Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - DF face-off

Isn't PS3 pretty good at MLAA (or whatever they used on GOW3)? Why don't they use that? It couldn't be any worse than what they ended up with.

PS3 was always a capable machine but having an exotic architecture only works out when your way in the lead and publisher/developers are willing to go the extra mile when creating games on your platform. I can't wait for the x86 consoles next gen. There won't be a need for half-assed compromises on multiplatform releases unless MS or Sony made poor hardware choices.

It's not like they don't have the money...

The PS3 is running at the same resolution as the iPhone 4 screen.

The PS Vita has a resolution of 960x544. Maybe the mixed up the games and this was supposed to be the PS Vita version of Call of Duty, and Declassified was actually a browser game.

Edit: Oh that was Black Ops 1.

Reminds me of the Crysis 2 blur.

I played it on PC at 1366x768 with everything in low, but the PS3 version definitely looked stretched and far more blurry, I couldn't see the enemies sometimes.

I recall MW2 not being that awful on the PS3.

Can't they just keep the jaggies and up the native res? That would be a better trade off. Who cares about reducing jaggies when the result is such a terribly blurry image?

I believe it requires extensive use of many of the SPU's, maybe they are using them all already.
Or maybe it doesn't work well with the types of environment that is in the game.

Or maybe they just suck, heck if I know.

Not seeing much difference at all between the PC and 360 shot being referenced.

For the next year or so it's going to be fun seeing the comparisons include the Wii U as well.

also check the other pictures in the comparison, the low resolution really shows. the last two in particular.

None of the IW games are awful on PS3.

The old Infinity Ward were awesome and made sure both versions were awesome even back in 2007. It's unacceptable that in 2012 Treyarch are still not doing the PS3 version justice.

Yeah, but it's still pathetic.

Sure, but there really aren't that many 60 hz fps' around. There is Rage, that on X360 stays at 720p most of the time, but it is pretty graphically simple. No self shadowing etc.

A frame in BO2 is being rendered in half the time as a frame in Halo 4 or Killzone 3.

It isn't good, but it is most certainly understandable. What isn't understandable however is the god awful blur in the PS3 version.

It's not like they don't have the money...

They have the money for sure, they just don't have the incentive, apparently. I'm not saying Activision isn't to blame here, but the PS3 is setup in a poor position because it requires special attention to tap it's potential but doesn't have the massive userbase the PS2 had to help justify the cost for the bean counters.

Considering how Black Ops turned out, I really didn't expect much out of Treyarch. IW and essentially whats left of IW didn't push out their CODs like this on PS3.

I realize this was pretty much the same as blops 1.

Was it this bad though?

I play on pc so i really have no idea how bad it is in motion.

Skyrim? or was that just performance.
Skyrim has pretty bad anti-aliasing on the PS3 as well that blurs many details, but not even near as bad as Black Ops 2.
Still I hope they'll give the option to simply deactivate AA. I'd rather take jaggies over that image quality :/ Same for Black Ops 2.
I don't understand why any developer would even think that this is a good solution o.O

Holy shit does the PS3 version look absolutely awful. Not only does the 360 version look crispier and much more detailed, but it's doing so with a much better framerate too.

This whole post is void because the Modern Warfare games on PS3 are about as good as the 360 ones. The only reason for this is that Treyarch are cluefucks.

PS3 version looks absolutely disgusting.

And to think I was going to get it along with the PC version to play with a couple of friends

Needless to say: nope.

Yeah I got PS3 version and the very first thing that hit me was how bad it looked. Im really enjoying the game regardless and the performance is much smoother than the original BOPS. But damn it is distractingly ugly compared to the 360 version and older COD games, everything looks very blurry or smudged.

They really should offer an option to turn off the post-process anti-aliasing present in this game on PS3. Or at least patch it so it doesn't smear the entire screen.

And yet Infinity Ward figures out how to put out quality ports on the PS3 and they've been doing it since the very first game they released on the console. There's no excuse for bullshit like this.

Native full HD vs sub-HD and laughable AA...

Yeah the choice is obvious for those who invest in PC gaming.

Can some other PS3 players please test something and chip in with your findings?

Go into Game Data Utility in the XMB and delete the 1.02 patch.

Boot up the game and press circle when it asks to download the patch so it loads without installing it.

Now, is it my ageing eyes playing tricks on me or is the blur filter all but gone?

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the patch a few times now to test, and I'm 100% convinced there's a pretty substantial difference. I'm all but convinced there's something in the patch that wreaks havoc on the AA solution or something and causes the excess softness...

To quote myself from the official thread.

Treyarch need to repatch the game and correct whatever screwed up the AA in the last patch. And DF need to retest the PS3 version.

Seriously PS3 owners, try it.

Looks like that comparison image from a few days ago was legit

I've never seen a PS3 game look that blurry. It's ridiculous.

I said wow.

Hope there's a wii u comparison update since that's the sku i'll be getting :-D

360 is 880x720
PS3 is 864x720

It's not really clear from your bolding in the op. Still pathetically low. It looks like they just plastered a gaussian blur over the PS3 version.

Resolution is not the problem here that shitty custom AA solution is, Blops 2 actually pushes more pixels than the previous games that run at 1024/1040*600 and the 360 version has clearly better IQ than the previous games due to the higher vertical res.

Seriously, they have to be doing that shit on purpose. Like some sinister requirement of the 360 DLC exclusivity deal which also includes making the PS3 version look very unappealing.

Well I wouldn't go that far but sometimes I don't understand what some devs were thinking...does this "AA solution" looked good to the guys at Treyarch? just like Portal 2 on 360 which had that awful blur edge filter and fucked up the game's IQ, I'm pretty confident that having no AA at all it would've been a better decision.

Devs need to learn that a blur filter is never acceptable in games. Never. If you think "maybe we could just BLUR the whole screen" you are wrong.

Have you posted this anywhere else? Might try reaching out to Sony or Treyarch's twitter feed if this is accurate and no place else picks up on it.
