Calling all DS owners: How's the screen holding up?

I'm interested in buying one within about the next week or so, but worries about the screen scratching up. How's everyone's screen holding up? Any scratches? Also is there any god screen protectors on the market out there? I figure those non sticky static things you put on windows for like, holdiay decorations or whatever would be a great thing to protect the DS screen. Anyone know if their out there on the market? Thanks.

sometimes I think it has gotten scratched but then later it doesn't appear, probably after a few swipes...

it's taken heavy use from my little sister and little cousins, me, as well as everyone I lend it to (and I'm very generous), but so far it's in great condition, don't notice anything permanent on either screen...

Mine is holding up well. No scratches as of yet, even though my 3 year old boy managed to get ahold of it a few times.

I have one minor scratch on the bottom touch screen, but it's basically indetectable unless you're looking hard.

Mine is holding up very well, I am very careful with my things though. There was one incident when I was playing Feel the magic on the subway. The train suddenly shook violently I jabbed the touch screen with the stylus pretty hard thankfully there was no damage to it.

If you buy a DS at this point, you're going to be better off than someone who bought one at the launch. There were two versions of the bottom screen at launch, but now only the wax-coated version can still be found on store shelves.

I bought my DS at lauch can you further elaborate on the shortcomings of the lauch DS?

How can I tell if I got the wax coated version?

I play mine a few times a week. Maybe a combined total of 2-3 hours a week. It is holding up well and does not have any permanent scratches at the moment. I'm worried though because I've seen the demo units at game stores and they're completely fucked. I'd be real interested in hearing of any screen protectors out there that are worth a damn.

It's been fine. My friend and I play a lot of Wario Ware Touched! and I played a lot of the Super Mario 64 DS mini games. Just when I think it's scratched, I'll wipe it and it'll be fine.

Still, I'm thinking of getting screen protectors as a precautionary measure.

Mine is fine. Had it since it launched. Been playing it with Wario and another stylus heavy game, Feel the magic, and my screen is fine. I just clean it every so often with a non abrasive cloth, and I have no issues.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not isolated to the DS at my local best buy they have to change demo unit ps2/gc/xbox controllers once in a while because they get destroyed.

I've only really used it for Mario 64, but even then I never bothered with the touch screen and earned all 150 stars with the d-pad.

I did own Feel the Magic for about a day, which did a number on the screen before I sold it. But you'd be hard pressed to notice any scratches or smudges.

If you look close at mine you can see scratches on it, but as soon as you turn on the game you can't see a single thing. They are really minor and are only visible with the game off and tilted in the light a certain way. I started getting these scratches after I bought Wario Ware, which is probably due to the fact that it's so stylus heavy.

In the long run I think the DS will eventually get scratches, especially if you play alot of games like Wario Ware where you frantically scrub the stylus on the screen. I think that the backlight pretty much gets rid of the problem though.

Excellent. Though to be fair:

1. i've got a Brando screen protector on the touchscreen. They washable and provide a little resistance unlike the Teflon-eque DS screen. Feels a little bit more like writing on paper.

2. i use my Clie stylus pen, which seems to be a bit more friendly on touchscreens than the default stylus.

3. i haven't played my DS seriously in a month.

Mine is dirty and dusty (since my thumb sweats when I'm using the strap), but otherwise is okay. Most of the damage on my DS is on the outer case, which is scratched up from being carried all over the place in my pocket

It's unfortunate how some people have trashed the demo units. Both the local ToysRus and Target have had their units scratched to hell, and not just the touch screen, but the main LCD as well. Interestingly enough, you can still play the games normally, alebit with limited visibility. The touch feature doesn't seem to be damaged in any respect.

I have a few "glare scratches", but that's about it, can't see them normally and they don't hinder play at all. Very nice, I should probably get some screen protectors though.

Mines good...no scratches...

Except on the exterior, but that's because my bag was open on the subway and when I stood up it fell out...D'OH!

Works perfectly, though.

Tip-top.

I also just picked up the HORI screen protector(the official one) for 7 bucks at play-asia.com. Aside from being complete fuckers to put on, they're great. I'd highly recommend them.

the gamestop i was at today had finally replaced the metroid prime hunters demo with wario ware and feel the magic. i wanted to try them out, but both touchscreens were busted, one responding erratically and the other not responding at all. what do people do to those poor demo consoles. i wonder whether i'll be able to take the sight of a brutalized psp.

Mine has a few really minor scratches, only visible from an exact angle (not noticable during gameplay). The top screen has a visible scratch, it was my fault though. My R button is halfway fucked though.

yeah, Ive got no scratches.. and Im generally plaing Wario, FTM or the mini games in Mario 64.. so its getting *alot* of scratching motions on it. It does get pretty grimmy pretty easily though.. and Ive often thought Ive scratched it, and it turns out just to be grime/hand oil with smears in it. Gross.

Mine is fairly scratched, so is my g/f's.. I think the version of the DS we got here at launch in Australia is the one that is easier to get scratched. She's gotten herself a screen protector since then, I'm thinking about doing the same.

I must've got a launch DS, too. I have two noticeable curly scratches from Feel the Magic (from playing in the car), and just random scratches all over the place from playing Mario 64 DS. But it's not too bad, I don't think. Just not perfect like everyone else's.

After reading this thread, I really have to offer a cautionary tale about screen protectors.

After a while of heavy Mario 64 DS play, I noticed that I had 2 or 3 light hairline scratches that were probably only "glare scratches" to use someone elses terminology--they weren't visible at all unless I looked sideways across the unit. However, just to be safe, I bought Pelican screen protectors and put them on.

Ever since I put them on, the touch screen has gotten less and less responsive and accurate. I played through much of Chokkan Hitofude (Polarium in JPN) and the more I played, the less playable it became because sometimes my lines would end early or not track correctly. Anyone who has played this game to the upper difficulty levels (700 lines+) knows that one mistake can and will cost you the game.

The scary thing too is that the Pelican protectors came with no directions--it came with a "soft card" tool that I assume is supposed to be for getting the protector off, but trying to take it off carefully has yielded no results whatsoever.

Does anybody else have Pelican protectors? Anyone else had these problems? Any input would be much appreciated--luckily I got an ESA from EB and my friend works there and says he might be able to swap it out for a new one for me, but before I resort to that I'd like to take the protector off...

I haven't used the Pelican protectors, but i have heard some nasty stuff about them. That's partly the reason I went with the HORI, that and excellent response about that one. I almost went with the brando protectors, but price differnce was so great and I heard equally good stuff about the HORI ones.

No protectors, no scratches.

Though, I am in the process of ordering Brando protectors for both the DS and PSP. Rawk.

Ok going back to Gr7 science. Objects can only scratch another object if it is harder or sharp enough. The cheap plastic stylus is not hard or sharp enough to damage the screen. Essentially no amount of tapping will damage the screen. All you get is a sweat/body oil from fingertap touching. You have to wipe this off periodically.

The demo units I've seen at EB and Target or what-not don't have the same stylus that the DS comes with, so i think that may be why they're messed up.

No protectors, but a couple hairline scratches due to Wario Ware Touched. You can only notice them when the system's off, though.

mine is holding up excellent.

no screen protectors being used.

i'm using the stylus like mad on the mario 64 mini games, no scratches or anything.

it really is an amazing screen.

i also clean is using either vinegar on a paper towel or windex. no problems with either of those.

i love my ds. just picked up "metal slug advance" for it. 8 hours of work should go by pretty quick tonight. :lol

You just described my store.

I bought Pelican Screen protectors.. the bottom one didnt fit the screen but went on fine, the other one went on fine, fit perfectly and then began developing bubbles in it because there was no adhesive of any sort over the screen portion, just the edges. Responsiveness was ass on the touch screen.. I eventually had to use a sewing needle to pry the edges up very carefully... worst product I have ever purchased.

But the screen protectors were good?

I hated the Pelican screen protector. It made the screen just a little bit harder to see because it wasn't completely see through. The screen was also really, really hard to get off and it doesn't cover all of the screen. Just a little bit close to the edges is not covered which never really was a problem, just a little annoying. I got the nushield screen protector and it is really nice. It covers the whole screen and you can't really even tell its there, plus it gives good screen protection.

I found most of my scratches came from me using the thumb-nub whilst playing Mario 64 DS. I think a little bit of dust or something got caught underneath it as I was using it to move and that's what's caused the scratching.. :(

Yeah my g/f's has the Pelican protector on it, it seems to be holding up ok and there were no problems with fitting the top/bottom screens, the top one was a bit flimsy (and pointless.. I mean, you don't touch that one so how will it be scratched?) but the bottom one was painless to put on using that 'soft card' they provided..

Mine doesn't have any scratches. Just some fingerprints. I'll just get Nintendo to replace it if it gets scratched...

On a related note. How long do screen protectors last? Do they need to be replaced at some point?

The Brando ones, for example...
