By Federal Law, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker are officially "mediocre and schlocky".

I just can’t believe they made this trilogy without sketching out the overarching plot. They set up all these things in Force Awakens only to allow Rian Johnson to say “forget all that” in the Last Jedi. Then they basically turned Rise of Skywalker into Dragonball Z at the end with the Emperor shooting laser beams into space.

It really can't be said enough that Rise of Skywalker was one of the worst huge budget films ever made, maybe the worst considering the franchise history and the backing it had, while The Last Jedi was for some reason attempting to be a comedy written by a completely unfunny person.

It needed the Vong. We would have at least seen the New Republic and Luke's new order in action.

I think a slightly different adaptation of the old EU would have been better.

1st film is Luke and the Solo twins dealing with the Imperial Remnant/Thrawn.

2nd film Jacen turns at the end. Luke possibly dies (slain by Jacen? Paralleling the Vader v Ben fight)

3rd film: Jaina v Jacen. Parallels the family inner conflict of Luke v Vader, but it’s bro vs sis. Slays Jacen. Thrawn beaten in space battle vs New Repub.

I missed RoS. So did they basically set it up like Zelda where at the end of every game the hero always fights Ganon and have at the end of every trilogy the hero will always fight Palpatine?

The Star Trek restart is also shit though, just less so. JJ is just all over terrible.
What's funny is that even in 2009 I thought that movie was "meh" and and it didn't capture the spirit of Star Trek, but I also thought that the formula would've worked better with Star Wars. That's why I ended up enjoying The Force Awakens, as it at least hit some of those fantasy/adventure beats that I knew JJ could handle. It wasn't perfect, but it didn't prove that JJ was incompetent.

All downhill after that.

Sort of. It was the most fan faction plot to a major movie I’ve ever seen. They shoehorned in the Emperor literally out of nowhere. I challenge anyone to show me where they alluded to the Emperor in either of the previous movies. He basically just jumps out from behind a curtain, they basically try retcon him as being there the whole time, and by the end (I’m completely not kidding) he’s shooting force lightning into space to bring down a fleet of starships.

What time is it?
Star Wars has always been dreck, they've just continually done a worse and worse job in casting characters exposing how shit it really is.

The trilogy was built on a foundation of shit with the force awakens. It needed a new threat, not a rehash of empire Vs. resistance.

Yep
I still think the trilogy would have been way better if they had actually planned it out, but TFA was already a bad start anyway.
As a movie at least I liked it better than both TLJ and Rise of Skywalker. But it was just so extremely creatively bankrupt for a big Star Wars Sequel (which is sort of a JJ trademark).

The Prequels were bad but at least they showed a new side of the star wars world. We got to see big cities, the Jedi Council, a ton of cool new locations, new types of enemies in the form of various droids, etc.

In TFA it's like they went out of their way so nothing would be new or different. "What is the world like 30 years after Return of the Jedi?....Pretty much exactly the same as at the beginning of a new hope"

"All downhill after that" best describes JJ Abram's career in cinema following his first couple episodes of LOST.

The VONG? That was when I stopped being interested in the old EU. The problem is if they wanted to do anything with Luke George should have done Episode VII in the early 90’s instead of making The Thrawn Trilogy and Dark Empire into comics and books. George should have just tried to get Filoni into a position of power before selling out to Disney. It’s literally taken Disney like what 8 years to realize “holy shit this Filoni guy and Favreau actually know how to run a franchise better than Bob Iger.”

Damage is done with the sequels but I’m way more interested in Star Wars on the small screen At this point. They have to work within a budget like George did back in the day and it feels way more star warsy than anything Abrams produced.

The thing about TFA is that it posed a bunch of questions with no answers. TLJ actually answered those questions, but a lot of people didn't like those answers. Then based on Twitter & Reddit feedback, TROS went and retroactively CHANGED those answers and made TLJ look like even more of a dead end for some characters *cough Finn*. That's not how serial storytelling works, and we'd be in a better state had they just used Trevorrow's script for IX with minor tweaks to compensate for Leia's dearth of screen time.

Also come on, Star Wars has been prime anime influence since the beginning and vice versa. It's just that Palpatine returning with a sea of undead ships is so goddamn stupid it's taking 3 whole TV series to put a band aid over the holes.

Films by committee.. epitome of a early 10s trend in companies thinking that the brand and merch alone will still bushels and the content is immaterial.. cynical crap...

Anyone seeing Return of the Jedi should have seen Jar Jar in the ewoks. George was just keeping it real. He thought a bloodless 90s shooter was "so violent", did we really think the prequels were gonna be Gladiator in space? At least he had a more or less coherent plot spanning the trilogy!

Disney... no such luck ...

Ps. While i love the EU and Thrawn in particular, he has a pretty clear finality to his arc which would take a lot of the intrigue out of any plots built around him to last an entire trilogy.
