Vanillaware?
Mate whats the last Vanillaware game that didnt do well?

Even Grand Knights near literally sold out, they basically sold every copy they printed and its a PSP game from 2011........The PSVita was like a month away.
Huh, what's the last Capcom CGD1 game that didn't do well?

I though simultaneous release saves games from failure /s
I was told that multiplatform games will always hit the sales target. Seems thats not always the case;).

If only they’d made this game exclusive to one platform, it might have made more money 🙄

Of course it didn't.

It launched direct to a rental service.

It was also a weird ass half tower defense game.

The money they got for putting it in GP was probably the saving grace for them, if this bombed at retail on PlayStation and Steam.

This isnt a Division 1 game.
Yes, it is. I know it looks like a CGD2 game due to how Japanesey it feels, but the director (Shuichi Kawata) previously worked on Resident Evil games and Jun Takeuchi (head of CGD1) was an executive producer on the title.

New IP being on Gamepass is proving again and again to be a great lifeline. They got marketing and guaranteed payment. You have that backwards. Exoprimal was also largely carried by Gamepass.

That "marketing" is exactly what Capcom is blaming for the game being a failure.

We already knew Exoprimal was a failure. They put out their contractually obligated 4 seasons and washed their hands. You couldn't even fill a match without bots on Steam long before that.

I played through all the seasons and never had trouble finding a match, only PC and Xbox players. And MS showcased the game at one of their big events, which millions of people saw. And they paid them money as well. Capcom has to agree to any marketing deals. They knew exactly what was planned.

The trailers looked beautiful and visually interesting, but it didn’t have a character that made me say “oh shit I want to play as that dude” or any gameplay footage that made me say “I can’t wait to try this for myself”. And it has a weird name.

It’s the kind of game reveal that puts it in the “not hyped, but ill check it out if it gets some positive buzz” category.

We don't even know how much it sold, but that's not the point. The real issue is that Xbox fans can't admit that Square Enix had unreasonable expectations and that going multiplatform rarely makes a significant difference for most games. Of course, sales improve when a game is multiplatform, but people are seriously overestimating the impact.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Doubt most people know it exists. Obviously GAFers do but that's not what drives sales.

Uh.....release it physically. I would have bought it.

Remedy said the same thing about low sales of Alan Wake 2....because they had no physical edition

And by 'physical' I don't mean fucking Limited Run Games bullshit!

Absolutely zero marketing, I'm more than sure that some people only learned about the existence of this game from this post. + For such a game, the price tag of $50 is too much, especially considering the fact that you yourself refused to advertise it. $35-39 and a small advertising budget and I think it would not have made a splash, of course, but it would have recouped the costs. Good, interesting and unusual game.

It's a cool tower defense game, but Capcom miscalculated its potential by spending so much into its graphics production value.

Can't have been that great if they're commenting on it not hitting sales targets.

Deserving considering they tried to get ookami fans to buy this game, when behind the pretty art lies a game with just okay gameplay, but also shallow story, shallow characters and shallow direction. i wouldnt pay more than 5 bucks for this.

Square Enix management took a look at the performance of their AAA franchises and concluded - after what I presume was detailed analysis - that their sales and franchises are being harmed by pursuing an exclusivity strategy.

The real issue is some fanboys of a certain console who are insistent that they know better the scope of the problem than Square Enix. To the extent that Square is being chided for having the unrealistic and unreasonable expectation of selling more than 4 million units of well made, well reviewed AAA games with stellar production values.

It doesn’t matter that most of the successful Japanese devs are pursuing multiplatform releases, eg Capcom, Konami, Atlus, From Software…

Don't put out a demo for anything niche like this. You get people in the door by making them think it's a new Onimusha. The failure point was the marketing strategy.

I wanted to like it, I really did, it's a Capcom game after all (one of the dev companies I like the most) but, I expected an action game bathed in Japanese folklore but what we got was a...tower defence game and I don't do tower defense games, just like I don't do MP survival ones, rogue lites/likes and isometric stuff...

I don't get it, Capcom is a treasure trove of beautiful IPs and they decided on something like...this ?

Give us a new Viewtiful Joe, a new Onimusha, a new breath of fire...something, I mean, shit, what about Pragmata which is a new IP (which is still stuck in development hell) ?

FML, I'm all for new IPs, thing is, releasing a tower defence game in 2024 at 50 Eurodollars ("free" on GP, I know)...I don't think that it's something that people asked for - especially from Capcom.

Wait so sqaure ignoring Xbox for 10 years " sqaure is stupid" sqaure finally going back to Xbox "sqaure knows better than gamers". Redcioulous!

It's fine that it's multiplatform going forward, but Xbox won't change a thing.

Btt. Like this multiplatform game proves it takes more than a good game and multiplatform releases to be successful.

A shame it didn't hit its target, because I like it when devs can experiment with smaller titles like this. I'm part of the problem though. It's been on my wish list from before release, but I just can't justify the price.

It's a cool game, but it's priced too high, IMO. I enjoyed the demo but I didn't buy it because of the price. Waiting for a sale.

Yeah, those extra 5k copies sold on Xbox, will really turn those financials around.

‘ Multiplatform’ means a day one release on PC, Switch 2 and Xbox.

The fact you guys fixate on Xbox clearly says a lot.

The fact you guys fixate on Xbox clearly shows your motivations are rooted in warz shit.

The reason for the focus is that it's the only platform which won't make any difference.

Pisses me off how stupid publishers can be, especially their "analysts" overestimating sales on everything just for a positive forecast...

And this game is genuinely awesome!

This is why going full digital only will be an issue for games going forward.

You market casual titles. You hope niche gamer titles like this are sold on word of mouth and gamers being informed. It was at a big gaming showcase and got reviews, demo and GP.

I haven't finished it, I found some of the levels are too long for the replayability required to unlock stuff. It's the kind of game I would have prefered to play in short bursts but it's pretty time consuming.

You’re…critical of Xbox in a thread about Kunitsu-Gami selling poorly?

Old Men Laughing GIF by ABC Network
What's worst, is you stalking every thread like the unhinged fanboy that you are.

Though, watching you bite on Xbox critical bait everyday is somewhat entertaining.

Carry on fighting, ohh and save some of those Bing rewards from Microsoft for me please.

Who said its selling poorly. If I expect a game to make me 1b in profit and it only makes me half a billion its still super successful but it didn't hit my targets. The same shit with other companies, but some of you don't understand that.

One of the cases that I absolutely believe that the demo hurt the sales of the game. They should have never made the demo the beginning levels of the game. For today's ADHD audiences with access to hundreds of games for free or cheap at any given time, you can't expect to hook people with that demo.

If they were set on a demo, it should have been staged in the mid game where you have enough combos/moves unlocked, and the tower defense aspect is more than just moving the 2 available NPCs to different choke points and forgetting about them. They did a disservice to their own game because in a bubble, that demo was unfun. Some people can have vision of how those modes and gameplay systems could expand in further into the game, but as a standalone "this is what the game is", it failed on all fronts.
