Camera angles.

Is it just me, or do camera angles 'make' the game?

We're looking at all these next gen shots with dramatic camera angles and whatnot, thinkin "ohhhhhhhh SNAP", but when we're playing the games, it's like "yep. rear view camera. ive played this before"

God of War, i think, has done something about this. To an extent. The camera isn't always fixed at a certain point, or anything. It varies from situation to situation. Granted, most games' camera varies from situation to situation, but God of War never has that 'behind' view most 3rd person adventures have. It's always got something thematic or dramatic going on with it, and thats what really brings me into the story. It just doesen't reminds you everytime youre playing "hey, this is a 3rd person action adventure, k?"

Notice that no single shot stays on the camera for one angle longer than 3 seconds.

Perception dictates everything.
It is insanely vital.
Look how just changing around the camera system changes around an outdated control scheme like RE4. Felt new, but it was just a different view.
 
I think one thing that wasn't given much attention about God of War is that, at least to me, it has probably the most well made camera system in any 3d action game. And I'm not just talking about some of the cool context sensitive action sequences, but even in general gameplay, they've really found a way to fix nearly all of the problems with 90% of the camera systems in todays games.
 
Camera angles hardly "make" a game. However, they do add to the atmosphere and make the game more cinematic, which ultimately makes for a better experience.

In some cases, like with RE4, a change of the camera system turns into a complete change in gameplay dynamics. The camera and gameplay changing go hand-in-hand.
 
Camera's are very important. I fully believe that Ico wouldn't be anywhere near the game that it is if it used a standard 'over the shoulder' camera.

I couldn't disagree more. Bad camera angles will ruin even the best of games. The "real" trick to any camera is to make them transparent to the player. The player having to navigate any in-game camera on a continual basis is generelly perceived as a bad thing. The player should be playing the game, not the camera.

I said camera angles don't MAKE a game. They can certainly break them.
 
God of War's camera is certainly one of the best yet for that type of game. Ico's is excellent as well.

One thing I really like about the cameras in both of those games is that you can learn to trust it. If you can't see something, it's probably not important.
 
I think God Of War is a good example of a nice AUTOMATIC camera.

My favorite cameras are ones i can fully control though. Nothing can immerge me more than that. And i think cameras are generally good nowadays. They were rushing to do it in the 32/64 bitters era but the 3D was relatively young so i suppose it was normal they did suck.

Yeah, I'm still impressed by this game's camera.

Speaking of camera angles, the angles in the GTA series were changed quite a bit with GTA:SA. I found myself constantly adjusting the driving camera with the right analog stick to compensate for the slightly-too-high angles.
