Buying a 4K TV for PS4K thread!

Remember 4k tv's still overscan by default. So know that 16 by 9 is not the correct aspect ratio. On my Samsung 4k tv I had to set it to a setting called PictureFit to disable the overscan.

Are games upscaled to 4K?

I see a lot of people claiming "content" as a reason for purchase; what content is there outside of BR?

There is literally no reason to buy a 4K tv that's smaller than 50" unless you will be using it from a foot away like a PC monitor. Anyway I have a Sony 4K and the picture quality is amazing.

games could potentially run at higher than 1080p, just not quite 4K, so the upscaling isn't extreme?

is that a thing?

There is no way these specs are going to run games at anything close to 4k. And unless you are buying like an 80" TV, the upscaling is probably not worth it.

I have a 4K TV but until I buy a UHD player it doesn't really do much for me. Even with the good upscaler in Samsungs 1080p upscaled dont' look significantly better than native 1080p.

Yea I have gone thru all the settings, and used a few custom profiles from AV forums, but it only marginally helps. I have been using active 3D since 2011 when I got my previous Bravia and the new one is noticeably darker. I suppose I can just learn to live with it.

Sounds like they are possibly using heavier motion blur reduction with 3D enabled, which may be the culprit. Is there a way to shut that off in 3D mode?

Yea, I tried that too. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Not a problem. Thanks for the heads up with 3D content on them BTW as well. Something I will look out for, however, my next set more than likely is OLED which handles it in passive more often than not.

yeah but if games could run at even a slightly higher resolution than 1080p that would still be slightly better than a regular ass 1080p image upscaled to 4k

that's kinda the theme of this whole console: slightly better

If it doesn't, then that might be the one of the stupidest moves yet by Sony. In fact, I believe that the sole purpose of existence for the Neo is to push the sales of 4K TV and content. And 4K Bluray is a big part of that.

Actually I disagree with this.

4k Content is limited.
Both in content, and video games.

That would be a bold gamble to create niche system for a small percentage of people who would be able to take advantage of it.

Rather Ps4.5 will be able to stream 4k content ala netflix.

I could also be wrong, but you'd assume in this leak that would be a pretty big deal.

Are you talking console only? Because with a good enough Rig you can take almost any game and output to 4k. So for video games, there is a ton of content since almost every game can have it's resolution changed to 4k...whether you can achieve 60fps and 4k is a tough one and is a game per game basis type of thing. Some I can easily do it, others are very tough.

Philips Dolby Vision HDR 65PFL8601/F7 $1,699.99US July 2016. That means it should hit $1200-$1300 street relatively quickly.

Supposedly this TV will use the same panels as the Vizio-P series.

I read several reviews that Sony tv's aren't that good especially because of the software. Android tv seems to run like shit and the whole interface feels sluggish according to reviews.
What I would want is a

- true 200 hz panel
- non curved
- hdr compatible

I don't even know if there are already 200 hz 4k panels available though.
Yeah seriously, I hate these curved TVs. Terrible idea.

Vizio on to something with Google cast integration.

better app support as they don't need to rely on development for their own platform.

I thought it was all but confirmed that the PS4.5 will not have a the ability to play 4k blu, am I wrong?

I think it's almost a given. This machine is designed for 4K TVs.

Of course high-capacity Blu-rays won't be used for games as those still have to fit into a BD-50 for BC with the original PS4

All samsungs overscan by default. ou also have to pick the native hd aspect ratio manually.

Back in the day? I believe these oxygen thiefs were spouting this shite in 2013

Oh, wow. Do people still believe the stuff? You can very easily tell the difference between 1080 P and 1440 P at 27 inches it is not hard.

On the subject of 4K games: some 2-D content may end up at 4K. Imagine if supergiant studios' (Transistor, Bastion) next game, pyre, had a very high resolution (background and character) textures. If I didn't already have a QHD monitor that kind of thing would be tempting to me because the art is so pretty.

Do people actually think games will be native 4K on 'Neo'?

Not gonna happen. Not with those specs it sure as hell aint.

That being said, 4k TVs have reduced drastically in price, so no harm no foul I guess.

Learned some good models from this thread, was looking into getting one myself for my living room, but yeah, def. not for assuming games will be native 4k.

I guess I'd just make sure your tv supports both hdr formats. Though I guess the Neo will be on tne hdr10 side given Sonys existing support.

Does 1080p on 4k look as bad as 720p on 1080p?

I have a Vizio M series and it looks pretty good to me.

Also PS4K/NEO isn't reported as having a UHD bluray player if I remember correctly.

So OP my at minimum be better 4K content through streaming which I personally believe to be equal to a bluray/uncompressed 1080p source

I'm not getting a 4K TV until at least 2017.

The HDR standard hasn't been fully implemented in every current 4KTV from my understanding.

People really are stupid...

No. 4K is exactly 4x the resolution of 1080p. If you've seen a PSP game on the Vita, you'd know what to expect.

No. It's not.

4k is approximately four kilo (thousand) pixels across. It's roughly double the resolution of 1080p, though it's of a completely different aspect ratio.

Why would you get a 40 inch 4K screen tho.

It'd be next to impossible to see any kind of difference. You really need a bigger screen to take make the most of any perceptible advantage.

This is entirely wrong. Screen size only comes into play when determining how far from the display you wish to sit. 4k is 4k.

why would you get a 4k tv that small?

Why question your superiors?

Isn't it 2 million pixels vs 8 million, hence the 4k moniker?

If it comes out. I still have last years Panasonic the 850U and it is a fantastic set. The new DX900 looks great, but still no mention on when and if it will come to North America. It released in Europe and Japan, but that is about it. Last years Panasonic was only sold by ONE US Retailer called Value Electronics out of New York. If you live in the U.S. your only choice to buy last years Panasonic was direct through them or Value Electronics.

I am not really sure what is going with them this year. I was waiting for them to release it, but they have not and the new Sony 940d FALD just released within the last 2 weeks and I decided to get that instead.

Did not know that. Shame if it doesn't make it over here.

So how does the 940d stack up to it?

Both 1080p and 4K are 16:9. There are different types of 4K, but those used in TVs and consumer monitors will still conform to standard 16:9.

I believe they are rounding up the horizontal pixels to get to 4K, so 1080p would be 2K using this nomenclature.

speaking of 4k native res. not scaling.

4K has basically 4x as many pixels because both horizontally and vertically it is double the size of 1920x1080. You can fit 4 lots of 1920x1080 inside a 4K resolution, more or less. It is not incorrect to say that 4K is 4 times the resolution of 1080p. It just depends on how you're defining it, really. It makes sense either way.

4K did not get its name because it is 4 times the resolution of 1080p though. It is a K, not an X. The 4K comes from its horizontal pixel count, for sure.

Do people actually think games will be native 4K on 'Neo'?

Even if the AAA games don't reach 4K they could still reach 1440p which you will still need to upgrade your TV to get the most out of.

Is Sony and Samsung still considered the best?

I usually go with Panasonic but they seem less common these days.
