Can GAF make a (small) game?

So I'm wondering if anyone wants a stab at making a proof of concept game. Don't need any skills just an aptitude or maybe you already code, do graphics etc. Let's not make out we're going to make dead cells or something and get over ambitious. I'm just talking about a small, maybe 3 level game or something worked on collaboratively. How hard is #learnToCode? No stupid timescales or patreon's, just attempt it to see if we can learn on the way and actually achieve it.

I'm interested. But,

I can't even make threads, let alone games.

Nope.

What constitutes small game?
Could be a fun exercise. Although maybe getting people with some experience into this sorta community challenge might not be the point?

If you want to do both code and assets in this effort, I'd argue that the asset part is probably the harder part. For UE4 there are plenty of basic tutorials available, heck, when you create a project you can select a template so that a default controllable character is already set up for you. Some collision detection and projectiles and the sort should be easy enough for a beginner.

So the idea is we get a few people. Then we have a consensus on whether to go small and use something like phaser, something like Unity or even UE. Then decide on 2D/3D. As Herr Edgy Herr Edgy says the asset part will be time consuming so if we just focus on getting the logic and placeholder assets before wasting time to see if we can do this.

As an example, I reckon just a 1/2 level proof of concept in a 2D mario like game, maybe a small arkanoid clone, or missile command. Even an HTML5 facebook game at this point. It's just to create something :) The power of many can heopfully brute force the creativity and skills. It won't be like a massive commitment, just for fun and wiht progress updates. I'll create a PM group in the first instance to start the ball roling

I know how to do some 2D things in Playmaker for Unity. I've made maybe 15 small games with it and have lots of unfinished games.
Can't code though and I'm horrible in drawing graphics. So I would probably be of no help.

Are people with dev experience wanted or is this supposed to be a "non-game dev GAF makes a game - how far will we come?" kinda thing?

I'm a UE4 dev, so simple mechanics would be a breeze. Although I wanted to get into 3D art, and as so happens to be the case, I just wrote my last exam this semester and now have 5 weeks off (aside from work which is 2 days per week, so plenty of time).

I'd be in if we did 3D and UE4. I could introduce the non-devs to UE4 as I also held an UE4 workshop for beginners in the past, or point them towards the right direction while still challenging myself because I'm doing 3D.

EDIT:
Here's a video to my yet most successful jam game which we did in 5 days with 5 people.

We took some free textures and a few couple pre-made materials/effects (mainly the water, fog and blood decals) but other than that everything is custom made.

Maybe take the story of a game that is known, copy the story and build your own game around it. (RPG Maker for example)

I've been writing RPG's in my head forever, sometimes i take long walks and work on a specific story that I thought at some point could become something decent....I had already conjured 3 games out of the story or at leas that was my idea

Nothing really great pretty generic fantasy/magic tropes and ideally I was thinking 2d art similar to SNES FF2/3

Willing to throw some time into some graphics 2d/3d assets if ya need, haven't done 3d in a while tho, my experience is mostly within background art for animation. Hit me up!

I wonder if a GAF game jam is something doable or if that's too far out of scope.

This is an excellent idea. Would be fun to see a game jam with gaf devs.

Would be cool to have a game development thread. I'm a indie dev noob and would like to have a place to ask questions and see what people are doing.
