Can Microsoft redeem itself?

This thread is stupid for one reason.

The general gaming community (i.e. not us) doesn't give a shit about any of this. They will buy what has the games they want to play - period.

Exactly, which is why the Dreamcast comparisons are even stupider. 360 has a large range of games that casuals will actually want to play. None of this "winning" E3 shit matters outside of here. Just look at last year.

i personally believe 360 will be $300. Dont know about PS3, they are packing alot into it.

Im just happy SE are on board, and their support is not limited to FF11. Wada stated himself that they are working to build a future with MS, and to expect many new interesting games from SE.

My only worry is taht its going to be Online games only, id really like some solid RPGs, just so the xbox360 has a chance in japan

Don't worry, normal people still care about it.

haha - my thoughts exactly as i clicked the thread title.. and now im going to clog up this already busy thread by agreeing :p

noone in the general public gives a fuck about these glorified press conferences- i really believe that they'll have no impact on the public's perception of these machines, and it will rest squarely on the big 3's respective marketing departments..

It could easily do well at launch if the games get good reviews....

.... but with GTA at PS3 launch exclusive and FFXII still Sony's the average gamer will faithfully upgrade from PS2 to PS3.

Where the hell has it been confirmed that GTA will be a PS3 exclusive launch game? Seems like more Sony disinformation spreading to the masses to me...

The biggest issue for MS is going to be dealing with the PS3 coming out a LOT less than a year later. Only 3-5 months after X-Mas means that when people go into the store looking at 360, they will be faced with pre-order images of the PS3 and games, and coming soon signs.

MS needs to hang its hopes on Live, because that is their best asset. They lose in every other category to the PS3..

No, I don't.

I just think that people speculate too much thinking that a bad showing at a trade show is somehow going to damage said company. Had the roles been reversed and MS was the leader and Sony the underdog I would be saying the same thing.

E3 means a lot to the hardcore. Hardcore gamers aren't the majority of the market. That's a a fact.

So, basically, however E3 turns out for any company means diddly. What matters are the games. If Sony has the games and beats MS on that front after both have been released, MS loses.

DING, DING, DING- WINNNAARRR!

they needed more fmv of games coming out 2-5 years later.... to show what their system is capble of in the future....ala ps3

Now, that to me, is just dumb. Yeah, please - show me more FMV bullshit. No thanks.

If it can't be rendered in real time on real hardware - fuck it.

There's nothing to redeem... MS has a nice looking system, some great titles coming, a kickass online community, ok there's one thing and ONLY one thing they need to do to redeem themselves... delay PDZ to make sure it looks great... or explain why it look so... average when we saw it on MTV.

I wish that entire special was just a nightmare and didn't even exist. I hope we are totally wowed (by PD0) so we can never again speak of the travesty of that MTV special. I laughed my ass off when my uncle walked in the front door and said "Is that Halo?"

Madden at Christmas will redeem them. All my casual friends talk about is the footage they showed of Madden during that mtv thing.

that was a jest a ps3... and pretty much what sony did with thier presentation....

wasn't killzone supposed to be the halo killer? and in that little time killzone 2 is supposed to be good and look like this? I call BS or FMV you decide....

Did you say redemption? At this point Microsoft should be praying for Sony to royally fuck up their image showing bad looking in-game footage and screwing developers with the nastiest hardware problems.

And for those claiming that gaf rules are not applicable to the real world, I suggest you to look other websites' forums. Xbox fans all around the world are blasting Microsoft while PS3 is seen as the ultimate powerhorse, word of mouth will do its work soon.

Redeem itself from what?!

How can some of you not be impressed with PGR3,GR3,GOW,etc.?

If Madden makes launch and looks anywhere near that teaser, they won't have much trouble selling the system this Fall.

So the real world = other websites forums? :lol

Real world is NOT POSTING ON A VIDEOGAME FORUM

We're so far into Xbot damage control that it isn't even funny.

The expectation was that Sony wouldn't have anythign to show-- or at most, a demo or two of concept stuff. THey instead release full system specs, footage of a lot of games including a realtime U3 demo, and an earler release than anticpated.

For a group who've lauded graphical superiority for so long, it must be hard.

Sony fanboys, on the other hand, are showing their hypocrisy over the idea that graphics matter that much, after years of saying the opposite.

I agree with this.

As much as people would just love to see the X360 dead and buried, it aint happenin.

Sure they can.

Sony may have all the franchises but MS has some really solid developers working for the 360. It's all about the games and if MS's exclusives are good then back them with good marketing then they'll be set.

Thing is so far Sony hasn't stumbled and that's what any challenger needs to seriously hurt the incumbent.

It depends on what the games look like when the console launches and begins to compete with ps3. They have enough 3rd party support to be at least as sucessfull as the xbox. I think sony has stumbled with the design of the controller and the hardware not blowing xbox 360 away.

Excellent point, Sony is a tremendous competitor and doesn't take much for granted.

That is a great idea. Just borrow a PS3 from Sony and run them on it now! :)

Internet forums are playing a huge role in the gaming community, posting on a BB it is no more a nerdy thing. Plus, magazines will likely show Microsoft's conference as a disaster, while pimping Sony's at the same time.

And then get nullified once actual games running on real hardware is shown.
That's what MS should be hoping. I don't believe the gap is as wide as some people think (come on, tech demos vs first gen games?) but Sony is a marketing juggernaut and will play all their cards.

Agreed. Here's what I just posted in a seperate thread (about the Revolution travesty):

Sony and Microsoft talked the talk, then backed it up. Sony said they could do great graphics, then SHOWED US.

Microsoft said there would be great games wrapped into this amazing Live and Media Center functionality, and then they SHOWED IT.

The focus was different, but the content was there. I'm stunned by the functionality of the 360 at this stage in the game, and not JUST the games (which, with a few exceptions, look amazing), but the entire package. Live is awesome, and it's only gonna get better.

Yep, in a perfect world the perfect console would have xbox360's online system (spectator mode sounds fascinating), its controller and Sony's 3rd party support.

It's still a two console future as far as I can fathom.

Any console launching with the newest best version of Madden for Xmas will sell great in the US. There will be decent enough games to wow the casual gamers out there. As much as Xbox fumbled the ball for the hardcore gamers, the casuals will still come.

MS probably will double their marketshare this gen to 35%ish if not more, depending on how well they are able to deliver on the games.

PS3 will still obviously fare far better especially worldwide.

I think just about every video game forum and newsgroup since the SNES/Genesis days has been heavily skewed towards Japanese companies. A lot of younger people grew up at a time when video games and Japan were almost inseparable. Now add in the whole "Microsoft = Satan" thing, and many gamers won't even give MS a chance, it seems. Seriously, think about it: If video game forums were representitive of the real world, Nintendo would be a dominating juggernaut.
