Yes, I played the first one but I forgot 100% what happened. I didn't know even while playing it lol.
There's also a nice, detailed codex for each character / events etc and the main points are explained well.

The recap they provided is sufficient enough to figure out wtf is going on. I just told a friend to do the same thing if he buys it. You wouldn't want to play through the first one for just the story because the intro to part 1 is like watching David Lynch film paint dry.

Death Stranding has some of the highest production values of any game ever made imo, but holy fuck is that story convoluted beyond all understanding.

I noticed that there was an option in the menu called "Death Stranding Recap." So I am guessing it will give you a run down of what happened.
