CA is experiencing a heat wave, our Batman villain Governor still has the state on lockdown, now they're cutting the power

It does to some extent. Always. But when you are born with that much privilege/with a famous parent... it doesn't take much.

I agree, but the rebuttal that Scott Adams mustn’t be an idiot because he’s wealthy doesn’t really fly. There are countless examples of rich idiots. That’s all I was really getting at

Yeah. What a jackass. Expecting the state with an economy bigger than most countries to have a functional power grid. Of course, rather than engage with that reality, it’s always easier to just attack the guy pointing it out. Doesn’t keep the lights on though.
Yep - one of the things the Tories used to take the piss out of Labour for was how in the 70s we used to have a lot of power outages etc - it’s what happens when you live in a socialist shithole I guess.

Nah there are plenty of reasons to think he’s an idiot. California occasionally gets over capacity when it has extreme heat waves. To use that to say it’s a failed state and every politician needs to be fired is idiotic, which Scott Adams says...because he’s an idiot.

Room for improvement? Sure. Failed state? Stupid.

When you plan and build infrastructure you build in the ability to handle regularly-occurring events. If this is happening every year then someone did not do that. You design to the requirements - so you also need shit to be earthquake-proof for instance due to location. I presume if that was fucked too you’d give that a free pass?

Btw all this debate over whether he’s an idiot... whatever happened to debating the point and not the person? Even an idiot can accidentally make a good point and Einstein probably didn’t get everything right. Better to take each point on merit.

I’m not arguing that the infrastructure isn’t inadequate or needs to be improved, it obviously does when it can’t meet the needs of the state as you pointed out. I just don’t think this particular hot take is insightful or even true with its hyperbolic nature, and just pointing out that Adams is dumb (because he has a history of saying dumb things) seemed like a quick way to get the point across.

Is it untrue to say that a state that can't keep the power on is a failed state? Britain in the 70s had that issue and at that time was known as the sick man of Europe - a near-failed state, in part due to the strikes and other union shenanigans crippling the economy. I have a friend in South Africa who was a bit fed up that there were rolling blackouts - South Africa is effectively a failed state given the murder rate, the desperate state of the economy, etc. California is on the level of South Africa.

Ultimately if this happens every damn year then yes it's a failed state, or at the very least a huge failure of the state (and if you couple that with needles and shit on the streets etc it's hard to argue against it being a failed state). Someone needs to damn well take responsibility for that in a state swimming in cash - the idea that you let things carry on as is seems ludicrous to me. As for Scott Adams - I have no idea who the fuck he is but on this one he's right. Who knows, maybe he's a cunt, but he's a correct cunt.

The level of failure here does not equate to a failed state. It’s a fuckup that California can’t meet its power needs on rare occasions that heat waves overwhelm the grid. Also, the rolling blackouts don’t take the whole state down, which is one of the biggest economies in the world. The idea that it’s a failed state or on the level of South Africa is fucking absurd. Rolling blackouts suck and aren’t ideal by any means, but to act like this means California is some failure on a whole is to have a complete lack of perspective. It’s an issue that needs to be resolved, but it’s not some indictment of the entire state, and Scott Adams is an idiot for trying to claim it is

You seem remarkably defensive about what is a thoroughly unacceptable situation. Maybe just as you needed to call someone an idiot to get the point across he needed to call it a failed state ;)

This is why you invest in a generator, people. It's almost a requirement of living on the west coast.
I've got three on hand for various purposes.

this is so obvious. Are the rest of you stupid and complaining?

Don't be like that. In either direction.
If you haven't invested in one in the past, now's a good time to consider doing so. Statistics show that a hair over half of the people who buy generators are getting them for outdoor purposes. This means prices tend to drop going into the Fall (this is regional, of course). So it's a good time to look into a model in your price range.

At this point California is held together with duct tape and human shit. It's more and more evident when you go into the big cities. Hell, even medium sized cities of 100,000+ are seeing the same kind of issues.

When you take into account things like the high tax rates mixed with the insane wealth it really makes you wonder where the hell does all this money go? The true acceleration of the shit show started to become evident in 2008 and it's only sped up since.

All I see here is a bunch of conservatives trying to take an unfortunate situation and extrapolate it to some ridiculous giant thing that has no basis in reality. Then when they get called out on it call others defensive.

Show me how many threads you’ve made out the terrible water situation in Flint from Republicans. That is an actual source able mistake directly from one party and is much more a humanitarian crisis and failed state that STILL years later hasn’t been fixed and is a much cheaper fix than an entire electric grid. I’m guessing zero threads and zero posts. Am I right?

California isn’t even top 10 in effective tax rates.

Go make a thread then. I'd not heard about it - it's not been on the news and I've not seen anything on social media so how am I expected to make a thread for something I don't know about? Clearly you're in the know, so go and post it.

California isn’t even top 10 in effective tax rates.
That’s a pretty misleading chart. If you look at the bottom, it’s calculating all that based on the median household income for the United States, which is $60,000 and owning a $204,000 house. My understanding of California is that both income and cost of living are significantly higher than in most of the states. Property values are astronomical for example. So those taxes would be significantly higher in California than other places.

Then there is the fact it is the most over regulated state in the country. If you’re fortunate enough to own property, there are absurd hoops you have to jump through to build anything on it, which the government takes a cut of. It’s not solely about tax rates.

I think you missed the point entirely of what I said. And if you haven’t heard about it, it’s been posted here and all over the web. It’s a continuing crisis. A real crisis not like this nothing of a brown out that has already been called off. All this big talk about something that didn’t even happen😂

Your edit just shows your politics which is was my entire point of the previous post. You don’t care about anything but grandstanding about some problem a lib state is having bc you disagree with the 60% that vote democratic.

So you’re upset people aren’t talking about something that was discovered in 2014 and appears, by your own article, to have been basically resolved in 2018? Am I getting this right?

No you’re missing the point. And I the costs are far from over.

my point is a lot of posters here aremaking a mountain out of a mole hill and here is an example of a real crisis by comparison. But you won’t see them talking about it because it’s a black eye on conservatives and the love affair with de regulation.

All over the web or just where you look? Shockingly I've not looked at every post here, so shoot me. Now if there are water supply issues then yep, that's fucked up. Water and electric are basic things that any functioning civilised state should be able to maintain supply for in most circumstances. If they fail, that's bad news. Not quite sure what the fuck you're on about re edit and grandstanding, but if it makes you happy to have a non-sequitur rant then be my guest. It's unfortunate how so many far left people can't argue for shit. Btw don't assume my politics. I believe in universal healthcare for instance, which in the US would probably put me way to the left. We all have a mix of positions on different issues, some left, some right, and those that don't are unstable extremists best avoided.

The point is

Ironic that you stop at "the point is".. I suspect even you don't know at this point. You were offered an opportunity to debate gracefully and to make your own thread about the topic but claimed it already exists but can't find it and expect us to all be psychic and know about everything happening in the world.

The California power grid isn’t a mole hill. Between their struggles to deliver service during critical times and the massive fires they have caused, I’d say it’s a big deal.

It’s a mole hill compared to real crisis like I’ve already said. This is more like a need to have money spent on it and is slightly uncomfortable. The fires were sourced to a private electric company that’s public ally traded not the govt FYI.

Now I’m “the left”😂. Thanks for proving my point. I’m a conservative. Didn’t vote trump but that’s because I have morals.
Again the brown outs didn’t even happen. So you can put your pitchfork down and feel silly for pretty much everything you said. It’s a side effect of them pushing for green power and they need to balance it out.
Like I’ve already said if you ever were in California in the 80s you’d know why they are so pro green. The air could get to be unbreathable in the cities. Instead of popping off about the left or my arguing tactics how about looking into the things you claim to be upset about without all the bs hot takes.

Nov 3, 2019 · Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power lines have caused more than 1,500 California wildfires in the past six years

So... no.

that's exactly what you think. That is why you brought her up.

To answer your question: I’m not an engineer. I’ve worked with dozens over the years, some much dumber than me and some much smarter. I can usually tell where I stand pretty quickly, and I like meeting people smarter than me because I think I can learn something. Scott Adams doesn’t have anything to teach me

Scott Adams is criticizing California politicians in a hyperbolic fashion. You are more concerned with what a cartoonist says, than the rolling blackouts in the state of California. Scott may be dumb, but atleast he has his fucking priorities straight, and knows who to blame. You clearly don't.

this is so obvious. Are the rest of you stupid and complaining?
This is not a requirement on any other western state. Why is that?

I experienced rolling blackouts in California when I grew up there. I’ve stated in this thread they’re not ideal and a fuckup. What I’ve tried to explain is that, in perspective, they’re not *that* big of a deal and calling California a failed state is ridiculous. I’m not sure why you think I’m so worried about it, I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal at the end of the day. Been there, experienced it, it’s obnoxious and then the power is back on in a few hours.

Also Scott Adams is an idiot.

Tell that to the small businesses that were already getting fucked over or the people that rely on medical devices to live comfortably. The rotating power outages suck ass and at this point it's turning into splitting hairs over the semantics of if it's a failed state or not. Scott Adams is obviously trying to be provocative.

The fact of the matter is this is the 5th largest economy in the world with shitloads of tax revenue but we somehow have a wholly unreliable power grid. California is becoming a worse place to live by the day and the power grid is just one of many issues that hasn't even been addressed, let alone solved
