I'm moving to the OC soon too, most likely Irvine, Newport Beach, or Costa Mesa. Where's the best Asian food in the area?

Probably driving to Garden Grove or Westminster. The Irvine, Newport, CM area has some decent stuff but its either Americanized chains like Pei Wei, or higher end boutique restaurants that cost a lot. If you want authentic, cheap Asian food.. look west.

There's a whole lot to choose from, whether you like Americanized Asian or authentic. Personally, I'm the kind of guy who goes to Pei Wei once a week, but there's a bevy of other options. A place on the Newport coast called Ho Sum Bistro is really good. A place in Costa Mesa called Al Palace also veers toward the more authentic and is quite good. If you don't mind paying a lot, there's a Japanese place on the border of Newport and Irvine called Kitayama which is amazing. Then you have a bunch of places in the heart of Irvine that have super authentic Asian food, where no one there speaks English and nothing on the menu is in English. And there are some places to get Pho too if that's your thing.

I would advise the highlighted area ;)

Heh, lot of people here from the Irvine/Tustin area. Kind of surprised, don't usually see people from Tustin online.

$2,000 won't get you something in the nice beach parts unless you want a tiny little 1 bedroom. Beach cities are ridiculously overpriced. Irvine is overpriced. Costa Mesa is hip and more affordable but a bit run down. Santa Ana/Anaheim will get you stabbed/shot at night in the wrong parts. Orange is a little better. Lake Forest is a little less boring than Irvine but also should be cheaper. Tustin is plain but affordable.

My friends were on the Tustin/Irvine bordline and a 2bdr rent was about $1800 a month. Otoh, I had a friend who had a sweet place in Costa Mesa/Newport Beach border for $1200 a month a couple of years ago.

Basically I'd stay out of the more shady parts and look for something you're happy with that's around $1600-2000 a month. Everything isn't all too far from each other thanks to the freeways. You can get to a beach from pretty much anywhere in 30 mins or to a mall or Disneyland.

I think irvine is supposed to be one of the safest cities in the nation. There are a bunch of cities in the oc though (Fullerton, Anaheim, Brea, all the way down to San Clemente). You should probably let us know what else you'd be looking for other than "nice"
Also one of the most boring. There's a lot of nice places in the oc that aren't so boring. I like Fullerton personally.

It's not San Diego weather, but most parts of downtown and SOMA are generally nice. Sunset and the Richmond get chilly at night and are foggy in the morning.

there are plenty of places in the bay where you can hit that 115 Degree weather if you want.

also I never understood the big billboards in San Fran advertising San Diego as a vacation spot.. why not jsut go down to Santa Cruz?

I'd suggest Santa Ana. Near downtown. Its becoming a new Silver Lake. Also the cheapest area in OC. It is a bit more rundown and prone to crime, but its getting better everyday.

If you go for Costa Mesa, go to East Side Costa Mesa. West Side is eh.

A little more Echo Park than Silver Lake, eh? I had heard in the five years since I moved away that Echo Park had gentrified but I didn't see it when I drove through there when I was visiting back in November.

I dunno. I agree Santa Ana was heading in that direction a few years ago, but it feels like the popularity's dying off and downtown/art walk area is losing a lot of the local artists that were helping it grow. Not really sure what's going to happen there.

But I agree it's a lot better than it used to be. Still gotta be careful at night though.

Its more Sunset and the north of Sunset area that has heavily gentrified. It'll be a bit slower moving down to the actual park area.

As mentioned by others Garden Grove is good. I prefer Japanese and Korean food, so parts of Costa Mesa and random spots all over Irvine/Tustin/Aliso Viejo have good places to eat.

We rent a house in Quail Hill in Irvine after moving from the east coast as well. It's a bit pricy, but the fact that my bf can walk or bike to work is lovely. Cause they aren't kidding about the hellacious rush hour traffic.

Irvine is a bit boring and safe, but we can get to the beach cities like Laguna to eat or hang out easy enough. Sadly renting there is beyond our pay grade, and buying a house would be laughable.
