Can I play death stranding 2 without playing the first one?

When I was deciding on the first game, I couldn't pull the trigger as much as I love Kojima. All the things I was reading were that for lack of a better term it was a "slog", meaning slow paced, and having to constantly manage load management etc, I just skipped it.

Think it's worth playing 2, and can i even play it without playing the first one?

It's a direct story continuation, at the minimum watch a youtube recap or two.

Wouldn't recommend playing the full game at this point cause you're gonna feel burnt out.

2 is going to be a lot like 1. If you didn't like what you were reading about 1 I doubt 2 is going to be a game changer. I would try the first game on PS+ or GP if it's still on there or not, not sure. If you don't have either those maybe wait for a discount on 1 so you don't lose to much if you don't like it.

I can't imagine taking the story here seriously. Still blows my mind that people actually hold that against MGSV like they really needed all the details about the Big Boss before the NES game.

Get it if you think the gameplay looks good.

I have the platinum for the first and I can barely tell you what was going on.

But if you skipped the first one for the pacing and things like equipment load management - that is still the game. I don't see how 2 would be something you want to play when 1 was so off putting you skipped it entirely. You're getting caught up in the hype my guy, happens to all of us.

That's good but a 5 minute recap video is probably not enough information for a roughly 20~ hour game, imo.
19 hours and 55 minutes was adjusting packages and walking on delivery routes so its probably good enough. Besides being a Kojima story, it's bonkers and random from the get go so just knowing the basics is probably alright.

What I want to know is whether or not the inventory shit is better. I hated balancing packages and the first in first out nature of loading vehicles. It was basically a simulator of using terrible excel sheets with macros written by someone who didn't care about the user. Not the type of shit I expected in a game.

I doubt you'd make sense of what Kojima call "a story" even if you played the first game. None of his games makes any sense.

If you're on a disc system I'd pick up a cheap copy of the DS1 Director's Cut, play well into the second area to see if it clicks with you; and if not, flog it and don't bother with the second. If you do like it, play through, finish up, take a breather, then jump into the second game after a little break.

Death Stranding is my game of the last gen, but I'm not overly concerned with the details of the story beyond the overall vibe and emotional beats. I'm more concerned with the gameplay and the world; and I'd think it'd be a shame to miss out on the first one and how it unfolds in that respect.

The story is more complicated than MGS or anything they have done in the past, so would recommend playing, but yeah, the burn out part can be very real, as the gameplay is very similar, unlike every MGS sequel.

OP, get the Director's Cut of the first game and play through it. The starting 2 chapters are the only slow ones. It picks up pace immediately after that, and worth the price.

Don't pick this up right away after completing the 1st and star playing it, because of fomo. It's not going anywhere. Take your time and play other games in the meanwhile.

Get it after Gamescom, or during The Game Awards, possibly even at a discount/sale, snd then play it, to avoid open world burn out.

This is me right now ☝️

I know I'm not gonna enjoy the gameplay of DS2, but I still want to play it so badly. I love Kojima weirdness, and the game looks awesome. But the first one was SO BORING.

I'm torn.

Nothing has changed, it's still pretty much the same game design. So if you didn't find the first one appealing, I doubt this one will appeal to you.

Having said that, I don't like gate keeping. I think you should try it, you might end up enjoying it. The story in the first game is confusing for the most part, but you can get the gist of things with a YT recap. The game also has a way of recapping things, while also giving you a databank full of definitions and lore as you stumble upon keywords.

I think the first one would've been better if it was actually more boring. It's when it gets into all the ridiculous long nonsense cutscenes and lame combat parts that it kinda sucks.

Will the sequel also have really tedious granular menu interface perusement and nonsensical item management? I disengaged after a few hours due to being tired of playing half the experience through its incessant menu tabs.

even if you beat the first one, the story is obscure and you still really have no idea whats going on

big boom or something made bad stuff happen; the living/dead worlds got mixed or something; beaches look like beaches but who knows and are some intermediary between the living/dead worlds; spicy dead boys floating around everywhere trying to pull you to the dead side; tactical-support-chest-baby helps with the spicy dead boys; when people die in the living world they make a big boom (unless promptly cremated); too many big booms so people live in little isolated villages/cities or whatever, far away from each other; us gov't or whatever it is wants to reconnect/reunite all these isolates villages/cities; family drama because youre the us president's adopted retarded son or something

great game

Don't miss DS1 directors cut. It is a very good game and beautiful which test your patience, and its very cerebral. Play it before or even after Ds2 to add more immersion to the lore of DS world.

I played the game and I still can't tell you what happened in the story, so might as well save some time and not understand it through a video.

I recall death strandings story being very super natural, future America aftermath of a nuke, and Norman Reedus delivering packages on his back.

The story is nonsense, I wouldn't overly worry about it.

As a game, 2 looks like more of 1, so I'm sure whatever concerns you had about the first game will still apply here.

I mean most people started Metal Gear at MGS1 which is the third game in the series lol (and the second one had a ton of story even tho it was 2D)

Gameplay wise I would 100% NOT recommend playing it one after the other as they are pretty much the same experience with few key differences. Story-wise you can watch a full recap.

Even after 70 hours on the first game, I never understood anything about the story, so I don't think it would matter much to be honest... :messenger_grinning_sweat:
I know people don't like when we say this, but I think that Kojima is pretty bad at story telling, you will sometimes get 2 hours of cutscene where you didn't really understand anything, which can actually be summed up more clearly in 2 minutes, so yeah...
Watching a recap / explanation about the first game would probably give you more clear information than actually playing the game.

Yea I'm kind of the same way. Also though I did hear Gene over at LSM mention some stuff you would need to know from the first game and it was all basic stuff that I knew about. He mentioned some other things though that I'm not sure about. Gene also said the story in this one is easier to follow.

Do whatever you want, but the original DS is amazing and what cements Kojima as a true legend. It's well worth playing.
