during the crashes.. and if you so much as bumped into the back of a car, half the time you'd crash. Really, it was horribly disappointing as a big fan of Burnout 3 and Revenge.

It does look better with the new effects and all, but it's no surprise they dont show it minus blur/sparks because it looked terrible compared to other PSP titles and especially compared to recent Burnout titles when it was just typical racing.

That sounds a lot like the original Burnout in that regard which, for some of us, happens to be the game that got us interested in the series in the first place. :)

haha so true.

also the E3 build was claimed to be 70%, so here's hoping frame rate is what they address.

But, it is not. Some Gizmondo games DO look better.

This does look good... why do we forget we're talking about a portable when it comes to some PSP games?

Sure the constant shots of a car in actual burnout-mode with lots of motion blur is probably making the game look better than it looks otherwise - but not much... My only problem is the use of replay angles. Unless of course the screen is HUD-less and disorienting to the point of inducing chronic headaches while you play. Some of the shots have 45° tilts on the camera!

On the track I played, during racing (not crashes, which is what I commented on anyways) I don't remember framerate ever skipping the beat. Admittedly, I wasn't paying attention if it was 30 od 60.

But, it is not. Some Gizmondo games DO look better.
Don't even go there. I've held Gizmondo in my own hands at the E3 and everything on it looks like pure unfiltered ass. Problematic as it was, this game still made gizmondo lineup look really bad graphics-wise.

what do you expect from fanboys?

jarrod said:
Sony laid out the expectation. Nobody expects DS games to look like console stuff, but that's PSP's selling point.

It generally lives up to that billing as well (in person, anyways).

jarrod said:
Yeah. It's Dreamcast 1.5. :P

Yeah, what's so ":p" about that? That's exactly what it's like (only with generally worse textures and better effects).

I'm hoping more games start to put it to better use. Tenchi no Mon, for instance, is such a beautiful game. It would look right at home on a current console even...

I dunno... there's something really off about the combat animation. Maybe it was because the guy playing kept doing the same combo over and over again for 2 whole minutes.

I think it looks pretty good in motion, though. Of course, doing the same combo over and over again would look pretty dumb. I suppose he didn't bother switching styles? Sadly, kinda like Jade Empire, you actually have to switch via a quick menu. Tapping the R button switches between different fighting styles...

Here's a snapshot I just took...

Look in the upper right hand corner. You simply tap the R button to switch your style. I thought they all animated very well. The game is quite lovely. The only thing I really would like is a damn block button...

You think Bebpo is the deciding factor in your purchases?

Not at all, smartass; but seeing as he was the first guy 'round these parts to play it and pretty much declared the game as broken, I thought all hope was lost. And if I recall correctly, JackFrost backed him up in his claims of it's apparent suckiness.

Sholmes said:
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa....whoa.

Are you telling me that Bebpo's damning criticism before hand wasn't entirely accurate?

Obviously, it's an opinion thing, but I actually really enjoyed the demo. The story didn't really do anything for me yet (too early to judge), but the game is pretty fun. It's a freaking action RPG, you aren't going to get DMC3 quality combat here. The combat system that IS here actually offers quite a bit more than your average ARPG.

The world is beautiful and seems like it could be large, the combat is fun and fairly responsive, and the music is just awesome and the VA is good. It really depends on what they do with the rest of the game, though. If they provide a lot of environmental variety and throw some cool dungeons (or dungeon-like) areas in to the game, it could rock. The demo just doesn't reveal enough.

Honestly, my main complaint is the lack of any blocking. I think that would seriously add to the combat...

I'll address his points, though...

-The way you walk around and navigate feels 'off'. It's like you're floating and sliding around when you move.

Disagree. The way a character moves through the world is very important to me. When it is off, I will be bothered all the way through. In this case, however, the movement and animation of that movement feels very good to me. I happen to love the analog disc, though, so not everyone will enjoy the feeling of movement.

-The load times are pretty crappy, but hey it's PSP.

No, they really aren't. In fact, I was astonished at how well they hide a lot of the loading times. Loadtimes are encountered between maps and between scenes. Only when moving between maps do you ever actually see 'now loading", and even then, it isn't long enough to be bothered. The presentation is very polished. Transitions into menus and everything are awesome. It doesn't feel as if it is being hampered by load times. For the record, it takes just shy of 6 seconds to load a new area (just timed it now). I'd hardly call that crappy and it only occurs when you shift the scene. Everything else is free of loading.

-Long boring cutscenes. Long cutscenes might be ok in a console game, but when you're on the go or something sitting and watching a 3-5 min scene of people talking is pretty boring and bad pacing.

I honestly don't mind them. They are fairly well animated and expressive. This game isn't designed to be played in short bursts either. Actually, my first play through of the demo was on a train riding from Hiroshima to Nagoya. Just threw on some noise blocking ear phones and enjoyed the game. If you were only going a short distance, this isn't the game to take with you.

-Controls are pretty bad, like I said earlier movement feels off, and there is almost no depth or fun to the battle system. You can't even block and you only have 1 attack button. R switches through 'stances' and each one has one attack string. But you can't even change stances mid combo. So it's just watching the same attack string over and over, and then you hit R and you watch another one over and over. You can go into the menu and disable hits on the string (like if it was 5 hits you can turn off hit 3 and it'll skip from 2->4) but that doesn't make it any better or less repetitive. You also get a button to use items like health where you'll stand still and drink a health thing.

That isn't really incorrect, but it isn't exactly "un-fun" either. It's an ARPG, afterall. Whether or not this works in the end depends on level design, however.

-Connected to why the battle system sucks, you can't control the camera (woohoo! @_@) both digital and analogue are movement and so not only do you get disorientated and lost in buildings...but you can't even look forward when you're walking down a trail and SEE THE ENEMY GROUP AHEAD.

I had no problems with the camera. It's a scripted, almost side-view like camera. I never found myself lost amongst structures and what not. They built the environment to support the camera. It's better than the cameras in games like DMC and Onimusha, and those are entirely action based.

Have to wait and see, but really, I thought it was pretty fun and has plenty of potential. They COULD screw it up, though....
