Yeah, I remember hearing this this morning. Sure it's a horrible thing, but it's not even on the same continent. I mean I was expecting some interesting stuff, what with DeLays' indictments, GOA's finding that Bush's administration broke the law with it's Overt propaganda, Frist's SEC investigation, Abramoff's possible involvment in a murder, Scooter Libby's treasongate, or at least the new supreme court nominee I expect something. Instead I get Bush ranting about the avain flu for 20 minutes.

President: "Make no mistake we will be ready for this bird flu."
Reporter: "But I asked about your administration's involvment in outing Valerie Plame."
President: "We will do everything to get ready for this terrible"
Reporter: "That's nice but"
President "TERRIBLE disease."

After seeing what happened in New Orleans (local and state gonvernments being powerless to enact any sort of evacuation or general control), I think this really might be the only thing that would work.

If there is a serious outbreak ... realistically, only the military would have any chance of enforcing a quarantine, shutting down borders, shutting down air traffic, etc. Leaving containment to any other body is simply impossible. I'm not saying they would necessarily get it right either, but at least they'd have a chance.
