Capcom Classics Collection videos

To me, this is by far the best of the classic collections. Stuff like Legendary Wings (arcade version), 1943 (I won't have to pull out the Saturn to play it), Final Fight, Mercs, are all from my favorite era of arcade gaming. It good that Capcom actually got this right.

For 19.99, you can't go wrong

Gasp it has the original Street Fighters as well .......WOW BOUGHT

This looks like a very attractive package, especially since most of these games haven't been brought to a home video game system in arcade-quality form (in North America).

It has some of the verisons of Street Fighter II on it, but it's still missing the first Street Fighter. That's probably the most glaring omission. I thought it would fit well in Street Fighter Anniversary Collection (since we had versions of SF2 and SF3, it would sort of "complete the trilogy"), but since that didn't happen I was hoping that Capcom could at least put it in this package instead. No dice, unfortunately.

Buster Bros. would've been great to have on here, too, but I don't know if Capcom owns the rights to that game. Anyway, I've already got the PS1 Buster Bros. Collection, which was very well done--thank goodness for backward compatibility! :D

Capcom's got a page on their Web site with the full roster of games, which you can visit if you click here.

Did they go the emulation route? The audio is kind of scratchy, but Final Fight looks arcade perfect to me.

EDIT: I do care about this. When the GBA Final Fight was released I actually went through the trouble of comparing screenshots to verify it was an SNES port. It was :(

It's difficult to say for sure. It's possible some of the games are emulated, while others aren't. I noticed Street Fighter II and its variations have the high score a full row above the player 1 and player 2 scores. I recall that this occurs on some of the home versions, but not the arcade versions.

Digital Eclipse is listed as the developer, so I assume this is fully emulated. They were the folks behind MAT 1 and 2, along with several other emulation packs (like Master System emulation on the GBA for Phantasy Star in PS Collection).

Thanks for pointing that out. Until now, I never noticed that Digital Eclipse was the developer of this package. That means it's likely this will turn out really good!

For what it's worth, Digital Eclipse doing a retro game compilation doesn't automatically guarantee that all of the games would be emulated. In several instances, they've done translations when emulation wasn't feasible. Midway Arcade Treasures 2 and the upcoming Midway Arcade Treasures 3 come to mind as recent examples, where some games are emulated while others are translated. This was also true of older packages like the Genesis and SNES versions of Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits, where they did translations of those games to those systems because they weren't powerful enough to deliver quality emulations of the arcade games.

True, but it's worth noting that MAT2 and 3 emulation is being done by Digital Eclipse. THe ports/recoded games in those collections were done internally by Midway.

So the team DOES have GCN experience, why arent they putting it to use? Its not like classic complimations DONT work on the system.

My Hori Pad am Cry Sadwhateverthehellitis.

I wonder if there's an option for proper lo-res display, and a TATE option where applicable. No recent retro-pack did that bit right...

Wait, did someone suddenly yank the "coming the GC" label from this? Last I heard it was coming to the Xbox, PS2, -and- GameCube.

Edit: Any chance this is another one of those bizarre "late release" things? Where a multiplatform GC game is released a few months later? It just seems incredibly odd for the GameCube version to "vanish", especially with Digital Eclipse handling the code... their stuff is made to be ported easily. Development costs for the GC version would be fairly small, and these retro collections have generally sold well on the GC.

no one yanked the GC version cause there never was any, it was always something that IGN just assumed there would be

Isn't this just a compilation of all of the Capcom Generations discs?

Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to this and the MMX collection, assuming they do a decent job with X4 (re-encode the anime maybe, so it doesn't look like ass through s-video/component)

that would be awesome. i guess i shouldnt hold my breath though. ill cross my fingers instead.

I LOVE all these classic compilations. Granted I have them on MAME, but there is something about playing them LEGALLY on a big screen with friends.

Well, it's something IGN assumed after speaking with Capcom reps... just like MMXC for Xbox. I wouldn't be surprised to see both materialize a few months later (like MMAC Xbox did).

Yes, kind of. It does look like they used the Capcom Generation disks for some games, but they also added alot of games that didn't appear in the Capcom Generations. This is the perfect collection. The Only thing that could make it better would be putting Strider on the disk.

And Black Tiger, and Magic Sword, and...

Hey, gotta save some for Capcom Classic Collections 2...nobody knows milking like Capcom.
Actually, I think both of those are on some sort of blacklist Capcom keeps of games never to be rereleased. Black Tiger would have made it onto the CapGen packs if if wasn't. Varth, 19XX, and 1941 would also be on that list.

Black Tiger never even managed a console port - it must have bombed horribly in the arcade.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I've always wanted a home version of 19XX, never even was able to find it in an arcade.

While your logic is sensible, I DOUBT that Black Tiger sold less than Section Z. I mean, you can hardly find that game in an arcade.

They should also throw in Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 2, and Darkstalkers to that collection! Juuuuust to be sure that it sells as well as the first compilation. :D

I hope that Ghouls N Ghosts is arcade-exact. an exact port or emulation of the arcade.
because in Capcom Generation 2 for both Saturn and PS1, it was not arcade-exact. the ending music when you defeat Loki/Lucifer was changed, and was not in the soundtest at all. the resolution was slightly different, the color was pushed more toward the red hue, there was a frame or two of animation cut from when you powerup with golden armor and you dont see your feet move behind the grass on both halves of the first stage. minor things, but that prevented arcade-exactness from being done.

I just noticed something.

Remember what I said about the Street Fighter II games earlier? Well, go to Capcom's official page for Capcom Classics Collection, and look at the pictures. Closely examine the copyright screens. All of them have 1998 as the latest year in the copyright.

With that in mind, I wonder if the games in this package are in fact conversions or emulations of other home versions, rather than the original arcade games? Perhaps they are porting the PlayStation collections that were released in Japan (but not in the US) and compiling them into one large package.

By the video that what it looks like they are doing. I own, Capcom Generations 1,2 and 4, and the video look like those versions of the game. Also if they weren't taking the Capcom Generation code, why would they add Super Ghouls and Ghost to this Collection. That game wasn't a n arcade game only a home game.

Also when is this collection going to be released??

You're a smart guy. You should get a job at Capcom.

but the made-for-SNES Super Ghouls N Ghosts (never in arcades) was included in Capcom Generation 2 for PS1 and Saturn, so its natural that they'd include SGnG on CCC as well.

Why??
All the other games on the collections on the Capcom Classic Collection disk are Arcade games. Actually capcom using Super Ghouls and Ghosts tells me they are going to use the code from the Capcom Generations. The reason, Super Ghouls and Ghosts was put on Disk 2 of the Capcom Generations becuase each disk had 3 games with a theme. disk 1. a 1940 plane shooting theme, Disk 2 a ghouls and ghost theme, ect..so they had to add Super Ghouls and Ghosts to fill the disk and to go with the theme. Capcom Classic collection has no theme except alot of arcade games that rock, so why put a home game with a bunch of arcade games??

Also Capcom have used PS1 games in thier collection before. Everyone assumes it was Atomic Planet's choice to use the PS1 Mega Man Games in the Megaman Colleciton instead of emulating the nes games, but it may have been Capcom's idea. So Capcom may have told the programmers to use the games form the Capcom Generations on the Capcom Classic Collection. Plus Capcom of Japan are rereleasing the Capcom Generations on the PS2 in Japan.
