6.5 Presentation
The new backgrounds and theme songs are nice, but everything else about Capcom Fighting Evolution is a rehash. Granted these characters rock, but they're still in need of an update.
6.0 Graphics
Direct ports from the games in which they were spawned, the character sprites are pretty much caught in the mid to late '90s. The new special effects are cool, though.
6.0 Sound
Evolution's new soundtrack doesn't offer many memorable tunes, and the sound effects are the same ones Capcom's been using for years. Ditto for the voices.
7.5 Gameplay
Capcom put together some of the best fighting games of all time, and some of those mechanics still shine through here. Even so, the mish-mash of styles could have been handled better.
6.5 Lasting Appeal
Two-player mode is great fun, and this version had online play. Worth a look.
6.8 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)
As a two-player game, Capcom Fighting Evolution could prove to be a lot of hardcore fun for expert fighting fans looking to match up skills from various universes. It'll no doubt become an underground favorite among tournament players looking to fill gaps between Third Strike and New Age of Heroes matches, and should be great fun for the glitch and infinite fiends looking to exploit something new. For those looking for a true evolution of the fighting genre like the title implies, however, you're in for a severe disappointment; there's just not much to it that you haven't seen or experienced before.
Id love to see what Capcom could do with this concept if it had an ambitious development team and two years of development time behind it. Just imagine how cool it would be to play an all-new fighting title with completely remade character sprites, movesets, storylines, and gaming modes -- the prospects are truly mouth-watering. But until the powers that be decide that moving forward is the way to go rather than finding new ways to stand in place, it's a dream project we may never be lucky enough to see. The Xbox version offers online fighting, which is a great new addition, but that new feature doesn't make up for the disappointing gameplay.
