Calibrating a TV

My sister will be out of town for at least 6 months, and she gave me permission to use her apartment as I please, so I moved my 5.1 DVD setup to her place in order to use it on her TV which is bigger than mine (21" Vs 32"+, both non-HDTV SONY WEGA), I hooked it up using component video cables (I was using S-Video on mine, since mine has RGB instead of component and the DVD player doesn't output RGB), first thing I did was pop-in the Digital Video Essentials disc to try and fine-tune the Brightness, Contrast, Color, Sharpness, etc values properly, after spending a good amount of time trying to do that, I realized that this TV is either a piece of shit, has taken an insane amount of abuse, or [hopefully] is just badly calibrated. It's sad when movies look better on my TV with S-Video than they do on this bigger set with Component. Mine's a European model by the way, while the other one is Asian.

So my question is: Should I bother digging up how to access the hidden "Service Menu" for the TV and try to fiddle with all the scary numbers and values to improve the picture? Is there a good online guide I can use for reference? Any other advice?
