NEW YORK - The campaigns of President Bush (news - web sites) and Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) are working on the final details for a series of presidential debates set to begin at the end of the month.

One person familiar with the debate negotiations said late Sunday that the two sides have tentatively agreed to hold three presidential debates during a two-week period beginning Sept. 30. The Bush campaign denied there was any deal.

"No deal has been reached. Reports of a tentative agreement — I don't even know what that means — are false," said Nicolle Devenish, communications director for the Bush campaign.

Details of the debates were being negotiated by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III for Bush and attorney Vernon Jordan for Kerry. It was not clear when any agreement would be announced.

A person familiar with the debate negotiations said there was a tentative deal for three debates but that some details were still being worked out. The person spoke on condition of anonymity since the agreement is not final. But Devenish said Baker had told his staff there was not a deal.

The tentative agreement also calls for one vice presidential debate on Oct. 5 between Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) and Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites), Kerry's running mate.

The source said the two campaigns have agreed on the dates and sites proposed by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates — Sept. 30 at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.; Oct. 8 at Washington University in St. Louis; and Oct. 13 at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.

The VP debate should be very entertaining to say the least.

Why does there have to be a VP debate? The VP does NOTHING.

Here's the job of the VP: Break a tie in congress and wait for the President to maybe die.

they don't even have to break a tie, they can give the power to someone else.

This case in matters, these seem to the real people running for president. It has to be, there's no way in hell it's a choice between a chimp and a horse.

*weeps in the corner.

They should change the moderators. I don't want that pussy Jim Lehrer moderating the debates again. What a douche, he let the candidates roll all over him and not answer the questions. Then the candidates argue over bullshit like Bush wants a pedestal so he appears to be as tall as Kerry and one candidate wants something stupid and another wants something else stupid. Ugh. Just debate you fucktards.

Lately when Dick "Go Fuck Yourself" Cheney opens his mouth, interesting stuff happens.
That should be reason enough for the VP debate to become interesting.

I urge everyone to read over opendebates.org to see how fixed the debates actually are.

Yup these debates generally pussy foot around the hard questions... the 2nd debate is suppose to be a question/answer townhall forum session.... I'll actually be watching the debates this year, or at the very least Tivo and watch later in the hope that some REAL questions get asked and answered... but I don't hold high hopes....

I have to ask just in terms of general speaking ability.... how did Bush do last debate(I didn't bother to watch), and does he have much of a chance just in that speaking forum in these upcoming debates? The man seems to trip himself up on the regular simply when he's speaking to the press freeform.

He did quite well. IIRC, most thought it helped him because he was able to show his "charm" while Gore was, well, Gore. But I'm sure they had plenty of time to prepare and knew what questions were going to be asked.
