C&C3: Kane's Wrath (out now, RA3 beta keys included!)

Cc3kw-win-cover.jpg

So yeah this hit the stores for the PC today (xbox 360 version is due in June). Some of the vital details:

*) 13 mission NOD campaign spanning three different time periods-the time after the events of Tiberium Sun: Firestorm, the events right before C&C3, and the events after the end of C&C3.
*) A new "Global Campaign" single player mode where you can play Scrin, NOD, or Global Defense Initiative, conquering cities and territories, building persistent bases and armies, similar to the risk-like campaigns in Rise of Nations, or the War of the Ring campaigns in the BFME games. There has been some pretty postitive buzz about what they put together for this mode, it looks really nice.
*) Two subfactions for each of three sides for multiplayer and skirmish:

GDI-Steel Talons, and even more mechanized/armor focused GDI with limited infantry.
GDI-ZOCOM, a more elite infantry oriented GDI approach.
NOD-Black Hand-NOD infantry zerg w/ some brute force impact armor, no air or stealth units.
NOD-Marked of Kane-Empahsis on stealth and exotic weaponry.
Scrin-Reaper 17-Ground pounding assualt forces at the cost of air power.
Scrin-Traveler 59-Mind controller units, infantry, cheap air power.

The base GDI/NOD/Scrin factions are still there with some new units of their own. Each of the subfactions also has new units.

*) Each side has epic uber units ala DOW.

*) Same FMV silliness with Kucan back as Kane, Natasha Henstridge, and some other duder who I don't recognize in NOD.

*) For a limited time after release, every copy of Kane's Wrath will have a beta code for the upcoming Red Alert 3.

Definitely a solid expansion on paper, probably one of the most ambitiious I've seen since DOW: Dark Crusade back in 2006. Worries of imba aside, I'm really looking forward to this, and hope that the early year gravy train of RTS games (Sins, Soulstorm, now this) keeps on trucking through the spring and summer.

It does sound nice. Will be getting this version in a week or two.

I meant to pick up the original, after seeing how well the demo ran, but never got around to it, but with all the recent RTS news/releases, I'm starting to pick up more interest in the genre again.

More info on the RA3 beta thing:

Q: How do I get into the Red Alert 3 Beta Program?

A: By purchasing a copy of Command & Conquer™ 3: Kane's Wrath that has a "C&C Red Alert 3 Beta Key" callout or sticker, you will have the opportunity to enter into the RA3 Beta Key program. Each copy of Kane’s Wrath with the Beta Callout will have an insert to enter into the RA3 Beta Program and a unique code. If you visit the designated website on the insert, enter your unique code and user information before September 15, 2008. You will be entered into the beta queue. The sooner you register on the website, the higher your place in the beta queue.

Q: Is the RA3 Beta Key Program Tied to Preordering Kane’s Wrath?

A: No, but the sooner you purchase Kane’s Wrath and register online for the beta key (by following the instructions on the Beta Key insert) the more likely you are to get access to the Beta before anyone else

Q: If I purchase Kane's Wrath, am I guaranteed into the Red Alert 3 Beta Program?

A: If you purchase a copy of Kane’s Wrath and/or the Command & Conquer 3 Limited Collection that contains the Red Alert3 Beta Key sticker or callout, you will be guaranteed a spot into the Red Alert 3 Beta if you register on the website before September 15, 2008 (see insert for specific instructions).

So make sure you see the sticker. They should all have it at this point.

So is this actually in stores today or tomorrow?

the best buys have it in around me. Not sure about circuit city but that place is generally run by the worst employees ever.

You might even be able to find a rogue copy in a target. When I was hunting down a copy of AoE3:TAD last year, I found one just put on the shelfs whose SKU wasn't even activated in the system yet. :lol

I don't shop at ebgames, they might have it but have fun buying a PC GAME WITH A KEY that's been gutted, no fucking thanks.

EIGHTEEN DOLL HAIRS AT CIRCUIT CITY TODAY.

Work. Must. End.

fyi to anyone-

17.99$@ Frys too

too good to pass up :)

I just hope there will be a shit load of people playing online at least until RA3..

Has anyone here been able to find this at a Circuit City today? I don't want to drive all the way out to the nearest store only to find that it's not there.

(I tried calling, the guy who picked up had no idea what I was talking about)

edit: It's in stock. Got my key, too.

C&C3 multi is horrible. Find a match vid of the recent $5k tourney for laughs (and lots of rocket infantry)

But I love C&C cheese video, so I'll actually be getting this purely to screw around with the SP campaign (gasp!) and giant mega units of pointlessness. If I can find it cheap anyway. No fry's around here :(

I'm probably going to have to wait a month to get this, I'm in the middle of building a new house and I'm going to be living in my 20' trailer with no internet access for a few weeks, starting next week so....

I got it, for some reason the beta key registration site isn't even up. Does the registration not start till a later date or something?

Impressions?

anyone played through the SP yet?

As for impressions it's pretty hard to give. I mean it's C&C3. If you haven't played since the first one launched or only played the 360 version then you should be made aware that they have completely rebalanced the game through patches, essential making it a completely different game.

Big differences (and these were present pre Kane's Wrath, just a quick summation of stuff they changed):
- Infantry are very very useful now, tanks are wildly ineffective against them short of running them over. This is very much old school C&C and a welcome change from the way it was at launch.
- Flame units absolutely massacre infantry and buildings now, whereas before they did jack shit.
- Mammoth tanks are less effective against air units and in general are far less of a be all end all unit.
- Avatars are better.
- Lots of other various tweaks.

So with all that Kane's Wrath takes the new balance structure and runs with it. I've only played a bit but so far the new units and sub factions fit in very well. Gameplay is largely the same, interface hasn't changed at all nor has the graphics. Again it's kinda hard to review an expansion pack.

Really if you like C&C this is pretty much a no brainer, the global campaign mode alone is worth the cost if you aren't into online play, and if you are then the new units and strategies that come with them are definitely worth it.

EDIT: Just did a quick count and there are 59 multiplayer maps now. Not sure how many there were before, but it was definitely a lot less then that.

This makes me want to start up C&C3 again.

The servers were down or at the very least swamped so I couldn't get online. There are plenty of new units however. Each of the 3 factions have been split into 3 subfactions, so there are 9 playable sides now each with their own unique units and abilities.

Great impressions, much appreciated. I did not pick C&C3 and thought this is the time but I have only one thing in concern; Is it worth the 50$ only for the campaign? (both TW and KW). I don't like playing online, for that I can't deal with humans :p

You've played C&C before right? All the FMV, cheesy action, Kane, and even cameos this time around (like Sawyer from Lost). Everything you've loved about C&C wrapped in a very well performing engine.

Also the separate RISK style game mode/clone of the LotR:BFME take over the world does sound like a lot of fun. I don't know if the dev teams are connected at all, as they're both EA. Basically what I'm saying is that should also offer a lot of value past the campaign for someone not interested in multiplayer.

There is plenty of single player content available split among the 2 games. The skirmish mode AI is surprisingly competent as well.

Was there a balance changelist posted anywhere?

Anyhow, holy shit at the first two missions already. I'm not sure what changed, but I'm using NOD infantry a lot more than previously.

so how do the beta keys work? you register at a site and you get the key? and when will the actual beta be out?

No GDI campaign? I wanted that girl from House to bark random technobabble at me.
"We have to regroup and launch a Tiberium attack on the Scrin!"

*facepalm*

EA spanked this one again, some (a bunch? a few?) of the RA3 beta keys in the early sales aren't working. Hard to tell how many, but there are a bunch of pissed off people on the official forums and gr.org. Mine doesn't work either, though I don't really fall into the pissed off camp ($18 KW, RA3 key was just a bonus)

My key doesn't work. :(
But yeah don't really care. Not really interested in a beta of an EA rts. Still...way to go EA!

There's a sticky on the KW boards at EA that there might be some backend server problems regarding the RA3 beta key. So it might just be a bug on their end.

Got my copy today and the RA3 beta key was accepted fine, only done the Conquest Mode tutorial and one skirmish against Easy AI, just wanted to see the new units. Some of the new units seem pretty awesome like the giant Hexapod, and the Mechapede.

Just need to convince a few mates to buy it and then go have some fun online.

PS. NOD airpower is absolute shit now. GDI anti-air just rips apart Venoms, leaving only Vertigoes as the only option.

OTOH, NOD infantry is awesome... until you go against ZOCOM and hit a brick wall with their sonic splash attacks.

If you don't have a CC in your area, Amazon also has the game on sale for $18...

I just got to Act II yesterday, it really pissed me off the mission before Act II where you have to destory that certain structure, my people attacked it automatically when I wanted to move out and complete the secondary objective. The building couldn't even attack them so I dunno why they would auto fire...

Ooh, just saw someone's made a utility to convert the game from addon to standalone. I've already bought the original on 360 so this would be very useful for me. Which direction does the GAF moral compass point on this one?
