Canada's new $10 Bill to feature a black woman who refused black segregation

The Bank will now begin to design this new $10 note featuring the portrait of Viola Desmond. Through consultation with subject matter experts, the reverse side of the note will depict symbols and images that represent the broader themes of social justice and the struggle for rights and freedoms.

To continue to celebrate more iconic Canadians, the next $5 note will also feature a new portrait subject and supporting imagery. In due course, the Bank will launch another consultation process to seek input from Canadians on the design of the next $5 note, building on the success of this most recent process.

This will be a few years in the making. The new $10 note is expected in late 2018, and the new $5 note will follow a few years after that, but soon enough two new notable Canadians will be celebrated on our currency. The subsequent notes (the $20, $50 and $100 notes) will follow every two to three years.

Macdonald and Laurier
As Viola Desmond will be featured on the $10 note, and another iconic Canadian will be featured on the future $5 note, Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, and our first francophone Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, will be honoured on our higher value bank notes. This will take place when the higher value notes are redesigned for the next series.

These changes mean that former prime ministers William Lyon Mackenzie King and Sir Robert Borden will no longer be portrayed on bank notes. The $20 denomination will continue to feature the reigning monarch.

This design approach affords the opportunity to showcase and celebrate more great Canadians, while maintaining our proud historic roots.

Pretty cool.

I still miss the bird series of bills that we had in the 80s/90s, but am not really attached to the individual people featured on the reverse sides.

Canadians so polite they just go ahead and tell us in the title who she is instead of setting us up for shaming about not knowing Canadian history.

Those really were, thematically, the best notes. The nice thing about using nature and landscapes is that it's almost entirely non-political.

Don't worry. Not many Canadians knew who she was either. But they will now.

As a white person personally I am tired of seeing old white guys on money, have some diversity, just because they weren't prime minister doesnt mean they didnt impact the country in a positive way.

I'm happy, and I actually picked and voted for her to be chosen during the campaign. I remember some GAFers trying to refute my choice of Desmond too.

Good job Canada!

Conservative commentators losing their minds in the comments sections, LOL

what makes this even sweeter is that they picked the $10 bill which has John A. MacDonald on it... gonna make Conservatives real salty hehehehe

IMO, when Queen Elizabeth II abdicates, I think they should dump the royal family off the $20 bill and make a change for someone else

MacDonald I think will take the $100 from Borden, while Laurier will take the $50 from Mackenzie King.

Also the hardcore Conservatives hate MacDonald, I recall Harper's CPC trying to demonize MacDonald's Conservatives as Liberals for stupid political points (for example calling the Chinese head tax a Liberal policy when trying to court the Chinese Canadian vote). But then again, MacDonald's party was officially called the Liberal Conservative Party of Canada after all.

It really shows that most of the CPC is just made up of Reform / Alliance folk more than Progressive Conservatives.

That's dope. I'm from Halifax (but grew up in BC) and had never heard of Viola Davis until the last few years.

I was also just complaining that Canada doesn't do much to acknowledge its Black history either. But that could be due to where I live; Victoria is fucking White as hell.

Canada didn't have many black people living here until recent decades. In 1971, the black population in Canada was 34k out of nearly 22 million.

We were important as an end point to the underground railroad in the 1800s, but we never had the large black communities that the United States had until immigration from the Caribbean picked up in the 70s.

If you are from southern Ontario (especially the Windsor and London areas), or from Nova Scotia, you may get more black history in the way of local history.

I like the Queen, but when she dies (she won't abdicate,) we should move on from the monarchy entirely. Nobody wants King Chuck as their figurehead.

True, but we still have Black History, especially out East. I'm always learning something new about Black history from back home in Nova Scotia for example. I work with kids, and I was pretty stoked that their Social Studies content mentioned Black slavery in Canada, and how Black American immigrants were turned away from settling in Alberta, 'cause that shit never came up when I was in class. Like I said, I hadn't even heard of Viola Davis myself until a couple years ago. There's also the Sir George Williams protests that happened in 1969 which I first learned about because there was a documentary made about it, and caught it during my local film festival.

I don't really care either way, but I don't think I have ever met a diehard Canadian monarchist who wasn't at least 50 years old. Most are more like 80 years old.

Cool I suppose, but the $10 bill has the first prime ministre on it... Why remove him? Would have been nice to see Roberta Bondar on there imo, but I guess you have to be dead to be on a bill?

I personally love the selection and believe the right choice was made especially given the racial issues that are front and centre across North America and really the entire Western World.

I like QEII, but after her, the monarchy gotta go.

But I willing mind Kate Middleton instead of Charles. Lol

It says in the link right there, MacDonald is going to a higher bill (likely the $100), and the new $5 will have someone else too since Laurier is also going to a higher bill (probably $50),

Mackenzie King and Borden are getting retired.

agreed, Queen Elizabeth II was important at signing off the repatriation of the Constitution in 1982, i have nothing but respect for her.

But I agree about Charles, LOL!!! no way man, Charles should not be on the $20 bill hehe

I'd like to add, absolutely randomly and probably out of place:

Is there a Simpsons gif/pic for this? :O

One more example of how Canada is so much better than us. Our social and cultural superiors, truly. (Yeah, I know we're doing this with Harriet Tubman, but not without a bunch of people bitching about it. Plus, our money still has a bottom-six president on it.)

Plz annex us, Canada. Plz.

Lol, you do realize Canada is still a monarchy even if not necessarily in practice. The Queen/King of England is still the head of Parliament and Commander-in-Chief for Canada. No way they can remove the royal family from monetary notes and coins just like that. Would require unpredecented constitutional and judicial change.

Ah ok. I was a bit salty that they didn't replace King or Borden over MacDonald lol. But all is good!

Now to get QE2 off the moneys.

Also, it would be cool to have more science on our bills like the $5 with the canadarm and DNA. That's so badass.

Big step up from a few years ago when a scientist on one of the new designs for one of the bills had to be changed because whiners complained that she looked "too Asian".

I may not be an expert on this, but I suppose the Governor General could fill the role of the Crown very easily. Structurally it would be no different.

Is the redesign only for a short time? I hope not.

Also, it should have been an aboriginal. Oh well. At least it's not another white guy.

Removing the Queen from the 20$ bill is not the same as abdicating the monarchy. I doubt it requires a Constitutional amendment.

Not an expert being the keyword here.

Yes, it would require major legal changes, but the GG performs the role of the Queen in her absence, which is basically all the time.

It wouldn't happen over night, but I don't see why the position of GG could not be promoted to full head of state. (Just don't rename it "President". That's so tacky.)

It's not, MacDonald and Laurier are going to replace Borden and Mackenzie King, the latter two are getting retired.

And Viola Desmond was picked during the voting campaign set up by the BoC.

I picked Desmond. :)
